‘Every time I join one of our Mobi-kayak trips I’m just blown away by the experience. Small bespoke groups with informative guides with safety in mind. There might be cheaper tours out there but that’s not what we about. A truly authentic experience that I’m proud to share. ‘

Brilliant 🤩 tour yesterday. Glad to see the penguins making a return after all the work at Seafourth. Our new kayaks are a dream to paddle and so glad I was able to contribute to the design to make this a great option kayak for short paddle routes off the coast and inland waters.

Why we all need an adventure

If you’re stuck in a rut, you might try going on a physical or mental adventure, Arthur C. Brooks wrote in October: “Even if your heroic exploits prove to be more uncomfortable or painful than you expected, that, too, is part of your journey.” https://theatln.tc/4emNqMiI

In 2017, a scholar in Australia proposed a provocative hypothesis: Materially comfortably humans, the researcher proposed, are still drawn to difficult, even dangerous tasks. Why? Because “the universe is at once life-giving and deadly,” and therefore, from the outset, “humans needed to embrace risk to flourish,” Brooks explains. This characteristic has also been reinforced by culture. In 1949, for example, Joseph Campbell laid out the structure of the “monomyth.” In these narratives, Brooks writes, the “hero’s journey” begins “with a call to adventure, proceeds through a series of difficult trials and dangerous obstacles, and finally ends in triumph.”

Framing one’s life as a quest can lead to positive transformation, Brooks writes. These kinds of challenging adventures don’t necessarily need to be physical in nature to be beneficial; they can also be mental. For instance, one way to harness the power of the hero’s journey is by using the narrative as a way to reframe your difficulties. “This can be especially powerful if you have recently endured an event or hardship from which you’re still struggling to recover,” Brooks writes. By recasting your hardships, he writes, “you can embark on the second stage of your journey: learning to overcome emotional obstacles and getting stronger through your pain.”

Another way to channel the hero’s-journey narrative, especially “if your life simply feels dull and gray, is to go find a challenge that is worthwhile, hard, maybe even scary,” Brooks continues. This could include announcing your intention to start a job search, going back to school, or signing up for a half-marathon. “Your adventure should have a goal, it is true, but it is called a hero’s journey for a reason,” Brooks writes. “Happiness comes not from the blip that is a moment of victory but from the long arc of living, learning, and loving.”

It’s been an incredibly busy time here at Gravity HQ with school camps hosting Springfield convent this week, Bishops as well as Herschel over the next 10 days as well as a multitude of our Micro adventures around Cape Town. Our incredible team is going all out to offer the best outdoor experience to all our clients into 2025! Hats off to all these hard working crew!

Every year for the last 12 years we have been involve in community projects on Princess 🫅 Vlei. The aim is to educate students from less fortunate backgrounds on the importance of waterways, wilderness areas and pollution. Of course there is no reason why we can’t have a few smiles on the way! Just look at how these students are just loving the opportunity and experiencing something new and just enjoying themselves away from the pressures of surviving and striving in the hostile Cape Flats and surrounds.

Great to host Mal Kamper TV on one of our Orange River offerings, Thunder Alley an hour from Kimberly. This section of the Orange River is great for families, only 7hrs from JHB and closer to Durban than the Gorge. With legendary rapids like Hubbly bubbly and Hells gate , this section has excitement too. Big campsites , big sky’s - maybe it should be your next family holiday!

It’s mobi kayak season as we head into the warmer months to December 😎. Why Mobi kayak you may ask ? Well because we are mobile and run from 4 different location in Cape Town. Firstly the Cape Peninsula with our Hout Bay explorer trip where we teamed up with our friends from who bring exceptional knowledge of the area and the history, then we have our Penguin 🐧 trail which is very popular for exploring the white beaches of Simon’s Town and the marine life who call this home, and then our Table Bay Dolphin 🐬 trail which is a true highlight for visiting tourists.
