A quick trip to and from Johannesburg in between unpacking and numerous loads of laundry, I am pleased to announce a new member to the family. After having lost 3 dogs this year, Harvey Spencer arrived yesterday with thanks to Cemair’s pet in cabin policy.

We arrived nice and early in Split and were able to walk off the gangway and straight into the Old Town, no need for tenders, taxis or terminals.

And as we later realized, it’s always good to be an early worm when it comes to sightseeing because by 10am it is chaos.

The town of Split is also Game of Thrones territory, where some of the scenes from the series was filmed.

Tomorrow is a long day of traveling - we arrive in the Port town of Ravenala, and transfer by coach to Venice. A quick hop to Dubai for 24 hours for some retail therapy….wish me luck 🤞

Early start this morning in Kotor Montenegro, having to collect tickets for the tenders at 6am 🕕, a quick breakfast and then off the ship and onto a boat.

We decided to brave the 1350 steps up the Old City Walls to St. John's Fortress, also known as San Giovanni by locals.Being just after 8am we almost had the Old Town to ourself.

Took a short canoe ride in the harbour to get a different view and perspective of the Town.

Of course there was liquid reward afterwards before returning to the cool air conditioning of the ship.

Navagio beach is the site of a famed 1980’s shipwreck resting in a sandy cove framed by cliffs.

There are many theories about how the Panayiotis ended up in this cove but they all agree that the vessel was smuggling contraband ci******es, booze and women.
It is now closed to the public for obvious reasons.

Waters around Navagio often have electric light blue colour because of the numerous sulphurous caves around the beach- fortunately you couldn’t smell the sulphur here.

Zakynthos (also called “Zante”) is the third-largest Ionian Island, with mountain villages, monasteries, sandy beaches and beautiful views at every corner.
Mada - our other resident travel agent and colleague booked us an exclusive speed boat excursion to see the Blue Caves and Navagio Beach aka Shipwreck Beach.

The Blue Caves of Zakynthos consist of geologic formations along the North-West coast of the island.
Their name is due to the particular reflections of the water in the caves and in some cases sulphur!
Beyond spectacular- brilliantly crystal clear waters, impossible to capture.

Embarkation day - what an incredibly smooth process to get onboard, probably 15 minutes from handing over bags to getting on board.
Sails up at 7pm but until then it’ll be some Starbucks and cocktails.

Afternoon siestas really are a thing- so whats the saying, when in Rome Greece…
Fortunately I bought a 5 day unlimited metro card which means for €12 the city is literally my oyster and the fact that all the stations have English names makes things really easy.

I ventured back to the Acropolis area to explore the Plaka - the oldest section of Athens with typical touristy restaurants and shops and had some sustenance in the form of some Loukoumades - basically Greek donuts drenched in honey and sprinkled with cinnamon. perfect to keep the energy levels up, especially since they only come in batches of 8!

Next stop was Anafiotika - a neighborhood built in the 1830’s with small blue and white homes and a maze of tiny passageways.

After getting lost in the maze of cobbled streets, I stumbled upon the Metropolitan Cathedral of Athens.

It took 20 years to build this Cathedral, with marble from 72 demolished churches. And contains the tombs of two saints, one being Saint Philothei. She was honoured for ransoming Greek women enslaved in Ottoman Empire’s harems and martyred in 1589.

A spot not to miss is the quirky Little KooΚ especially at night when everything lights up, and keep some room for one of their decadent desserts

Not sure if it was Day 0 or Day 1, but after navigating our way into the city via the metro and then a metro change we arrived in Athens. Then in the heat of the afternoon we managed to negotiate the map and find our apartment. Along the way some very friendly restaurant owners came rushing out with glasses of water and ice 🧊 - clearly we looked bedraggled.
We found our apartment and immediately turned in all 3 air conditioning units
After settling in and a quick shower we then decided to pop out and do some exploring firstly in our hood and then in to the Acropolis.
By the time we got to the Acropolis it was already 7pm and still hot as hades. It did however seem like we had arrived at the perfect time, no queues and very few people, plus the threat that they possibly were going to be closed on Saturday because of the heat.
So we carpe diem’d and started the walk up.
By the time we reached the summit, soaked in sweat we were met with a beautiful dipping sun and countless numbers of fellow tourists.

Next stop…..Athens! 🇬🇷

A whirlwind stop in Paris today. We were whisked off to i’l Maestro in Écouen for lunch which was followed by a walk around the Ecouen Castle and gardens. There was a quick pitstop at the hotel to freshen up before Dinner Cruise on Seine River. We spent the rest of Saturday evening taking in the hustle and bustle of Paris on a Saturday night. Best of, I got to celebrate my birthday in style. Thank you KLM Royal Dutch Airlines, Air France, Roissy Tourisme
