HerdTracker is a web-app which plots the precise location of the great wildebeest migration in real time to a Google map and in a Twitter-style timeline. HerdTracker is publicly accessible from any web browser - desktop, mobile or tablet. The precise location of the migratory herds is sourced weekly from four different trusted sources: pilots who fly over the Serengeti, safari guides on the ground

, Tanzania National Parks Authority rangers and lodges in the Masai Mara in Kenya. These trusty sources also send us exclusive images and videos of the wildebeest migration to back-up their report.

This herd was sighted around Ikorongo Game Reserve, which is located in the Serengeti ecosystem adjacent to Serengeti National Park.

This reserve can serve as a corridor for migrating wildebeest as they move towards the Masai Mara in Kenya. The wildebeest move through here, as it can sometimes be too dry for them if they stay too long.

Central Seronera is easily accessible by road and air, with Seronera Airstrip serving as a convenient entry point for safari-goers. This area is also known for its rich wildlife biodiversity, such as large populations of lions, leopards, cheetahs, zebras, and elephants, which can be seen in addition to the wildebeest herds.

This herd was sighted near Nyaruboro Hill in central Serengeti.

It looks like most of the wildebeest herds are in central Serengeti again and should start to move west. This is a bit late on their usual route as they chased the rains east.

This herd was spotted near Simba Kopjes at Naabi Hill.

This sighting follows the trend of wildebeest herds moving east as they follow the recent heavy rains. These wildebeests looked to be spreading even further east towards Barafu and Namiri Plains Camp. This detour might delay their arrival in Grumeti and the Mara River!

This wildebeest herd was spotted north of Gol Kopjes in the Serengeti National Park.

The eastern region of Serengeti National Park saw some heavy showers, which led to lush vegetation for the migrating wildebeest herds. These rains caused the wildebeest herd to move from the south to the east instead of the west, as in previous years!

A large herd of wildebeest was spotted moving through the Moru region of Serengeti National Park.

Rain plays a huge role in wildebeest movement patterns, as heavy rainfall promises lush vegetation. The wildebeest herd, therefore, depends on consistent rain in the Serengeti and Mara to complete its migration journey.

Watch how this baby zebra steals the spotlight from the wildebeest herd while they graze in the background.

Wildebeest and zebra herds often travel together, as wildebeest have a great sense of hearing, and zebras have amazing eyesight, which makes them strong allies as they face many predators on their journeys.

These zebras and wildebeest were sighted in Moru, near the Kopjes in Serengeti National Park.

A massive herd of wildebeest and zebras was spotted in the central area of Serengeti National Park.

A group of people experienced this magical scene while on their safari. Wildebeest and zebras are herbivores and can be docile around humans unless provoked or if it is calving season, as they can be quite protective of their young.

Do not be afraid to see The Great Migration yourself one day, as it is truly a must-see in person!

This herd was spotted moving near Ndutu in Serengeti National Park.

The great migration usually comes to the Ndutu area around late December and can stay here until April!

They come to this region to give birth to their calves, as the grass in Ndutu is rich in nutrients for these growing wildebeest. The short grass in this region also allows adult wildebeest to spot predators easily.

This stunning video was taken on the 9th of March 2024.
