Meet the Walkers from Florida 🇺🇸🇪🇸

We recently had the joy of curating and arranging a custom Camino for the wonderful Walker family. Chris, Jen and their daughter Annie have just arrived in Santiago after 2 nights in Porto and 6 days of walking 👏🏼

Here’s what Jen had to say about their adventure:

“We had a great time! You see a side of people and cities by walking that you don't see when you are rushing through by car or train.

I loved all the places we stayed and it was perfect to have the apartments in the middle of the journey so I could do some laundry and things. It was also so easy to get our certificate because we filled out the form online ahead of time as Jenny suggested.”

My special walking companions 🐕👶🏼

When I’m not walking alongside my fellow peregrinos on the Camino, you can find me with my furry, four-legged daughter, Madison, or my two grandchildren, Nathan and Olivia.

Helen Fearn joined us all the way from Canada to walk the Camino Frances in September ’24 ✨ Here’s what she had to say about her journey:

"Walking the Camino felt like a pipe dream – before I found Camino & Co, I had so many doubts: Am I too old? I’ve never been to Europe, will I get lost? Can I walk far enough each day? Where will I sleep each night? What if I get injured? Will I feel safe traveling solo? Can I find vegan meals?

Jenny from Camino & Co had ALL the answers! Her expertise, patience, and encouragement made all the difference. Thanks to her guidance, I confidently embarked on my journey along the Camino Frances, and it was truly life-changing.

Everything was perfectly arranged—beautiful accommodations, delicious food (yes, plenty of vegan options!), and an incredible group of fellow travellers who became new friends. Some days I chose to walk solo & other days I walked with new friends. Every detail was thoughtfully planned, allowing me to fully enjoy the experience without stress.”

✨ Discover Santiago de Compostela – the ultimate Camino destination! 📍

Santiago de Compostela is not only the final stop for hundreds of thousands of pilgrims each year, but also a vibrant university town and a foodie’s paradise. 🤩

At the end of all our Caminos, we love to spend at least two or three nights soaking in this historic gem of a city, where medieval charm, stunning architecture, and deep spiritual significance come together.

Here are three absolute must-visit spots while we’re there:

⛪ The Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela – A breathtaking masterpiece of Romanesque, Gothic, and Baroque architecture, this cathedral is home to the shrine of St. James the Apostle. Pilgrims from around the world gather here to witness the famous Botafumeiro, a giant incense burner that swings across the nave.

🎓 The University of Santiago de Compostela – Founded in 1495, this historic university is one of Spain’s oldest and most prestigious. Its grand buildings, lively student atmosphere, and hidden courtyards add to the city’s dynamic character.

🥘 The Mercado de Abastos – A bustling fresh food market where you’ll find top-quality seafood, local cheeses, and Galician specialties like pulpo a la gallega (Galician-style octopus). A must-visit for food lovers!

Beyond these highlights, we love getting lost in the city’s charming cobbled streets, discovering cozy cafés, artisan shops, and hidden corners that make Santiago de Compostela so magical.

Have you been to Santiago yet? What was your favorite spot? 👇💭

Routes of the Camino de Santiago 🗺️

There are an endless number of routes you can choose to take on the Camino de Santiago. “Camino de Santiago" translates directly to “road to Santiago”, so essentially, you can start walking from anywhere in the world, but you must ultimately end up at the Cathedral in Santiago de Compostela ⛪️

💡Remember, medieval pilgrims simply left from their own front doors. Some modern pilgrims, particularly those living in Spain, still do that.

This being said, however, there are a few major routes that walkers tend to gravitate towards. These are the top 5 routes in order of popularity:

🇫🇷Camino Francés (The French Way)
🇵🇹Camino Portugués (The Portuguese Way)
🇬🇧Camino Inglés (The English Way)
⌛️Camino Primitivo (The Primitive Way)
🧭 Camino del Norte (The Northern Way)

Wondering which route is best for you? We can help with that. Get in touch with Jenny-Lee at [email protected] to request a custom itinerary best suited to your preferred dates, climate and activities.

⏳ People choose to walk the Camino for different reasons at different points in their lives. For Ishwar and Cookie, it was the perfect way to celebrate their retirement! Read more about their journey below:

"Last year, after retiring, we were looking for a special way to celebrate this new chapter of our lives. Having travelled extensively over the years, we wanted an adventure that would be both physically rewarding and spiritually meaningful. We discovered the Camino de Santiago, and it immediately felt like the perfect journey to mark this moment in our lives.

The logistics of walking the Camino seemed daunting at first, but that’s when we found Camino & Co, led by Jenny-Lee. She made the planning process incredibly easy, offering clear guidance and support from start to finish. Jenny’s warmth and passion for the Camino reassured us, making the entire experience feel exciting rather than overwhelming.

One of the highlights of our journey was arriving in a new town every night and walking through beautiful landscapes and small villages. We didn’t just walk the Camino—we connected with fellow pilgrims who became friends. There’s something unique about sharing this experience that bonds you with others in a meaningful way. The food in each town was another delightful part of the journey!

