You can volunteer in community clean ups near you. We love seeing our own sisters and brothers participate in clean-up campaigns outside of Mkhuhlu. Here is one clean up day attended by our own Buntu Fanteso which took place at Kliepspruit River in Orlando East, Soweto. A partnership between , Department of Water and Sanitation South Africa, WESSA Schools Programme and Selelekela High School.

There are people volunteering to improve the living conditions of people in Mkhuhlu. We have to thank Rodney Mokoena and Trinity Nittie for their dedication in helping young people make it to university and their time the time they have given to community projects such as clean-up days. Let us all learn from this young lady and man and do our best to make our community beautiful in any way possible.

Illegal waste dumping and littering appears to be a great challenge in most areas of our country. It is small efforts like this made by young learners in a township outside of Grahamstown that give us hope. Everyone can play a role in making their community a better place in their own living space. An environmental awareness day hosted by WWF South Africa interns and South African Institute for Aquatic Biodiversity, Makhanda, Eastern Cape proved that it is possible to do a little in your community to make it a better place.

Ku kukula xitrati (sweeping the street with a straw broom) is our long lasting tradition. We continue to sweep the dust and leave the plastics outside our homes. A thought.

We caught up with young girls from Sybrand and Makhosana!
"We can see that we have a pollution problem. Its obviously not good for us or our the environment. So we think we should solve the problem as quickly as possible"
"We think its difficult to stop people from dumping outside because they don't have any other place to throw their rubbish"

Dear all, the Bushbuckridge municipality will have a meeting on Thursday (13th) to finalize plans for a clean up campaign in Mkhuhlu. We really want to show them that we are really serious about the illegal dumping e maF bridge site. Does anyone have any opinion around this issue? Do we want anything else to be addressed?

The tennis court issue will be our next problem to solve together.

OPPORTUNITY FOR GRADE 11 GIRLS
There is an amazing opportunity for grade 11 female science learners from schools adjacent to the Kruger National Park (Mkhuhlu, Hazyview, Cork, Belfast etc). Eight learners will be selected to go on a science and leadership camp led by Skukuza Science Leadership and the Nassani Trust. Application forms were sent to various high schools in Mkhuhlu for this programme and if you are interested and aren’t able to receive the form please send an email/inbox/whatsapp (see the number below). You need permission from your school to participate if your school has not been contacted.
It will take place in the Kruger National Park (Skukuza) from the 17th June- 3rd of July 2019. You will spend 2 and a half weeks in Skukuza, travelling to Makuya Park, Hazyview, and there will be game drives in the park, and some cool tourist destinations to attend modules, site visits and learning. This is exciting and fun! Your accommodation and food is covered, so do not worry about it all.
This is a once in a lifetime opportunity and we encourage you to grab it with both hands.
Basisani Mkhuhlu is a campaign aimed at making ourselves environmentally engaged citizens. We are very glad to be part of this initiative too which will see 8 girls from our community receiving experimental and science based leadership learning of a life time. This means more leaders in our communities!
