Last nights blood moon from Cape Town, South Africa. So awesome to get to see this breathtaking total lunar eclipse which was the longest celestial event of the century.

A stray Southern Elephant Seal lies on the washed up bed of kelp at Rooiels in the Western Cape. This amazing mammal is usually found in the sub-Antarctic regions and the largest mammal which is not a cetaceans, bulls reaching weights between 2000-4000 kg’s. They are also the deepest diving air breathing non-cetaceans diving depths over 1000m for up to 20 minutes to feed on squid. Deepest depth recorded are over 2000m. Such an incredible mammal.

Looks at this beautiful Southern Elephant Seal that has arrived on our southern cape shores on the beach at Rooiels. A first for me to see. We think he may have gotten lost after the major storms recently experienced and with two Orca’s in the bay he might be taking some time out of the water - just a theory.

Skeleton’s Waterfall - Kirstenbosch Gardens. We are truly very lucky to be able to say this waterfall lies on our doorsteps in Cape Towns southern suburbs. It’s a wonderful sight watching this waterfall and forest bounce to life after the recent rains. This is a colour pic of my previous B&W pic and slightly different composition.

The beauty of Newlands Forest on the eastern side of Cape Town’s Table Mountain. The streams are in full force after the large storms we have recently experienced. A huge relief after our recent drought.

Mystical and ancient Sand Forests of Phinda Nature Reserve. This Torchwood tree stands tall forming part of the canopy of this ancient forest which has taken decades to grow and form a part of this rare semi-deciduous forest which grows over the coastal sand dunes of Northern Kwa-Zulu Natal. I have added a bit of movement in this exposure to try create some mood and to emphasize the height of these trees.

The endemic Cape Sugarbird sits on an endemic Black-bearded Protea one of the Sugarbush species found in the Cape of Good Hope Nature Reserve.

Amaryllis wonderland at Cape of Good Hope Nature Reserve. I was very happy to get to see this rare display of flowering fields of the critically endangered Hessea Cinnamomea. These bulbous plants require fire in order for them to flower. The big fires that roared through the Southern Cape last summer have created a display of flowers which last displayed over 28 years ago. Who knows when the next time we will be able to witness this again?

Hessea Cinnamomea (Amaryllis) flowering in The Cape of Good Hope Nature Reserve. Listed on the SANBI Red List as an endangered species. A very rare sighting and only flowering as a result of the massive fires that swept through the Cape peninsula last summer which they are dependent on.

Cape Mountain Zebra (Equus Zebra Zebra) at Cape Point Nature Reserve - this montane Zebra was once thought to be almost extinct but now after some serious conservation to protect them they are starting to recover and are now classified as vulnerable.

Silent Night - A watchful camouflaged female Leopard lies in the thick Bush whilst her 2 young cubs stay hidden in a den nearby.

Panthera Pardus Pardus - African Leopard Portrait. This young female gracefully passes us whilst on her morning scent marking patrol . The unusually rain in the night must have washed away some of her territorial scent markings, with 2 young cubs in the den it deemed necessary to re-mark the territorial boundaries of her home range. .nikki

Hipsters at Phinda Game Reserve. I have been wanting to photograph Crested Guineafowl for sometime now and I finally managed to find them around Mountain Lodge . as you mentioned best opportunity to photograph them is when they come into the lodge, they were very tame and approachable allowing me some great photographic opportunities. This is one of my favorites.

Contrasts and patterns in the Namib Sand Dunes at Sossusvlei. This is the oldest desert on the planet with some of highest dunes. This arid and rough terrain is a photographers play ground with so many lines, colours and textures.
