2025 training is a go 🏁

Over the weekend a few of the ladies joining for the Camino Frances in September came together to start getting their shoes walked in👟 We enjoyed the beautiful sights and sounds of Stellenbosch on a stunning Sunday evening and stopped for a photo on the iconic Hangbrug 📸

Looking forward to many miles ahead with such good company!

💭To Camino alone or Camino together?

One of the big decisions you need to make when planning for your Camino is who to walk with: by yourself or with some good company?

We believe there is beauty to be found both ways. That’s why our adventures offer the best of both worlds: the security of a group combined with the serenity of walking alone 🚶🏽‍♀️

When you walk with Camino & Co, there is always someone close by should you need to confirm directions, borrow supplies or simply have a good conversation - but every morning when you set out, you are free to walk exactly as you like. Start when you like, stop when you like, eat when you like, pray when you like, talk when you like and make your Camino your very own 🌟

The Pilgrim's Office has just released the official statistics. Here are the highlights ⬇️

🇺🇸 🇿🇦 42% of all pilgrims were Spanish and 48% international. Pilgrims from the USA were the largest group of internationals with 38 052 American walkers and South Africans represented the 25th largest group.

🗓️ The busiest month en route was May with 69 572 pilgrims receiving their Compostela, while January was the quietest month, seeing only 2 125 pilgrims.

📍 The most popular route by far was the French Way, with 47% of all pilgrims choosing to take this route. Ranking 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th in terms of popularity was the Portuguese Way, the Portuguese Coastal Route, the English Way and the Primitivo respectively.

You’ve just woken up along with the rising Galician sun and you’re about to embark on a day of walking with Camino & Co… What can you expect? 🤔

We want to simply say that you can expect the unexpected - but don’t worry, we won’t leave you hanging… Here are some key highlights to expect from a typical day en route the Camino de Santiago:

🌟After a great night’s rest in a beautiful accommodation, you’ll wake up to a delicious breakfast packed with local flavours.

🌟Your luggage will be collected at 8am, allowing you to walk with only a light day pack.

🌟 You can decide whether to walk with the group departing around 8-9am, or you can set out on your own for a solo walk at whatever time suites you. You will always be able to contact the group should you want to meet up or double check you’re still on track.

🌟 At around 5km there is always an obligatory coffee/tea stop, although that can happen anywhere along the trip! And you can find lunch on the go at a local supermarket or a cafe en route.

🌟Take your time to meander through the forests, fields and towns as check in at the next accommodation will only be around 2.30 pm.

🌟 After checking in, it’s time for a siesta and village exploration. Then you can choose to join the group for a pilgrim dinner at a local restaurant or you can do you own thing.

🌟 Sleep and repeat!

Although we cannot tell you exactly what to expect, we can guarantee that you’ll walk away with well-exercised legs, invigorated taste buds, a refreshed mind and a few new friends!

Walking into the new year with gratitude, joy and anticipation 🌟

As a new year begins, it is a great time to take stock of the previous year and count our blessings. Here’s a rundown of our 2024 in numbers:

✅ 450 official kilometres walked

✅ 45 travellers joined - 30 of which were new faces, 12 second timers and 5 third timers

✅ 7 countries represented by our travellers

✅ 3 routes explored - 1 of which was a brand new route for Camino & Co

Thank you for all your support over the past year - what an adventure it has been with very good company. We look forward to continuing the journey into 2025. Upwards and onwards!

💭 Ever wondered why we call our adventures ‘Caminos’ and not simply ‘hikes’? Good question!

Directly translated, the Spanish word ‘Camino’ means ‘the Way’ or ‘path to travel’. So technically a hike could be a Camino. The term was popularised, however, by the historic pilgrimage of the Camino de Santiago and is now is used more widely to describe walking journeys underpinned by a deeper meaning than simply ‘getting to the top of the mountain’ ⛰️

Although there is no hard and fast rule about what makes a Camino different to a hike, for us at Camino and Co, our Camino adventures are marked by a desire to get away from the hustle and bustle of daily life to experience new sights and sounds alongside good friends, finding fresh inspiration to continue putting one foot in front of the other in the larger journey of life 🌟

Before the year comes to an end, some BIG THANKS are in order 🙏🏼 Shout out to Minette Pretorius for being the most brilliant co-host we could ask for!

Minette and I have been friends for over 25 years, and throughout this time we have enjoyed a shared passion for walking, travelling and loving people 🧡

What a privilege it has been to now bring her along on the Camino & Co journey! She has co-hosted 3 Camino tours with me in 2024 and will be officially leading her first group in 2025 🗓️

We look forward to many more adventures alongside this lovely lady! 🌟

73km later and we made it to Hermanus 🐳

They say that the beauty is often found in the journey, not the destination - but with this trip, there was just beauty all round! Over 5 days of walking we crossed mountains, rivers, valleys, vineyards and shorelines to finally arrive in the stunning coastal town of Hermanus for a celebratory lunch 🥂

Thank you to the Hermanus Camino for the incredible guides, organisation and all the special touches along the way - we look forward to walking with you again next year 🗓️

Good morning from the Hermanus Camino 👋🏼

Today is our first day of walking and we are officially the 251st group embarking on this epic adventure! We can’t wait to experience the beauty of the Hemel en Aarde Valley on foot - albeit with a little bit of water falling from the Hemel to the Aarde ☔️🌧️

Stay tuned!

WARNING: Camino & Co adventures can be addictive ⚠️

One of the greatest joys of our work is found in the deep friendships we form with those who journey with us - and even better when they return for a second or third time!

On our most recent Camino we had Trudy and Mike from Colorado join for their 3rd adventure with us, and Chris and Aat from South Africa for their 2nd time.

Here’s to many more! 🍻

Meet An and Tiaan Bakkas - the pioneering pilgrims! 🌟

We recently had the privilege of curating a custom itinerary for this South African couple to take on the Camino de Santiago by themselves. They let us know their dates and preferred route, and we handled the rest!

An says of the adventure, “It was an amazing experience and beautiful memories were made. Thanks to Jenny we could focus on our walking experience and not worry about logistics”.

If your availibility does not align with one of our guided trips, or you would simply prefer to walk on your own, we would love to put together a custom itinerary for you. Get in touch at 082 379 5613 or [email protected] 📧

There's something special about Camino hospitality 🇪🇸

We've been staying at this beautiful country villa in rural Morgade for the past 6 Camino Frances adventures, and every time we arrive we are welcomed with open arms by the beautiful family that runs it. With each visit, our travellers are stunned by the delicious homemade bread, hearty meals and the best Sangria in Spain - all made with love by the beautiful Abuelita and her daughters.

Looking forward to our next visit already!

The Portuguese Camino is calling! Are you going to pick up? 🔊🇵🇹

Join us in 2025 as we take the road less travelled, walking 200km of the Portuguese coastal and interior route. One of the things we love most about this unique route is that you are able to enjoy the full Camino experience away from the crowds.

You have 6 months to get your bags packed - let's go!

Get in touch with Jenny at 082 379 5613 or [email protected] for the full itinerary.

The Camino provides for the horses!

A common expression used amongst pilgrims on the Camino de Santiago is ‘the Camino will provide’. The sentiment is that whatever you need en route will find its way to you.

This truth can be fulfilled in many different ways - perhaps a poignant conversation with a stranger whilst walking, a coffee shop around the right corner, a friendly local to point you in the right direction, or even an apple for the beautiful horse at the side of the road 🍎🍎
