Young lions are a delight to watch at play -- their playful antics which include chasing, tackling and tripping prepare them for the very serious life skills of being a lion. On our photo trips we always suggest waking up extra early -- even at 4.30 am in summer -- to be able to find lions at dawn when they are most active . Thanks to our guide More for getting us in the right time at the right place for these shots which were taken on a private photo trip with great friends who travelled together to Somalisa Expeditions in Hwange in October 2024.

A few weeks old elephant calf fits snugly beneath its mother belly. They stay close to their mothers for at least two years. They drink with their mouths and it takes them about a year to get control of their trunks. Elephants occur widely throughout Southern Africa and elephant lovers should plan their trips for the dry season (May to November) when they congregate around water holes and rivers. Once the rains fall in late October to November the herds are able disperse into the woodlands for more favourable feeding.

Oh, the places you'll eat! A remote breakfast under the trees in the middle of nowhere or a dinner surrounded by lanterns. Sundowners on a river bank, or a gin bar in the river - such magical surprises. 🌿🥤📸

A place where waterfalls tumble in to the sea, GweGwe Beach Lodge in the Mkambati Nature Reserve, South Africa, has become one of our favourite spots along the South African coastline.
A unique environment where you can experience wildlife on land whilst watching dolphins and Wales frolic in the waves out your window. Situated along a stretch of coastline that is as untamed as it is beautiful.

A special moment in South Luangwa National Park as a pair of thornicroft giraffe are dwarfed by a boabab in the late hours of the day. These special giraffe are a subspecies endemic to Zambia and are characterised by the fact that they do not have a patterned hide below their knees. They are also slightly smaller than other giraffe species in Africa and with only around 550 individuals they are threatened in all areas they occur but are frequently seen in South Luangwa National Park.

Capturing an intimate moment between a male lion and his cub. When one or two new male lions defeat and exile the previous males of a pride, the dominant male will often kill any existing young cubs fathered by the losers. This is said to accelerate the onset of estrus in the pride's females. As many as 80% of lion cubs die before they reach the age of two, a sad reality of life in bush.

Get on the water in Botswana...

At Kwando Splash, the boat ride up the channel is an experience not to be missed. We were lucky enough to see purple gallinules, myriad kingfishers, painted reed frogs and water lilies everywhere! At sunset we navigated past the last pod of hippos to be met by a special sundowner and Okavango Gin!

There is no doubt that Maasai and Samburu people love dressing up, their clothing and bead work is phenomenal and unique to these tribes. Interestingly the patterned Shuka cloth worn by Maasai were not actually traditional garments. In fact prior to colonisation these nomadic people would most likely have worn leather from animals. There is a suggestion that Maasai cloth was brought to Africa by missionaries during the colonial era. Interacting with these tribes in East Africa will be a highlight of your safari.

We are excited about Great Plains new Mara Toto camp in the private concession of Mara Plains. Right along the river’s edge and tucked into the canopy of some of the most spectacular ebony trees, Mara Toto Tree Camp can accommodate a maximum of 8 adult guests. Wildlife here is, of course, spectacular, with access to the Maasai Mara Reserve and the more private 28,000-hectare Mara North Conservancy. It is never quiet around Mara Toto Tree Camp. Where in the world can you stand on the border of 4 countries, catch one of the worlds most prized game fish, see hundreds of elephants and are less than an hour away from one of the natural wonders of the world?

The Chobe River ticks all these boxes with river tours that allow you to catch the illusive tiger fish, see animals on the banks of the river, have sundowners cruises to the sounds of hippos and lions and pop over the border to Zambia or Zimbabwe to see the incredible Victoria Falls.

There is no bad time to be on safari. Dramatic clouds, green vegetation and healthy and relaxed animals often make the off season summer months a really great option for travel especially for photographers wanting to capture the drama. Plus you get to enjoy the wilderness with fewer people and at lower rates. Thunderstorm weather is generally short lived and can create the most amazing photographs.

Just back from Zimbabwe. There’s high drama in Mana Pools as elephants crowd the shrinking pools and forage for food in one of the driest seasons in years. Remarkable elephant bulls like Boswell and Fred are well adapted to these circumstances by standing on their hind legs and snapping high branches off the camel thorn trees. For mothering cows, it’s not so easy. We saw a desperately thin, orphaned calf at Kanga waterhole and feared the worst. Miraculously a cow who was still feeding her three-year old calf arrived and gave the desperate calf the chance to suckle. There was hardly a dry eye as we watched him walk away with his new family. Back in Mana and Kanga in a two weeks time and update

It's amazing to think that humans have their origins in Africa! Whether you are in the Omo Valley of Ethiopia, the Olduvai Gorge in Tanzania, Sterkfontein or Blombos on South Africa's South Coast you are standing on archeological sites, where the first humans walked.

Some years ago, Mark Tennant took our kids and friends to the Ditsong Natural History museum in Pretoria to meet Mrs Ples (the most complete skull of Austrolophicus Africanus) and then on an underground dig at Sterkfontein, before ending at the very impressive Cradle of Mankind exhibit - what an experience it was!

I recently read 'Born in Africa' by Martin Meredith, a fascinating book in which he describes the trails of paleontological discoveries made by scientists over the last hundred years, including the fierce rivalries, feuds and controversies associated. It is most remarkable to think of how Homonids adapted through climatic changes and that the African beach-dwellers found on the southern Cape coast 50 000 and 60 000 years ago were the ancestors to all of us.

Can you guess where this is?

It's Victoria Falls seen in May - this is the height of the flood when the Zambezi crashes over the falls sending up a plume that can be seen for up to 20 kilometres.

Victoria Falls is the adventure capital of Southern Africa, offering kayaking, white water rafting, Bungy jumping, microlight flips and more.

For me, just seeing these incredible falls is enough to make my heart skip a beat.
