The Cederberg Grand Traverse, day 4

🥾 13kms and 988m of ascent.
⛰️ Tafelberg 1969m ✅

Weather was on our minds this morning, but we decided to make the call on whether we could continue once we had tagged our next peak. Tafelberg is of my favourite peaks - fast, steep, fun scrambling and epic views over the Cederberg.

Despite the blue skies and zero wind, the weather forecast indicated a heavy storm and potentially dangerous conditions for our next leg, the highest peak in the Cederberg - Sneeuberg.

We didn’t fancy waiting 2+ days with no winter gear in zero visibility, heavy rain and 3’c temps, to see if we could then tag the peak, so we reluctantly made the call to finished at Welbedacht 🏁

We had hiked 80.80km and 3967m of ascent in four days 📈

All of us were feeling strong, healthy and ready to hit the southern Cederberg.

Attempt 2 is coming, early 2025, so watch this space.

Thanks to .za and the LegendGV (genuine hipster so no Insta) for being an awesome team.

Thanks to and - for making life lighter, faster and easier!

Thanks to and for access, logistics and for taking care of these mountains.

The Cederberg Grand Traverse, day 3

🥾 23kms and 1100m of ascent.
🏔️ Sneeukop 1930m ✅

Today was supposed to be the biggest day of the challenge, but we had pushed hard the first 2 days so managed to tag Sneeukop before midday 😏

We kept pushing and got to our next camp by 6pm, we were now nicely ahead of our plan.

We had been checking the weather forecasts, and despite the blue skies and warm weather, we couldn’t ignore the looming storm. We realised that the forecast may cause us some problems. It was time to start making some hard choices ⛈️

The Cederberg Grand Traverse, day 2

🥾 20kms and 626m of ascent.

We woke early to a stunning sunrise and another hot day, but at least we knew it would be an easier hike having tagged Groot Krakadouw the night before. We packed up and headed to Boonjieskloof to cool off in the river. That afternoon, feeling strong, we pushed on to our second camp spot, nicely ahead of schedule.

The Cederberg Grand Traverse, day 1

🥾 26kms and 1400m of ascent.
⛰️ Groot Krakadouw 1744m ✅

Our journey kicked off at the Kliphuis campsite, and after a river crossing, we got our heads down and headed to Heuningvlei

With temps hitting 30°C, we took a break under some Ceders, we had made good time so decided to tag our first peak, Groot Krakadouw and get to our camp spot before it got too dark.

We were off to a great start 💪

Last week I had the pleasure of spending 5 days guiding a great group of students from on their inaugural Cederberg Challenge for .is.capetown

It was a treat to be the one to introduce them to the joys of multi-day hiking and share so many amazing parts of the with them.

I was also lucky enough to spend the time with Liz from a great trail partner and guide 💚

I’m now quickly packing and prepping to head back there on Tuesday to begin our next adventure…. The Cederberg Grand Traverse ⛰️🏔️⛰️🏔️⛰️🏔️

Join me on an epic adventure next year in Turkey, hiking some of Europe’s finest coastal trails on the Lycian way!

We will hike a little over 100km over 6 days, from traditional village to village, enjoying panoramic views of dramatic coastline, and visiting ancient Greek and Roman sites along the way.

This trip will be fully guided by an amazing qualified local guide and friend that specialises in the region.

We will be hiking ‘slack pack’ style where our luggage will be transferred each day to our accommodation, and we will hike with our day packs only.

We will stay in carefully chosen pension’s and hotels, and our meals will be regional Turkish fare. The tour will be an ‘Almost all inclusive’ package.

The adventure starts on the 15th of April 2025, but we only have a couple of spots left, so if you’re keen to join, get in contact with me to find out more info.

Ok, so a lot of folks have been asking about the Cederberg Grand Traverse. So here is all the info!

The route is flexible and up to those attempting the challenge, but you must:

Start at the northern edge of the Cederberg at the Kliphuis campsite.

And

Finish at the southern edge by Gideonskop above 🏁

There are 6 peaks to tag:
1 Groot Krakadouw ⛰️
2 Sneeukop 🏔️
3 Tafelberg ⛰️
4 Sneeuberg🏔️
5 Luna (or Apollo) ⛰️
6 Gideonskop ⛰️

The route should be completed in a single push.
The group must be self supported.
The target is to complete the route within 10 days.

I’m attempting this with my usual crew of mountain goats: .za and the too hipster for Insta, GV. ⛰️💪

Our route should work out to between 140 and 150kms with 6500m of ascent but a chunk of it will be off trail so we shall see what it really comes in at.

To my knowledge there has only been one group that have completed the route with these parameters and that was back in 2019 (although I’m sure many people have hiked something similar). They completed the route in 9 days.

So, less than two weeks to go time. We start hiking on the 23rd. Wish us luck.

Thanks to:
and for the logistics and access!

for the extra light gear
for the fuel

Photos are from our last stupid idea to bag 21 of the highest peaks in the Cederberg in 10 days 🤣🫣

We went waterfall chasing yesterday.

Some last minute training for our upcoming Cederberg Grand Traverse - loaded packs and some good distance and elevation.

This is such a stunning Kloof, indigenous shady forest, delicious rock pools, and epic views.

I’m looking forward to taking a group of you there in December!

For more details join our WhatsApp broadcast group….. yup link is in the bio.

On our recent hike to the the group were keen to get involved with giving back to this amazing area that we spend so much time in.

So we organised with for us to go plant some seedlings of the endangered Clanwilliam Ceder that the area is named after.

It always feels special to be a part of this initiative. Planting trees in the Cederberg and hoping for a future when we will be able to walk amongst the forests.

Please give a follow, support them with donations, share their info and if you are visiting the Cederberg, get involved and help with planting