As we completed the journey, we felt a sense of gratitude for life, making this experience truly unforgettable."

Say goodbye to data roaming and hello to the eSIM! ✈️

While walking on the Camino, you want to stay in contact with your family, be able to check directions and find the closest coffee stop en route. So how can you do this when walking in the countryside with no wifi nearby?

🇪🇸 Unless you're a Spanish resident, you have two options: enable data roaming on your phone at a costly price or download a digital eSIM that allows you to access more reliable local networks at cost-effective prices.

We've found the easiest way is to use an Airalo eSIM📱All you do is download the app on your phone and choose the data package you need. You can use the discount code JENNYR1798 to get $3 USD off your first package. Just follow the link https://ref.airalo.com/Wjy2 🔗

When walking with Camino & Co, this is something we will help you sort out when we touch down on Spanish soil ✈️

What is ETIAS and when will it matter? 💭

If you’re looking at travelling to Europe in 2025, you’ve probably heard some rumblings about ETIAS… So what’s it all about?

ETIAS stands for European Travel Information and Authorisation System, and essentially it is a new entry requirement for visa-exempt nationals travelling to the Schengen countries. It’s something you need to apply for online and will be valid for 3 years 🗓️

So when will ETIAS be required? That’s the confusing bit. There is no official date yet, but what we do know is that it will not be applicable before July 2025.

The good news? As a traveller with Camino & Co, this is not something you need to stress about as we’re on top of it! And if you’re travelling on a South African passport, this does not apply to you.

For more info and updates, you can check the official website here: https://travel-europe.europa.eu/etias_en

Meet the mother and daughter duo Teneille and Lee-Ann who joined for our Sep ‘24 Camino Frances 👩🏻👱🏼‍♀️Here is what Teneille had to say about her adventure:

“For me, walking the Camino had been a bucket list item ever since I moved to Cape Town ten years ago and met the inspiring Jenny-Lee. Following a life-altering personal event, the Camino evolved from a desire into a necessity. In 2024, everything fell into place, and I finally had the privilege of fulfilling this dream alongside my mom. This trip will forever hold a special place in our hearts, its memories cherished for a lifetime.

Along the route, Peregrinos greet one another with the phrase “Buen Camino” – wishing a good walk. As we completed the final kilometres of the route, we carried in our hearts not only the joy of our shared journey but also the invaluable lessons learnt along the way – ready to move forward into the next chapter of our lives.

Choosing Camino and Co was, without a doubt, the best decision we made. Every detail was impeccably arranged from start to finish, freeing us to simply enjoy the experience. My deepest gratitude goes to Jenny, her trusted second-in-command Dave, and everyone at Camino and Co for making this dream come true.”

💭To Camino alone or Camino together?

One of the big decisions you need to make when planning for your Camino is who to walk with: by yourself or with some good company?

We believe there is beauty to be found both ways. That’s why our adventures offer the best of both worlds: the security of a group combined with the serenity of walking alone 🚶🏽‍♀️

When you walk with Camino & Co, there is always someone close by should you need to confirm directions, borrow supplies or simply have a good conversation - but every morning when you set out, you are free to walk exactly as you like. Start when you like, stop when you like, eat when you like, pray when you like, talk when you like and make your Camino your very own 🌟

You’ve just woken up along with the rising Galician sun and you’re about to embark on a day of walking with Camino & Co… What can you expect? 🤔

We want to simply say that you can expect the unexpected - but don’t worry, we won’t leave you hanging… Here are some key highlights to expect from a typical day en route the Camino de Santiago:

🌟After a great night’s rest in a beautiful accommodation, you’ll wake up to a delicious breakfast packed with local flavours.

🌟Your luggage will be collected at 8am, allowing you to walk with only a light day pack.

🌟 You can decide whether to walk with the group departing around 8-9am, or you can set out on your own for a solo walk at whatever time suites you. You will always be able to contact the group should you want to meet up or double check you’re still on track.

🌟 At around 5km there is always an obligatory coffee/tea stop, although that can happen anywhere along the trip! And you can find lunch on the go at a local supermarket or a cafe en route.

🌟Take your time to meander through the forests, fields and towns as check in at the next accommodation will only be around 2.30 pm.

🌟 After checking in, it’s time for a siesta and village exploration. Then you can choose to join the group for a pilgrim dinner at a local restaurant or you can do you own thing.

🌟 Sleep and repeat!

Although we cannot tell you exactly what to expect, we can guarantee that you’ll walk away with well-exercised legs, invigorated taste buds, a refreshed mind and a few new friends!

✅ 45 travellers joined - 30 of which were new faces, 12 second timers and 5 third timers

✅ 7 countries represented by our travellers

✅ 3 routes explored - 1 of which was a brand new route for Camino & Co

Thank you for all your support over the past year - what an adventure it has been with very good company. We look forward to continuing the journey into 2025. Upwards and onwards!
