SPOTLIGHT ON: SWAKOPMUND MUNICIPAL REST CAMP
For travelers seeking comfortable, value-for-money self-catering accommodation in Swakopmund, the Municipal Rest Camp is an ideal solution. The camp is in close proximity to the beach, shops, banks and petrol stations. Nevertheless, Swakopmund is a relaxed and quiet town - perfect for those who need to break out of the rat race. Cross the lattice bridge over a fishpond and waterfall and come find some serenity at the Swakopmund Municipal Rest Camp.
Built under the old South West African administration to cater for fishermen and tourists who used to visit Swakopmund during the festive season, it started out as a public camping ground in the 1940s. The first 12 tents were erected to cater for holiday goers in 1940. In 1955 the first 26 holiday bungalows were erected, to cater for those who needed to have a bit more of a comfortable stay.
Guests are accommodated in Fisherman’s Units (two bedrooms), A-shaped bungalows (sleeps up to 6 people) and VIP bungalows (four bedrooms) to accommodate families or groups of various sizes. All units are en-suite and self-catering and are equipped with a safe and telephone. The VIP bungalows provide kitchenware and has a lounge and laundry facility, a lock-up garage and veranda with braai facilities. The A-frame chalets and Fisherman’s Units do not have kitchenware. In total there are 185 bungalows.
The Municipal Rest Camp has a restaurant, but guests can have their food delivered at their bungalow. For the more business minded, the rest camp has a conference centre.

Location: Swakopmund Municipal Rest Camp is located on the corner of Hendrik Witbooi and Swakop Street. Walvis Bay is 34km to the south and Henties Bay 71km to the north. Nearby lodges and hotels include the Alte Brücke, The Beach Hotel and The Stiltz (less than 1km away) and the Swakopmund Hotel and Entertainment Center (less than 2km away). The Cape Cross Lodge is 126km to the north.
