_PHASE 1_

*ACCULTURATION* is what happened...

Acculturation is a process of social, psychological, and cultural change that stems from the balancing of two cultures while adapting to the prevailing culture of the society. ... At this group level, acculturation often results in changes to _culture_ , *religious* practices, health care, and other social institutions...

*Example of acculturation*

1. The transfer of values and customs from one group to another...

2. People dressing in Western clothing...

_How best to understand the process..._

The process of sharing and learning the cultural traits (
Character traits are valued aspects of a person's behavior, example patient, unfaithful, or jealous) or social patterns of another group.

The 4 types or steps of Acculturation are the following...

1. *Integration* ...into the Devotee or majority Culture

2. *Assimilation* during this step the fusion of the minority into the culture of the majority takes form

3. *Separation* during this step the realisation kicks in... resources must be shared separation happens...

4. *Marginalisation* .. during this step the minority feels the pressure from the majority culture and feels rejected and marginalized ... why? because you are a minority, and belong to another Cultural group.

So, what is *acculturation* and what is *assimilation* ?

In _assimilation_ , the minority culture is fully absorbed into the majority culture...

_Acculturation_ occurs when the minority culture changes but is still able to retain unique cultural markers of language, food and customs.

Acculturation is also a two way process as both cultures are changed.

_PHASE 2_

*Enculturation*

_Enculturation_ is the process by which people learn the dynamics of their surrounding culture and acquire values and norms appropriate or necessary to that culture and its worldviews.

_How do you know that you have passed the cultural Test..._

_Enculturation_ results in _competence_ in the language, values, and rituals of the Devotee's culture...

Vetrou dit gaan goed met julle en julle excited vir die semi finals wat voorle vir die wat bokke is ensovoorts.

Hemelbesem is n inspirasie vir die wat nie weet van hul herkoms en identiteit as eerste nasie mense. n Paar jaar gelede wat ek die page begin het was dit ook omdat ek meer bewus geraak het van my herkoms en gevoel het ons sogenaamde bruin mense weet niks oor hul geskiedenis nie, myself ingesluit. Raakwys is vir hierdie doel gebore.

Ons is mooi mense en uniek.

Lekker naweek aan my Khoekhoe en San familie, en weet dat God ons nooit vergeet het nie andersins sal ons nooit hierdie herlewing van eerste nasie mense in ons leeftyd kon aanskou nie.

Gravestone and Memorial Service for Khoi/Sonqais leader, Ouma G***t Seekoei

The Khoi/Sonqais community would like to pay tribute to our great leader, Ouma G***t Seekoei, one of just two speakers of the endangered N|uu language, believed to be more than 25 000 years old.

To financial difficulties, Ouma G***t's family could not provide a Gravestone when laying her to rest after passing on May 27, 2020, in Upington.

Her family and community would like to raise R5000 to pay for her stone and memorial service to celebrate her life.

Ouma G***t Seekoei and her younger sister Queen Katrina Esau were among the last speakers of the critically endangered language N|uu. They were instrumental in fighting for the recognition, preservation, survival and promotion of the N! UU language. In 2016, Queen Katrina was awarded recognition by President Jacob Zuma for her work to preserve the Khoisan heritage.

Through Ouma G***t Seekoei and Queen Katrina's efforts, we as South Africans (the First Indigenous People) can realize who we are and that we have a history, culture and heritage to be proud of and preserve for future generations to come.

When Ouma G***t Seekoei was born, speaking her native dialect in public could have legally gotten her shot. In 1936, the same year as the Johannesburg Empire Exhibition, Pretoria issued the final license allowing the killing of native Southern Africans.

Let us honour Ouma G***t Seekoei by laying her to rest with a Gravestone she deserves! Please share this campaign link far and wide.

In memory of the late Elsie Vaalbooi, Komani San N|uu language speaker.

Gone, but not forgotten.😇🙏🙏🙏

The MOTTO of the Northern Cape Province is “Sa ||a !aĩsi 'uĩsi” (“We go to a better life”) – given in 1997 by ELSIE VAALBOOI speaking the Nǀuu dialect of the Nǁng language.

Elsie Vaalbooi, of the ǂKhomani (Nǁnǂe) San community, was born around the turn of the 20th century, and was living at Rietfontein, Northern Cape when she assisted linguists and provincial officials in providing the motto. She died on 7 October 2002.

A tombstone erected by the provincial Department of Sport Arts and Culture at her grave in Rietfontein was unveiled in September 2019 (pictured alongside is her son Petrus Vaalbooi) - acknowledged her role in the preservation and promotion of the N|uu language.
