I don’t always cook when I’m hiking, but when I do you know it’s going to be special.

I’m normally a fan of lightweight, fast, nutritious meals from ountrycuisineza (the best freeze dried meals in SA) but with a hike to Groot Winterhoek that’s a bit easier than our usual multi day trips I felt that some ‘gourmet’ cooking was in order.

Thanks to , I could cook and still be as light as possible!

Breakfast was a cinnamon bagel from toasted in the titanium frying pan topped with cream cheese and jam, with freshly brewed using the french press (which fits perfectly in the Toaks 650ml and 750ml titanium pots)

Lunch by the pool was a meze platter of biltong, hummus, crackers and crudités, served in the Toaks titanium plate.

Dinner was sirloin steak cooked medium rare in the Toaks titanium frying pan, served with a Moroccan spiced cous cous, olives, and a village style salad, accompanied by a nice red wine

Tips for cooking with titanium:

Season the pan like you would cast iron with a high temp oil, I used coconut oil.

Use plenty of oil when cooking.

Go for a medium heat and try to distribute the heat as evenly as you can (I used a stove with a wider burner than my usual Pocket Rocket).

The results, delicious.

Phew, Monday AM and I have post adventure blues!

We had such an amazing weekend in Groot Winterhoek.

I’m not sure that, as a mountain guide, there is a better way to celebrate the end of a year and the beginning of a new year, than to spend it in the mountains with a great group of people.

We hiked, we absorbed the views, we snoozed in the shade and swam in crystal waters, we ate good food and slept under the stars.

Another fun weekend group hike!

This was the highly anticipated overnight on Table Mountain at the Overseers cottage.

The weather wasn’t ideal but with an awesome hike up through Orange Kloof, some extra adventuring to some hidden gems on the top, and a great group of both new and regular Wild Cape Hikers, an adventure was still had.

Table Mountain, a day of adventuring.

Hiking through indigenous afromontain jungle, discovering ancient archeological sites and mysterious modern buildings in the forest, edging out onto a rock ledge suspended above huge gorge, drinking water in caves filtered by fynbos, watching odd beasts from another land scaling sheer cliffs, climbing ladders put in place by previous explorers and finally summiting the mountain!

Not a bad day of adventuring if you are 8 years old (and hiking with your friends and family).

Second Micro Adventure in a week for : Cape Point overnight hike

This stunning 34km adventure is SUCH a great hike. With diverse terrain and views, from soaring coastal cliffs and deserted beaches, to fynbos filled trails and mazes of boulders, and an overnight stop with epic views, a hot shower and a Braai spot. All a stones throw from Cape Town, what more could you ask for!

Join us for an epic adventure to explore the mysterious DuiwelsKloof hidden deep within the Drakenstein mountains in the Banhoek conservancy.

Hike below the towering Devil’s Tooth with sheer cliffs that lay on either side of you, while meandering through beautiful forest following a tranquil cascading stream to an epic lunch spot near a waterfall.

Bring your cozzies for a mountain dip also!

This hike is approx. 16kms with 1000m of ascent and descent. I would classify this as a difficult hike.

The Springfield Convent Kogelberg Camp for 2024 is complete!

Nearly 100 students, 120kms, 5 groups, 4 days and 3 guides.

A huge thanks to and Ms Ballantyne for choosing us to guide their grade 10’s through the mountains for a second year in a row.

Thanks to .za and for sharing the guiding duties, stoked to be working with such professional and passionate people.

Already looking forward to meeting next year’s camp.

Join us this weekend for a guided outing with Stu in the Helderberg Nature Reserve as we lead you through a bouquet of trails, including the most favoured of all the trails, the recently established Waboom Trail.

Enroute we will take in the sweeping views of the Hottentots Holland mountain range, the Helderberg basin and a panoramic view of False Bay all the while contouring the slopes of the beautiful West Peak.

This hike is approx. +-15kms with 900m of ascent. I would classify this as a strenuous hike with some exposure.

The price for this hike is R600 per person including permits, and a qualified and registered Mountain guide.

Due to demand, we have added a second date for this epic summer adventure!

We will hike deep into the Groot Winterhoek wilderness reserve spending a day exploring the epic rock pool known as Die Hel. For this two night adventure, we will be staying in the best hut in the reserve!

3️⃣ days of great moderate hiking trails!

2️⃣ nights in the best hut in the reserve with bunk beds, toilet and cold water shower in the hut!

1️⃣ of the biggest natural rock pools in the Cape!

The total distance hiked will be around 34kms over three days, and you don’t have to carry tents or mattresses, making this a great introduction to multi-day hiking.

31st January to 2nd Fenruary.
R2750 per person

What to pack? That’s always a question I get asked. Finding a balance between comfort and weight is tricky and a personal thing. It’s taken me a few years of experimentation, but I’m happy with the balance I have found. So what am I packing for the Cederberg Grand Traverse? With no clients and the need to move fairly fast I will be going lighter than usual - less first aid gear, clothes and food. With the Cederberg closed to hikers due to high temps and and a high fire risk, we had to make another plan for our private hike this weekend. So we switched destination to the incredible Groot Winterhoek reserve and a trip to Die Hel. Ironically, it turned out to be hotter that the Cederberg…. Temps even hit 51’C as we drove up the Dasklip pas but at least I could reassure the group that we would be spending a lot of time ether hiking by a river or swimming in rock pools. We still had some crazy heat, but also enjoyed epic thunder and lightning, beautiful skies, good food and of course the most perfect rock pools. The group were great and it was fantastic introducing some cool people to this stunning area of the Western Cape.
