BLACK LEOPARDS

Encounters with black leopards, even a glimpse of one as it slips into a thicket, are what once in a lifetime wildlife sightings are made of. Laikipia in Kenya, is home to the largest known population of black leopards, yet they remain rare and elusive.

What makes the leopard black, is melanism, an extremely rare condition that happens when the body produces an excess of dark pigment which colours the fur and skin. Remarkably, the rosettes of the leopards fur can still be seen despite the black appearance. Quite magnificent, the black leopard is yet another wonder of nature, consider yourself beyond lucky if you get to tick this beautiful creature off your sightings list.

The Desert Adapted Lions of Namibia

Elusive and seldom seen, the mysterious desert lions of Namibia have survived along the Namib’s Skeleton Coast and Namibia’s Kunene region for decades. In this merciless desert environment, the lions have adapted to be hardy and survive here despite the extreme conditions they face. They don’t need to drink water but get all the moisture they need from their kill such as ostrich, gemsbok and the occasional seal (if they dare catch one).

These magnificent creatures are unique to the Namib Desert and are vital in sustaining the Namibian tourism industry. Their biggest threat is man, in particular local communities that shoot them when they prey on their cattle. It’s thus crucial that conservation projects such as The Desert Lion Conservation Project are supported to manage not only the human-lion conflict, but also to monitor their behaviour and population.

Odzala-Kokoua National Park in the Republic of Congo (not to be confused with the Democratic Republic of Congo, a separate country located 200 miles to the east), is home to one of the largest populations of Western Lowland Gorillas. A wonderful property exists in the park, called Kamba, where they offer an incredible Rainforest Experience which includes an epic adventure of gorilla-tracking.

As the most widespread gorilla subspecies, the western lowland gorillas live in remote, thick tropical rainforests, where they find plenty of food for their vegetarian diet. They are the smallest of the four gorilla subspecies, with shorter black-brown hair, longer arms and a more prominent ridge along their brow.

A trip to Kamba offers a once in a lifetime opportunity to get off the beaten track and to see these amazing animals in their natural habitat.

To find out more about the rainforest experience and gorilla tracking at Kamba, get in touch through the link in our bio.👆

Cape Town has no shortage of amazing coffee spots, but there aren't too many that can boast a location like Sentinel Cafe. Primely positioned on the magnificent Hout Bay beach, with amazing coffee and views across the bay to The Sentinel itself, we thought this would be a great place to catch up with Dionne and also support a local charity initiative.

Not only is this venue home to the Sentinel Cafe but it is also home to the Sentinel Ocean Alliance, an incredible non-governmental organization that creates ocean-based opportunities and provides environmental education to at risk youth of South Africa’s coastal communities. In a diverse country like South Africa, organisations like this are critical to under resourced communities and provide invaluable support and education to the local youth.

Chatting to Dionne, she highlighted the importance of supporting these local initiatives in the places that we travel to and really seeking out local businesses that are making a difference on the ground and in the communities that they serve. Quite literally the hidden gems!

To find out more about Sentinel Ocean Alliance, you can follow their instagram page or read more about their story at: https://sentineloceanalliance.org/pages/about-us

FAN MAIL!

Getting feedback like this is a true highlight for us. To hear that we have helped to create a "trip of a lifetime" and "memories forever" helps to fuel our passion for what we do and to always strive to create a dream holiday experience that will exceed your expectations.

‘This was a trip of a lifetime with an agent of a lifetime!! We are the Foster family and planned a trip to Africa for 16 days and 5 countries- Rwanda, Tanzania, Kenya, Zimbabwe, and South Africa. Every detail from logistics of traveling - packing, vaccines, visas, meals, plane, helicopter, guide vehicles and constant communication - was spectacular. We were guided like VIP’s through the entire trip. My trip was planned on the Wildebeest migration crossing and the Gorilla trekking in Rwanda. The time of year was recommended based on this. Our lodging was second-to-none with 5-star service including laundry, chefs, and tour operators.

A TRIP OF A LIFETIME!! Memories forever!! Dionne is a true friend now!
Sincerely,
Troy Foster’

Bites Beach Café by Morukuru Family De Hoop injected new life into “Koppie Alleen”, a remote, beautiful and historic thatched fisherman’s cottage situated on rocks, next to sand dunes with views of the magnificent shoreline of the untamed De Hoop Nature Reserve. The reserve is situated near Cape Agulhas in the Western Cape of South Africa, just 3 hours from Cape Town.

