_PAINT ME PRETTY

Speed, stamina, familial bonds, and cooperatibe instincts - with the most distinctive fur patterns of them all, there's is nothing quite like being in the company of these incredible creatures.

Second to the furry golds of Uganda, these are, by far, my most favorite of Africa's carnivor.

Endangered, but on the increase, painted wolves, aka African wild dogs or African hunting dogs, are native to sub-saharan Africa, and the key to finding them is knowing where and when to go.

Soooo, find them I did this past July in Botswanas famed Okavango Delta didn't disappoint 👌🏻

Bucket list - absolutely

_RARITY

It's the little things in life that count too right!

I'm happy to finally be back on the back on the road and doing what I enjoy - discovering Uganda

Today's gem - the rather rare Rwenzori 3-horned chameleon 👏🏻👏🏻

Did you know:
They have eyes that can rotate 360 degrees, hence enabling them to see all directions without moving. It also helps them to catch their prey and to protect themselves from their predators.

The Three-horned chameleon is a Rift Valley endemic (i.e., its unique to the region)

_DAZZLE DAY

"A zebra takes its stripes wherever it goes,"
- Maasai Proverb

The most identifiable animals in Africa, zebra stripes, are as unique as fingerprints are to humans, with no two sets of stripes being alike.

A highlight to many a visitor, these, charismatic herbivores can be seen in en masse during the annual migrtation - with Tanzanias Serenegeti, Kenya's Maasai Mara and Botswanas Kalahari Desert and the salt pans of the Makgadigadi the 3 best places to view them.

Today, zebra species are listed from endangered to near-threatened.

Happy World Zebra Day

_CAT - CHING

The breeze from atop her lofty perch

Elevated, agile, and alert - she scans her territory.

Without a doubt, one of the best places to see these magnificent felines is Kenya's the Maasai Mara, home to some of the most majestic of leopards who tend to throw a pose just at the right time 👌🏻

_KAAPSE SE KLOPSE

The 2nd welcomes the annual Tweede Nuwe Jaar Celebrations (2nd of January New Year) in Cape Town.

It's when the Mother City rises to the occasion - and explodes with a flurry of color, song, drumbeat & movement.

Traditionally, the 2nd of January each year is when the slave master's would give their slaves the day off. Many would paint their faces so as not to be recognized by their owners as they marched through the city, a feature still maintained today.

Another bit of hostory is that the very same route used back in the 1860s is still followed by the troops today.

Slaves originally march to the beat of the "ghoema" drum, & which can be seen in the video. After slavery was abolished, brass instruments were added to the mix.

And if you're ever lucky enough to be in Cape Town on the 2nd Janaury, make sure to be in the Bo-Kaap to watch this once in-a-lifetime cultural event

_RADAR EARS

Unique to Africa, and with very large ears, this savannah beauty uses a very characteristic pouncing technique when hunting rodents and small critters.

If you're lucky to see this pint-sized carnivor with extra-long legs, stretched out neck, and huge ears in action, you'll be privy to its patience and swivel head action.

After identifying its prey through its radar like ears, it then leaps high into the air, guided by sound before landing directly on the once-invisible rat.

Seeing them in action is a safari highlight

_JOIN THE DOTS

Critically endangered, there remains in the wild today, some 7,500.

From dwindling habitats, human/wildlife conflict, petting facilities, and the pet trade, cheetahs teeter on the brink of extinction.

When next in their company, make sure to give them space, keep your distance, and let them be.

Today, we celebrate these special cats - International Cheetah Day

_SALAD PLATTER

Did you know that gorillas are selective eaters, their favorite snacks being Brantesia, commonly known as gorilla sugar cane.

Bacera alba (the leaves of which are also edible to humans), Ulera and Memolopsis holestine are also high on thr menu.

Stinging nettles also feature, but only the leaves.

Fruits form about 2% of a gorillas diet with blackberrys and marianthius being firm favourites.

What a life when it revolves around a forest full of delicious greens 🥦🥬🥒🫑🫒
