Thailand to allow tourists to pay with Bitcoin

Thailand is launching a pilot project in Phuket that will enable tourists to use Bitcoin for payments.

Speaking at a seminar organised by the Marketing Association of Thailand, Thailand Deputy Minister and Finance Minister, Pichai Chunhavajira, said it would test cryptocurrency transactions in the hope that it would make it easier for foreign tourists to pay for goods and services, reports Live Bitcoin News.

Chunhavajira said legislation was already in place and that participants would need to register their Bitcoin through licensed Thai exchanges and verify their identity.

Once registered, Bitcoin payments will be automatically converted to Thai baht at the time of transaction, according to local news outlet, Thaiger.

Dubai tightens visa rules for minors

Dubai’s visa policy for minors now requires travellers under the age of 18 to be accompanied by at least one parent.

According to the Dubai Visa Processing Centre South Africa, the change was first announced in 2023 and implemented late last year, replacing the previous policy that allowed minors to travel with a consent letter authorising any adult chaperone.

JNB secures jet fuel supply – for now

Acsa has confirmed that it has secured enough jet fuel supply for OR Tambo International Airport (JNB) for January following the fire at the National Petroleum Refiners of South Africa (NATREF) refinery earlier this month, which has impacted fuel production nationally, as reported by Travel News.

The industry is now collaborating to mitigate any disruption during February.

SAA sets off to Dar es Salaam

Today (January 20), SAA resumed daily flights between Johannesburg and Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.

The daily flight departs Johannesburg at 22h00 and arrives in Dar es Salaam at 02h30 the following day. The return flight departs Dar es Salaam at 05h10 and arrives in Johannesburg at 07h55.

Dar es Salaam is an important regional economic and logistical hub. The city acts as a gateway for popular tourist attractions in the region and is a corporate destination for South Africans, who account for a significant proportion of foreign direct investment in Tanzania.

“This flight is not simply a milestone for SAA and linking Johannesburg and Dar es Salaam through air travel; it heralds a bridge that connects two of Africa’s most influential economies,” said Professor John Lamola, SAA’s interim CEO.

Lamola added that the relaunch represented SAA’s strategic initiative to strengthen the airline’s presence across Africa. “SAA’s regional network has emerged as a top performer, contributing significantly to the revenue of the SAA Group. More importantly, these regional connections are crucial for the broader economic growth of South Africa.”

Loyalty no longer goes the extra mile

Airline loyalty miles are losing their power, prompting travellers to chase perks over points. For South African leisure and corporate travellers, loyalty programmes still hold appeal, but more emphasis is now placed on climbing the tiers to access premium benefits rather than accumulating miles.

Frequent flyers: Tiers over miles
David van den Heever-Liebenberg, Director and Travel Specialist at Marmalade Toast, notes a resurgence of frequent travellers choosing higher fare tickets with airlines where they hold loyalty memberships, rather than opting for cheaper flights that would dilute their earned points across several carriers.

All-inclusive cruising: economical or extravagant?

There has been a strong uptake in all-inclusive cruise packages among South Africans as they seek out more comprehensive experiences that remain within budget.

However, cruise experts note that it is important for travel agents to understand that there are two types of ‘all-inclusive’ cruise fares – those that require passengers to buy premium alcoholic beverage packages and additional experiential excursions over-and-above the bundled fare, and those that include these in the fare.

Mauritania introduces e-visas

On January 5, Mauritania launched an electronic visa (e-visa) system for international travellers visiting the country.

A statement made by the Embassy of the Islamic Republic of Mauritania to South Africa informed South Africans that, from January 5, all visitors were required to obtain a compulsory e-visa before boarding their flight to Mauritania.

The e-visas can be obtained through the official Mauritanian National Agency for the Population Register and Secure Titles website. The website offers e-visas for durations of 30, 60 and 90 days.

Visa applicants must provide their full name, date of birth, nationality, profession, email address, phone number, and purpose of stay as well as date of arrival, desired number of entries and passport details. Applicants must also submit a passport-style photo and a copy of their passport, valid for at least six months.

After receiving the visa approval from the portal, the document, bearing a QR code, must be printed and presented to security personnel. The visa fees must be paid upon arrival in Mauritania.

South Africans previously required a visa-on-arrival to visit Mauritania.

Mango – last chance for revival?

The prospective buyer of Mango, Ubuntu Air Services, is exploring a partnership with an airline that already holds licences and an Air Operator Certificate. This move comes in the wake of the cancellation of Mango’s licences late last year.

In a status report, Sipho Sono, Mango’s business rescue practitioner (BRP), informed creditors and affected parties that on November 15, 2024, the Air Services Licensing Council (ASLC) issued a letter confirming its decision to cancel Mango’s Air Service Licences. The cancellation followed a two-year licence suspension imposed in 2022 due to non-compliance and Mango’s failure to operate licensed air services for an uninterrupted period exceeding 12 months, as reported by Travel News.

QF JNB flights delayed by falling space debris

Qantas has had to delay several flights between Sydney and Johannesburg in recent weeks due to falling debris from SpaceX rockets in the southern Indian Ocean.

The airline said last-minute changes to the location and timing of SpaceX’s Falcon rocket re-entries had caused these delays, which could last up to six hours, reports Reuters.

“While we try to make any changes to our schedule in advance, the timing of recent launches has moved around at late notice, which has meant we’ve had to delay some flights just prior to departure,” said Ben Holland, head of the Qantas Operations Centre.

Holland said the airline was in contact with SpaceX to refine entry zones and time frames, with the aim of reducing future disruption.

The 134 Falcon 9 and Falcon Heavy rockets, which carry both satellites and humans into space, often target the southern Indian Ocean for re-entry due to its remoteness. While the most expensive parts of the rocket are reusable, some components burn on re-entry, resulting in debris that poses a potential risk.

“Customers generally understand that this is outside of the airline’s control and that we can’t fly in the area when a rocket re-entry is taking place,” said Holland.

New requirement for Umrah 2025 travellers

The Ministry of Health of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has issued updated health requirements and recommendations for individuals planning to travel to the country to perform Umrah in 2025.

All travellers, one year and older, from all countries, intending to perform Umrah, must be vaccinated against Meningococcal meningitis using one of two approved vaccines.

Meningococcal quadrivalent (ACYW-135) polysaccharide vaccine received within the last three years and at least ten days before arrival, or;
Meningococcal quadrivalent (ACYW-135) conjugated2 vaccine received within the last five years and at least ten days before arrival.

“Health authorities in the country of origin should ensure that the traveller receives the approved vaccine within the above validity period and clearly indicate the name, type, and date of administration on the traveller’s vaccination certificate. If the type of vaccine is not indicated on the certificate, the vaccine would be considered valid for three years only from the date of administration,” the Ministry says.

Monday Smile: Airlink helps save endangered animals

A global operation has successfully returned nearly 1 000 vulnerable and endangered animals to Madagascar, and has evolved into one of the world’s largest repatriations in the fight against illegal wildlife trade.

Early last year, nearly 1 000 tortoises and lemurs were seized as part of an international law enforcement operation while being trafficked through Thailand for likely sale into the international illegal pet trade.
