Looking for a wild adventure just outside of Cape Town? We got up close and personal with some of Africa’s most iconic animals at the Giraffe House in Stellenbosch — including their star attraction, Gerry the Giraffe! 🦒

The Giraffe House Wildlife Awareness Centre is home to a variety of animals, from reptiles and birds to smaller mammals, but it’s the giraffe and owl encounter that was most special to us. 🤗 Visitors have the unique opportunity to meet Gerry, a majestic giraffe who towers above the rest of the animals at an impressive 5.8 meters tall. What makes this experience extra special? You can hand-feed Gerry yourself! Our kids loved this interactive moment, and it’s a fantastic way to learn about giraffes‘ gentle nature, their long purple tongues, and their important role in the African ecosystem. 🌍

But the fun doesn’t stop there. The Giraffe House offers several wildlife encounters and education sessions throughout the day, where experienced guides introduce guests to other fascinating animals like snakes, lizards, and owls. These sessions are designed to be both entertaining and educational, making them perfect for kids of all ages.

What You’ll Love About the Giraffe House:

- Meet and Feed a Giraffe: Few places offer the chance to get so close to these gentle giants.
- Educational Wildlife Talks: Learn about conservation and animal behavior from knowledgeable guides.
- Kid-Friendly Facilities: The Giraffe House is designed with families in mind, featuring picnic areas, shaded spots, and even a play area for little ones to burn off some energy.

Things Good to Know:
⏰ Opening Hours: Monday to Sunday, from 9am to 5pm.
🎟️ Entrance Fee: Adults pay R90, children between 2 and 15 years old pay R60, and kids under 2 enter for free.
🦒Giraffe Encounter: Connect with the tallest land mammal in the world and get a behind-the-scene experience. It’s R750 for adults and R600 for children aged 5 to 17 years.

Whether you’re a local or a visitor, it’s an unforgettable experience that brings you closer to nature in a fun, engaging way.🦒

Mini Volcano Experiment 🌋

What you need:
- Transparent PET bottle
- Scissors
- Water, oil
- Watercolor, brush
- Effervescent tablet

Instructions:
1. Cut off the top part of the PET bottle.
2. Fill the bottom part with about a quarter of water and color it using paint and a brush.
3. Add double the amount of oil and wait until the two liquids separate.
4. Drop an effervescent tablet into the bottle.

What will happen? 🧪
Bubbles will form in the water, rise to the oil layer, and then sink back down. 🫧

Why does this happen? ✨
The effervescent tablet releases carbon dioxide. The bubbling gas rises to the top, just like in sparkling mineral water.

Aha! (Fun Fact) 💡
Carbon dioxide is dissolved in water as carbonic acid. This gas is added to many soft drinks to make them fizzy. Carbon dioxide is also a natural part of the air and can be found in mineral springs as well as in water bodies near extinct volcanoes. 🌋

The new year has arrived and so have our weekend ideas! 💡 Don't break traditions, so we keep sending family-friendly venues and activities your way in 2025!

Friday: How about going on a fun hike on the last Friday of the school holidays? Our two little climbers loved the Chapman's Peak hike and the views are just spectacular. It took about 2 hours to master the 5.85km with their tiny feet. This is one of the most rewarding hikes in the Cape Peninsula with outstanding views, beautiful fynbos and 360 degree views.

Saturday: Have a relaxing breakfast or lunch amidst the cutest farm animals at The Stable Shop in the heart of The Riding Centre, Hout Bay. You'll meet Henry the sheep, friendly dogs, pigs and of course horses. Pony rides are available for children between 2 to 10 years old and cost R80 per child. On Saturday, kids can ride a pony from 09:30 to 10:45 and again from 14:30 – 15:45.

Looking for a little more action? Make your way to Stellenbosch for some Xtreme Outdoor Karting. You can spend a full day at their facilities, braai with family and friends and have massive go-karting fun. The kids track requires a minimum height of 1.30m or the children have to be at least 9 years old. You can either race for 8 minutes, 14 minutes or 20 minutes. Prices start at R230.

