My main meal for multi-day hikes means I don't need to carry pots for cooking. The empty packet can also be cleaned and utilized as a water container.

I have just returned from three successful hikes in the ever challenging Fish River Canyon.

After a few disastrous dinner-timed sandstorms in the canyon last season, I decided to put my cullinary skills aside and go with a 100% Forever Fresh dinner-time plan.

Every item in my backpack is carefully weighed and, in another dry season where extra water has to be carried, I have managed to shed 1,5kg in overall weight. The weight saving comes from the lighter food packs and the pot & pan set that is no longer needed. I now only carry a small kettle for boiling.

This was by far the most impressive sunset I've ever seen. The last 30 minutes produced a dazzling display of yellow and orange and eventually blood red as the sun finally disappeared for the day.

Without knocking any other brands, I’ve seen and tried the difference between dehydrated meals and freeze dried which is why I am more than happy to be affiliated with Forever Fresh.

Preparation for freeze dried is simple: Cut the packet, add water, stir, zip closed and wait a few minutes – ready to eat! Rehydration times are different from product to product but 10 minutes is probably all you need.
De-hydrated meals you have to empty the contents into a pot, add water and wait for contents to hydrate. You then have to cook for a few minutes whilst stirring and then allow to stand for a further few minutes. The whole process probably takes about 30mins.

It was a hot day but a thin layer of cloud and a cool breeze occasionally made the hike even more pleasant 😎

This cool nature reserve has 13 well-marked hiking trails. Only two of them go over 3 kilometres, though. To make it interesting, I decided to mix and match some of these trails. I took bits from five of them: Caracal, Duiker, Ukhetshe, Tortoise, and Duiker.

The hike offers awesome views on both sides. You've got the whole Table Bay view with Lion's Head and Table Mountain on one side, and on the flip side, you can check out Bellville and Durbanville. It's so close to Cape Town International Airport that you feel like you could almost touch the planes coming in.

The Duiker Trail is a real highlight. It's a loop around a dam with two cool tunnels to walk through, and it's all lush and green. A bit of an adventure with some beautiful scenery thrown in.

I'll be guiding a group of fit pensioners from France mid November so did a good recce yesterday to make sure non of the paths had washed away in the recent storm.
Clockwise direction, first stop the beacon and 1734 VOC Signal Gun on top of Paarl Rock. It's an easy 350m there and back from the trail.
Next stop was top of Bretagne Rock. It's a more challenging climb with a sturdy chain for support. I wouldn't advise doing this in the wet. It's just over 350m up and took 7min to summit. The view at the top is breathing and climbing up is worth the effort.
The age of the 3 granite rocks are estimated to be about 500 million years.
From there onwards it is pretty flat and downhill all the way around Nantes Dam back to where I started at Meulwater Botanical Garden.
