Wildlife conservation in Africa used to be a simple affair: fence off an area of land, keep the locals out, and charge foreign visitors to come and see the animals. But excluding local communities from their natural equity tends to increase the practises that work against conservation…

“I recently took a trip to Zimbabwe to visit the Hwange, the largest reserve in the country, before stopping off at Matopos Hills and ending in Victoria Falls. Even allowing for the current drought, I had fantastic game viewing, including the sight of literally thousands of elephants.”

A special announcement on :

welcomed the Chewore Conservation Trust (CCT) to the African Parks Incubation Programme!

Together with the Zimbabwean Government, CCT is taking bold steps to manage Chewore South Safari Area — a 2,020 km² gem within the Mid-Lower Zambezi.

Chewore Conservation Trust, founded as the pilot project of the AWE for Nature Foundation, hopes to protect and rehabilitate the area’s wildlife, support those living in and around Chewore South to become drivers of sustainable local green economies, and to bring back species that traditionally roamed these landscapes.

African Parks developed the Incubation Programme with a vision to partner with organisations that share an ambition to promote effectively managed protected areas through formalised agreements and to support these partners in more efficiently reaching their conservation objectives.

Through this incubation partnership, CCT will receive support ranging from the development of management agreements with government partners to business structures, governance disciplines, and protected area management practices.

This addition brings the number to seven protected areas now under the Incubation Programme, covering over four million hectares across Africa.

This crazy sequence of photos showing a dramatic standoff between a mother black-backed jackal and a snouted cobra took place late last week at one of the two jackal dens we are monitoring at the moment at .

It ended with the jackal relieved to ‘let’ the cobra move on and leave her and her 4 pups in peace.

Nothing illustrates biodiversity and communal bliss more than sociable weaver colonies. These colossal thatch-like canopies, supported by large camel thorn and shepherd’s trees across Tswalu Kalahari Reserve, have immense value as biodiversity hotspots, influencing the ecosystem and benefiting other animals.

Community nests are maintained by generations of sociable weavers and provide shelter and sustenance to multiple species of birds, mammals, reptiles and insects.

Time spent below one of these colonies provides a fascinating glimpse into a complex web of life and will evoke admiration for the equally iconic trees that support them.
