SAPOA Convention 2024 Recap

From September 3-5, 2024, the SAPOA - South African Property Owners Association brought together key players in South Africa’s real estate sector to discuss industry resilience. As the representative body for approximately 90% of South Africa’s commercial and industrial real estate, SAPOA plays a crucial role in shaping the sector, which is a key driver of economic growth, job creation, and infrastructure development.

A key highlight for Wesgro was participating in a panel discussion on the state of South African municipalities, focusing on their impact on service delivery and investment. The Auditor General's office provided valuable data that set the tone for an in-depth conversation. The convention also explored emerging trends, economic forecasts, and innovative financing solutions.

Cape Town Deputy Mayor Eddie Andrews shared valuable insights on precinct management, and Keillen Ndlovu moderated an engaging session on financing strategies. The event concluded with a Dinner and Awards Evening, celebrating excellence in the property sector.

Wesgro is ramping up its efforts to unlock export opportunities in key markets, with a focus on Asia, a crucial region for South Africa's trade-induced industrialisation strategy. Recently, Wesgro’s Middle East & Asia desk participated in Anuga Select India in Mumbai, which drew 30,000 registered buyers. The team was pleased to reconnect with the Indian market post-COVID, receiving strong interest from key buyers.

As a major international trade hub, Mumbai offered our exporters a chance to expand their global presence and forge valuable connections. Anuga Select India is one of the largest gatherings of Food and Beverage (F&B) professionals, attracting chefs, Hotel, Restaurant, and Café/Catering (HoReCa) experts, manufacturers, and policymakers. It provides an ideal platform for networking and collaboration. Wesgro proudly showcased exhibitors from the Western Cape, including Benjamin Commodities, Wine Way, Cape Rooibos, Arid Wines Stellenbosch and Triple 3 Distillery.

Over the past six years, the Western Cape has been South Africa's leading province for primary agricultural exports to India, contributing 68.73% of these exports in 2023. From 2021 to 2023, the province consistently ranked among the top three for food, beverage, and to***co (FBT) exports to India, making up 3.42% of South Africa's total FBT exports to the Asian country in 2023. Overall, the Western Cape led South Africa in combined primary agricultural and FBT exports to India in four of the six years from 2018 to 2023.

Every year, the World Economic Forum asks global leaders to identify the biggest risks for the next decade. Since 2012, water crises have consistently ranked among the top threats, both in likelihood and impact.

As climate change intensifies, water resilience is becoming a priority for CEOs and public sector leaders globally. Water resilience involves having systems—such as ecosystems, infrastructure, and communities—that can withstand, adapt to, and recover from challenges like droughts, floods, contamination, and climate change. Given that many industries, especially agriculture, heavily depend on water, improving water resilience is vital for economic growth and food security.

For businesses, a reliable water supply is critical for operations and national resilience. By investing in water-efficient technologies, engaging in stewardship initiatives, supporting infrastructure development, and adopting global best practices, South African companies can help secure our water future. We must act now and not wait for a crisis to force our hand.
For more insights, read the full opinion piece on our website by our CEO, Wrenelle Stander, as published by News24.com: https://www.news24.com/fin24/climate_future/news/wrenelle-stander-investing-in-water-resilience-now-is-crucial-for-growth-and-economic-stability-20240827

As CEOs and policymakers focus on the growing water crisis, proactive steps in water management will safeguard both economic stability and social equity, writes Wrenelle Stander.

Minister Maynier praised the development, stating: "It's encouraging to see donors, non-profit organisations, and the private sector investing in new schools to create additional school places," particularly in light of the current school admissions challenges in the region.

To drive economic growth, South Africa needs every sector to perform at its best.

Recently, the space economy has expanded beyond traditional superpowers, with many countries seeing strong returns on their space investments. South Africa, with its strategic southern hemisphere location, has a unique advantage for space observation, satellite tracking, and launching.

The country's clear skies make it ideal for astronomical and radio astronomy research, supported by emerging tech hubs, especially in the Western Cape. However, to unlock this potential, South Africa needs increased strategic investment, robust public-private partnerships, international cooperation, and targeted educational support to develop a skilled workforce.

06/08/2024

As a proud supporter of the French Institute of South Africa (IFAS), Wesgro recently hosted the "New Shared Stories" delegation in Cape Town, featuring 12 creatives from France, Reunion Island, and Mauritius.

Leveraging strong connections with the French film industry, Wesgro facilitated 148 one-on-one meetings between these delegates and Western Cape film exporters in the creative services sector. The Industrial Development Corporation (IDC) and the National Film and Video Foundation (NFVF) also showcased their offerings and support structures to help grow the industry.

The film industry, a major tourist attraction, is a critical component of the Western Cape economy and a cornerstone of South Africa's Cultural and Creative Industries. In 2020, these industries accounted for 3% of South Africa's GDP, contributing R161 billion. The audio-visual segment alone contributed 30% of this total, amounting to R48.4 billion. When factoring in its influence on related sectors such as hospitality, logistics, tourism, and transport, the economic impact is even more substantial.

We encourage all Western Cape companies to participate in future initiatives by registering on the Cape Trade Portal at www.capetradeportal.com.
