We are looking for a tax assistant in our accounting practice

This is NOT a bookkeeping post.

The job requires high level liaison with SARS on a range of issues for both corporate and individual clients.

It will include preparing and lodging offers of compromise and requests for penalties waiver.

There are no office hours and we have no central office – our staff work from their own home offices

There is no fixed monthly salary – all work is on an hourly rate basis, the rate to be negotiated upfront

The job will be ideally suited for someone who has worked in the tax department of a medium sized auditing/accounting firm.

Fasttrac is a well established accounting and tax practice seeking to collaborate with bookkeepers who may require CA assistance on an ad hoc basis
This may include signing off on financial statements which the bookkeeper is not empowered to do so.
This has the advantage of the bookkeeper being able to take on additional clients which might ordinarily be out of their normal purview.
For example, perhaps they have been unable to take on Pty Ltd clients for lack of being able to offer the full package.
A collaboration with Fasttrac will enable them to offer the full package to prospective clients whilst collaborating with us on the statutory and tax aspects.
We have no desire to poach the bookkeeping from anyone, our target is the higher tax, consulting and statutory work which the bookkeeper may be unable to do

Many of you will recall the chaos that ensued following the promulgation of the Promotion of Access to Information Act (PAIA), Act 2 of 2000.
Those of us in business at the time were scrambling to get our information manuals together and lodged with the Human Rights Commission (HRC) before the expiry of the deadline.
At the time we assisted many of our clients with the completion of these manuals.
As is usual in such circumstances, many professionals were standing by to fleece people of their hard-earned cash by charging exorbitant amounts for what was essentially a cut and paste exercise.
Once the deadline had passed, we breathed a collective sigh of relief and filed these manuals away, never to be looked at again. I’m prepared to bet that most of you wouldn’t be able to find these now, if you were requested to produce it.
That’s all about to change. Unless you’ve been living on the moon for the past couple of years, you will no doubt have heard of the Protection of Personal Information Act (POPI). Besides the many provisions of the POPI Act, which I will discuss below, this Act has also resurrected the need for the manual required in terms of PAIA (see above).
So if you don’t have a PAIA manual, you need to get one.
And, sadly, if you run more than one company and you have a trust, each entity requires its own manual. Even if you are a sole trader, you need to have this manual.
The deadline for this has been extended to 30 June 2021 to coincide with the implementation of the requirements of the POPI Act.
Before discussing these requirements, we have seen quotes from some professional service providers ranging up to R60 000 to assist their clients with the implementation of this Act. We urge you to proceed with caution so that you don’t get overcharged. Don’t succumb to scare tactics applied by some service providers. Everyone is struggling for cash at the moment and you don’t want to be overpaying.
Once again, every entity (company, CC, trust, NPO, sole proprietor etc) needs to be POPI compliant. The penalties for non-compliance are up to R10m and 10 years imprisonment.
Among the aspects you will need to have in place by the end of June are, updating your PAIA manual (or creating one, if you don’t already have one); nominating an Information Officer and registering that person’s details with the HRC and finalising your combined PAIA and POPI manual.
We can provide this service for R1750 plus vat. For people with more than one entity we can negotiate a bulk amount at a figure lower than a multiple of R1750.