The position of the café offers a ringside seat for land-based whale watching, when the Southern Right whales migrate to the De Hoop waters to calve between July and the end of October. A fireplace takes the chill off those winter months, and, in summer, the outdoor seating offers visitors the perfect arena from which to take in and soak up the remarkable wildlife, views and sun.

With a casual daytime menu of fresh fish, wood-fired pizzas and burgers, Bites is open to walkers and day visitors to De Hoop Nature Reserve for lunch and coffee (as well as Morukuru Family De Hoop residents) whilst in the evening it is exclusively for Morukuru Family guests, either from Beach Lodge or Ocean House, when the menu will offer African-themed fine dining featuring South African dishes with a twist. It will also be used for sundowners, breakfasts and special occasions for Morukuru Family guests.

With a position and view that you would find hard to beat anywhere in the world, it is a must if you are lucky enough to be visiting De Hoop in the future.

WORLD CITIES - WHAT TO DO IN KIGALI

The bustling City of Kigali is the capital of Rwanda and is located at Rwanda’s geographical heart. It sprawls across numerous hills, ridges and valleys, and has a vibrant restaurant and nightlife scene, along with a number of fascinating sites. Explore the city of Kigali with some of these experiences.

Kimironko Market
Kimironko Market is the largest and most vibrant market in Kigali, offering a true sensory overload. Here, you can find everything from fresh fruits and vegetables to traditional fabrics and handicrafts.

Kigali Genocide Memorial
One of the most important sites in Kigali is the Kigali Genocide Memorial, a place of reflection and remembrance. This memorial is dedicated to the more than 250,000 victims of the 1994 Rwandan Genocide.

Coffee Tours
Rwanda is famous for its coffee, and Kigali provides the perfect starting point for a coffee tour. Coffee is one of the country’s top exports, and the lush hills around the capital are dotted with coffee plantations.

Inema Arts Centre
Kigali’s growing art scene can be experienced firsthand at the Inema Arts Centre, one the most prominent art galleries in Rwanda.

Presidential Palace
This former presidential palace on the eastern outskirts of the city has few exhibits, but it’s interesting to explore, with ‘secret’ rooms and an odd presidential nightclub.

There is so much to explore in Kigali, make it part of your Southern and East African travel experience.

For those of you who love to run, the Run for Rangers event is an amazing opportunity to do what you love and in so doing, contribute to making a tangible difference in the lives of rangers who risk everything to protect endangered species.

Run for Rangers is not just an event, it’s an immersive journey into the heart of conservation. Hosted annually at the breathtaking Babanango Game Reserve, located in the heart of Zululand, KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. This two-day run offers participants the chance to traverse the African wilderness side by side with real rangers. The event goes beyond adventure—and guests experience firsthand the struggles and triumphs of rangers who face daily challenges, from poachers to the Big Five. Through their tagline, "Are you as tough as a ranger?" Runners are invited to test their limits and see what it truly takes to protect Africa's wildlife.

The run is a fantastic way to raise awareness for, and support and uplift game rangers, while taking on a journey of conservation and adventure. For those who prefer not to run or are unable to afford a ticket, there are alternative ways to get involved and support the cause from home.

Registration for the 2025 event is expected to go live in early 2025 so keep an eye out for details. To find out more about the run and to stay updated, follow along on the Run for Rangers Instagram page or take a look at their website: https://www.runforrangers.net

OUR STORY

Since 2002 we are still very passionate about our business, keeping it true to its foundation: owner-run and managed, small, professional with enthusiastic team offering unforgettable, bespoke holidays and unique experiences to the discerning and adventurous traveller.

African Pathfinder was founded by Dionne, following her love for Africa and having travelled far and wide. With her extensive experience in customer service, she instilled what is to this day an important vision of the company: Service Excellence at all times! Gaenor joined her sister three years later, bringing years of tourism and travel knowledge along with her keen eye for detail. Since then the team grew to 3 with the addition of a close friend Lindsay who fell into the position seamlessly and has since been an invaluable colleague, planning incredible holidays for many clients over the years. African Pathfinder is now expanding to a tight team of 6, to ensure we maintain our focus of service levels and values, yet expanding the combined knowledge and expertise to ensure we offer remarkable experiences in and around southern & East Africa.

Our speciality is tailoring each and every holiday itinerary for each and every client – none of the impersonal, mass-market internet packages so often found these days. We’re all about matching the right destination and experiences for you, thinking out the box and building long-term relationships with all our clients!
