Dear Guests and Partners,

as you might have heard, SA government has yesterday declared a national state of disaster in South Africa.

From 18.03., travellers from high risk countries like Germany, Italy, UK, USA, Spain, South Korea, Iran and China (may change at any time) are not allowed to enter South Africa.

Furthermore, any foreign national who has visited a high-risk country in the past 20 days will be denied a visa.

We are still currently trying to figure out what all the new information means to our current guests, future guests and us, so please bear with us if you do not get an answer to your e-mails right away. We will answer as soon as we can!

We are currently still almost fully booked and need to take care of our guests staying here now.

Have a lovely day further, stay healthy 🌺

DAY ZERO has moved to the end of August! Well done, everybody. Let us hope there will be lots of rain this winter. Don't forget, the crisis is not over, we still need to save as best as we can, because you never really know what the future will bring 🇿🇦️

As beautiful as it is, the Western Cape is a water-scarce part of the world and is currently experiencing a drought, however, we encourage water wise tourism.

WATER CRISIS IN CAPE TOWN – AN OVERVIEW AND FAQ’s
AS OF OCT 2017 - UPDATED 20.01.2018
(German text in post above)

Dear Guests,

Cape Town is currently suffering the worst drought in 120 years. We would like to give you some more information about it as we would like to prepare you for your holiday in the most beautiful city in the world. Because we need your help. Generally, nothing will stand in the way of your perfect holiday, but we would like to inform you upfront about possible restrictions and effective rules.

After three very dry winter seasons, our dam levels are currently standing at 27% (of which only 17% is usable). Despite the below mentioned restrictions, the so-called DAY ZERO might arrive sometime later during the summer season. As from 01.02.2018, we will be on “water restrictions level 6B”, which means that all Capetonians, and certainly also visitors and tourists, must use LESS THAN 50 LITRES OF WATER PER PERSON PER 24H, only for essential washing, drinking and cooking.

To make the situation a little clearer, herewith the following FAQ’s:

Water crisis in Cape Town, what does it mean for me as a tourist/visitor?
Generally, nothing bad – please just stick to the rules that all Capetonians have to stick to and please just do not expect to be able to use swimming pools in your accommodation or to find juicy green lawns around your guest house. One is not allowed to use more than 50 liters per person per day, for the whole day, no matter if you are at your hotel or guest house, or out and about exploring the city. It is also possible that the water supply to your guest house will be interrupted for short periods of time. Please contact us for any current information.

50 liters per day, how much is that?
A 2-minute shower will use 20 liters of water. A toilet flush around 9 liters. Please keep in mind that the washing of your bedding and towels also counts towards your 50 liters.
This water consumption calculator can give you a great overview: http://mycapetownneeds.co.za/thinkwater/calculator.html

How can I save water best during my trip?
In our guest house, for example, we have placed buckets in the showers so that you can collect the water you used during your short shower and re-use it to flush your toilet after a “number one”. The City of Cape Town asks to not shower longer than two minutes, to turn off taps while brushing your teeth or soaping yourself and only flushing the toilet properly after a “number two”.

Can I use your pool?
We are afraid not :( The filling-up of swimming pools is strictly forbidden. If the pool is not covered, the sun and wind will quickly make the water evaporate. Also, when using a pool during summer time, the pump would have to run and the filter needs regular cleaning, which results in the loss of thousands of liters of water each time. So unfortunately, our pools will be closed until further notice.

How often will I get fresh towels and clean bed linen at Cape Paradise?
As always, we will replace the dirty towels that you have left on the floor in the bathroom. We kindly ask you to hang yours up again and use them for as long as possible. Due to the water crisis, we only change bed linen on request during longer stays.

Shall I cancel my trip to Cape Town to avoid making the situation worse?
No, please don’t, as long as water is still coming from the taps. In our opinion, it would be disastrous for Cape Town if the visitors stayed away as many jobs will be lost and in the end of the day, a lot of people would not be able to feed their families anymore. If you want to help Cape Town, come visit and save water as best as you can. Every drop of water counts. We are looking forward to welcoming you here!

Will you charge an extra fee to your guests for higher water bills
you have to pay?
Our water bill has gone up by more than 100% despite all and every saving measure we have implemented. Still, we do not plan to charge our guests extra. We are appealing to our guests to please keep the water usage to a minimum in order for us to avoid higher water tariffs and possible fines.

I am very interested in getting more information on the drought and the restrictions.
Where can I find it?
On www.capetown.gov.za/thinkwater you will find all the information you need.

THANK YOU FOR HELPING US SAVE WATER. ENJOY YOUR HOLIDAY!

WASSERKRISE IN KAPSTADT – EIN ÜBERBLICK UND FAQ’s – STAND OKT 2017 - UPDATE 20.01.2018
(English text – please see next post)

Was bedeutet 50 Liter pro Person pro Tag?
http://mycapetownneeds.co.za/thinkwater/calculator.html
