Nomad’s story began over 25 years ago when Alex Rutherford, founder and owner of Nomad, was fortunate enough to have conducted a trans-Africa expedition lasting almost a year. On that journey he encountered numerous companies offering trips to Africa. A void was noticed between strictly budget tours and the more upmarket operations. It was on that trip that the founding principle of Nomad was form

ed: Do it better and do it for less. In those days we had one truck, 2 employees and one departure a month. Over the years we’ve grown to a fleet of around 40 vehicles, 130 staff and 40 scheduled departures a month all over Africa. Our success rests on consistently maintaining high standards in all aspects of our operation, while still retaining the magic and passion that saw us grow so successfully. We have not forgotten the lessons learned in the early days. Still wholly independent, we remain owner-managed, ensuring passionate attention to quality tours every single day.

Gorilla Experience - Bwindi National Park, Uganda

An incredible gorilla experience in Bwindi National Park, Uganda* 🎥 @mblair721 #OnTourThursday *eco-tourism is pivotal in maintaining protected areas for gorillas to thrive. Without the draw of gorilla trekking, the fate of these gorillas would likely be sealed by poachers. The management of these protective parks has been meticulous, especially in terms of facilitating interactions between tourists and the gorillas. For instance, the Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is home to 18 habituated gorilla families. Each family is assigned a maximum of 8 visitors daily, and each visit lasts no longer than an hour. This structured approach ensures minimal disturbance to the gorillas' lifestyle while encouraging a responsible form of tourism. The economic dimension of this operation is crucial too. The revenue from permits serves as a consistent income source for park rangers, enabling them to maintain the Bwindi Forest and shield the gorilla families from various threats. This symbiotic relationship between eco-tourism and conservation efforts ensures not only the safety of the gorillas but also the preservation of the Bwindi Forest.