Sunday: Have a light lunch at the beautiful Postcard Cafe in Stellenbosch and admire the breathtaking views at the Estate. Although there is NO play area, our kids loved to watch the fish in the pond, run around the lush lawns and explore the nature. Not far from there starts a short hike to a waterfall in case you're feeling super active.

You could also visit the newly refurbished Saddles Steak Ranch, Bottelary. The Steak Ranch got a brand new look and an upgraded play area including a jumping castle and generous soft jungle gym. The kiddies waffles are a hit and the new layout much more inviting and modern.

La Pineta Restaurant at Forest 44 is a green oasis in Stellenbosch that is a must-visit for families! 🌳

When you step out onto the open terrace behind the main restaurant, you’ll find pine trees reaching into the sky and an absolutely amazing play area for the children. With Table Mountain in the backdrop, this is a beautiful family restaurant with a lot on offer. ⛰️

While you can sit down and relax with a glass of wine and browse through their menu, the children can go off by themselves to explore the huge play area situated on a wide open lawn. They will find everything from a jungle gym, swings and slides, a sandpit, climbing wall and lots of space to play games and run around. The size of the play area is truly enormous and rarely found in other restaurants. 🛝

The restaurant is open 7 days a week and offers breakfast from 09:00 – 11:00 as well as an a la carte menu until 22:00. Of course, they also offer a special kiddies menu to cater for the little taste buds. 🍝

We’ve visited plenty of family-friendly restaurants, but Col'Caccio Durbanville? It’s on another level!

🎉 From the moment we arrived, the kids were in heaven, and we ended up spending an incredible 3 hours there because… they simply didn’t want to leave! 😅

Here’s what makes this spot unforgettable:
🍕 Hands-On Fun: Kids get a pizza box with dough, tools, and crayons. They can create their own cookie shapes and even make their own pizza (yes, they become little chefs if the kitchen is not too busy 🍅🧀)!

🛝 Epic Play Area: Slides, climbing features, a LEGO wall, giant Jenga, and more! Plus, a super friendly child-minder to keep the fun going.

🎲 Unique Card Game: They handed us a Col’Cacchio card game similar to UNO—our kids’ favourite! Perfect for some at-the-table entertainment.

While the kids had a blast, we relaxed with a glass of wine (they even have a special Durbanville range 🍷) and enjoyed every bite of their delicious food.
🌟 Our faves: Klaus’s go-to pizza, my Caesar salad, and Joscha’s vegetarian pick. And of course, Anni made her very own pizza masterpiece from start to finish! 👩‍🍳🍕

As a special surprise, the kids receive their baked pizza dough shapes covered in salted caramel sauce as a special dessert. So make sure the little ones leave some space in their bellies for this lovely sweet treat.

It’s so worth the drive to Durbanville! The staff? Amazing. The vibe? Top-notch. The memories? Priceless. 💛

⏰ Open:
Tues-Sat: 11am–10pm

We’ve attended the cutest art and craft workshop by Artelier By Anum in Newlands during the holidays and the kids were super excited to create and paint their very own bear during the Bear Painting Session. 🧸

It was all about mixing together the vibrant colours, using their fine motor skills, learning new techniques and having lots of fun during the creative process 🎨 It was amazing to getting to see all the different creations from the kids of all ages and they all had so much fun in creating their own master piece! 💙💜💛

The Bear Painting Workshop was R550 per child and included a 2 hour painting session, all painting material and gear as well as a kiddies meal and drink!

Afterwards, the kids could take home their painted bears in a handy carrier box and the excitement was real 📦☀️

What we loved:
- The workshop was held at the Shift Nespresso Bar in Newlands. So the parents could hang out at the cafe and enjoy a coffee or meal while the kiddies were busy painting their bears. ☕️
- The workshop facilitators were super friendly and helpful and assisted the children where necessary. ❤️
- It was a very professional set-up: from the aprons, to the gloves and materials to the take-home boxes and bears. 🐻
- The kids enjoyed their meals and the refreshment came in very handy after all the hard work. 🍔

offers a great variety of different workshops for kids and adults of all ages. Besides the bear painting, you can also sign up for pencil bag painting workshops, hair clip decorating, tote bag painting and more! Check them out on Instagram to find all upcoming workshops!
