Sitting around the campfire at night, surrounded by the sounds of the wild, is one of the best parts of an overland adventure. And if you listen closely, you might hear the unmistakable howls of the side striped jackal —a call that’s both haunting and fascinating.

Jackals use their eerie howls to communicate with family members, often receiving an instant reply. But they’re also known as the ultimate opportunists, following larger predators like lions, leopards, hyenas, and cheetahs, hoping to steal a bite from their hard-earned kills. Even though they’re much smaller, they’ll always try their luck!

Meet the Yellow-Billed Stork – a master of the snap-bill reflex! These skilled fishers wade through the water with their bills open, waiting for the perfect moment. The second they touch prey—snap!—their bill shuts in a flash, and down goes the catch. 🐟

Males and females look similar, but males have a longer, heavier bill. They generally weigh between 1.9kg and 2.3kg.

“The Okavango Delta and our stay at River Khwai Community Safari camp were the highlights of the trip! Rati, our driver, was incredible, and we had amazing sightings, including baby lions, a hunting leopard, and painted dogs (my favorite!). The accommodation, staff, and food were excellent.
