FlySafair clarifies licence dispute

Kirby Gordon, FlySafair Chief Marketing Officer, has highlighted in a communication to the trade that the International Air Services Council's non-compliance finding over its ownership structure applies only to the airline’s international licence.

“We hold an international and a domestic licence (amongst others) and so, if any, this could only impact our international departures,” he said.

Gordon added that FlySafair remained committed to compliance and transparency, especially with legal requirements.

“With the advice and guidance of our legal counsel, FlySafair has been of the understanding that it is fully compliant with all legislative requirements regarding its shareholding structure, and we intend to remain so. As such, we shall continue to engage in the processes afforded to us in law to find a resolution that satisfies all parties.”

Gordon further noted that a sudden suspension of services would be an extreme outcome.

“We are working closely with the authorities and we are prepared to respond effectively to minimise any disruption and safeguard the travel experience of our valued customers.”

Bubbling under - the growing dive travel market

The global market for diving tourism is set to soar in the next few years, but to successfully sell dive trips, agents need to understand the intricacies of the diving world and what these travellers need.

According to 2023 research from Allied Market Research, the global diving tourism market, which was valued at $3,9 billion (R70 billion) in 2022, will grow at a compound annual growth rate of 15,9% from 2023 to 2030. Researchers believe this increase in diving tourism is driven by an increased interest in adventure travel globally.

Delivery delays hold back African airlines

Demand for flights on African airlines continues to recover post-pandemic, but aircraft and component delivery remains at a low level, forcing African airlines to rely on costly alternatives or halt their growth.

While passenger demand increases, particularly in the western and northern regions of the continent, African airlines are struggling to meet the growing need for capacity.

KZN’s new all-inclusives need airlift boost

While KwaZulu-Natal has voiced its desire to open up to investment in all-inclusive resorts (such as South Africa’s first Club Med on the North Coast and the Blue Marlin All-Inclusive Seascape, recently opened on the South Coast), there are questions over the accessibility of these resorts for international visitors. To give these resorts true international appeal, KZN needs more international airlift into Durban’s King Shaka International Airport.

Provincial authorities plan to use these new resorts to grow the international, inbound market. “Insights on global trends indicate that certain markets, like the French, Belgian and UK, are keen on all-inclusive resorts. So having such resorts will go a long way in opening new European markets for KwaZulu-Natal and could possibly lead to more all-inclusive resorts,” the KZN Tourism and Film Authority (KZNTFA) told Travel News.

World’s longest suspension bridge for Italy

Following years of planning, the Italian government along with the EU, has confirmed that the construction of a suspension bridge to connect mainland Italy with the island of Sicily, will begin at the end of this year.

The road and rail bridge will span three kilometres, making it the longest suspension bridge in the world, according to Euronews.

A grant agreement will see the EU cover 50% of the executive design costs of the bridge infrastructure. The total estimated cost of construction is €14,6 billion (R274 billion)

While many organisations support the construction of the bridge to ease the pressure on the overcrowded ferry services that currently offering the only link to the island, environmental groups fear the bridge’s construction may disrupt the active seismic zone and the local ecosystem.

We need airlift! – Durban

While domestic tourism to Durban is stable, the number of international visitors to KZN remains 80% below pre-COVID levels. This is a strong driver for Durban’s air route development committee, Durban Direct, to prioritise the improvement of air access into the city.

Durban Direct was established to improve access to KZN and is a collaborative initiative between several stakeholders with the aim of attracting direct flights, foreign business interest, investment and tourism.

Lebombo Border closed

The Lebombo Border Post between South Africa and Mozambique has been temporarily closed due to security concerns after vehicles were torched on the Mozambican side yesterday, November 5.

Border Management Authority (BMA) Commissioner Dr Michael Masiapato said the decision prioritised the safety of cross-border transporters and travellers.

The BMA is working closely with Mozambican authorities and South African law enforcement to monitor the situation and reopen the border when safe.

"All stakeholders should avoid using the Lebombo Border and consider alternative routes to Mozambique until the situation stabilises," advised Masiapato, noting that seven Mozambican officials had sought refuge in South Africa.

The BMA and SARS will provide real-time updates through official channels.
