A Day in the Life of a Kufadza Female Scout

The day begins with an early morning wake-up call followed by a hearty breakfast. The scouts then tackle rigorous training and exercises at the obstacle course to hone their skills, and, after a detailed briefing at the base, they gather their equipment, rations, and military assault rifles for protection.

Once transported to their deployment area, they embark on extensive patrols, often covering over 10 miles on foot to find snares, track poachers, and spot any signs of illegal behavior. Their day wraps up with a debrief and reflection on their crucial work.

With the support of African Bush Camps Foundation, the Kufadza female scouts are dedicated to protecting, conserving, and inspiring.

The Kufadza Female Scouts: Protect, Conserve, Inspire.

African Bush Camps Foundation is delighted to announce our partnership with Conservation Lower Zambezi to support the Kufadza female scouts: Zambia’s first all-women scout team.

Kufadza means ‘to inspire’ in the local Goba language. These remarkable women patrol and safeguard the Lower Zambezi National Park and the surrounding Chiawa Management Areas, diligently seeking out poachers, snares, and other signs of illegal activity. They also work closely with local communities to emphasize the importance of conservation while addressing the difficulties that wildlife poses for those living near or within unfenced parks.

Guide Godwin shares his incredible story of rescuing a baby buffalo.

“While transferring guests to Dandawa airstrip, we heard buffalo bellows nearby. Upon investigation, we found a herd of about 150 buffalo retreating, leaving behind a lone female who kept charging my vehicle.

We soon discovered that she was protecting her calf, who was stuck in the mud of a pan. I radioed Reggie, and, considering this was outside of the National Park, we made the decision to assist. I drove the mother away with our vehicle, and when she was a safe distance, Reggie and I began to pull the calf from the mud.

Once free, the calf followed us out of the pan. We got back into our vehicle and saw that the mother had returned with a sub-adult. They were later happily reunited.”

"Zimbabwe and Zambia have officially declared states of emergency as a severe drought takes a stronger hold on the region.” - European Union.

Francois Barnard, our Chief Conservation Officer, and Koinonia Baloyi, our Foundation’s
Communications & Fundraising Officer, will run 21 KM in Victoria Falls on July 7th. In doing so, they aim to raise $21,000 for our communities and National Parks to help combat the drought.

The funds raised will go towards drilling, installing, and renovating the boreholes at our
community gardens. They will also support our initiatives in the National Parks to enhance the water supply at wildlife watering holes.

World Environment Day is a powerful reminder to take action to protect our planet. In honor
of this, our Foundation is hosting a Green Day Initiative in Maunga Village on the 19th of
June.

The aim of this Initiative is twofold:
• To educate and empower the community on important conservation matters such as
co-existing with wildlife, reducing litter, and recycling.
• To restore the landscape around Maunga Village by planting 200 trees in one day.

Our Foundation sponsored the construction of two houses to serve as teacher accommodation at Maunga Primary School in Zambia. The teachers, who have been residing in an unfinished classroom block for the past 20 months, are delighted to move into their new homes.

By providing comfortable and safe accommodation, this development ensures that the students of Maunga Primary School will have happy and motivated teachers committed to remaining with the school.

Part of our commitment to this conservation, made possible by our Foundation, involves the employment of two Lion Guardians in the nearby village of Mola. These Guardians alert the village of the presence of lions in the area using a vuvuzela – a type of horn that makes a loud, monotonous sound – ensuring that the villagers can safely herd all livestock into protective bomas.

The Lion Guardians also facilitate conversations with the community on conservation, why biodiversity is critical for socio-economic growth, and how to peacefully co-exist with the surrounding wildlife.

Our Women Empowerment Safari is a profound nine-night journey through our heartlands. Beginning in Botswana at Linyanti Bush Camp, you’ll be immersed in our female guide training, seeing first-hand how we are changing the face of the safari industry. Next, you’ll transfer to Thorntree River Lodge, just upstream from the thundering Victoria Falls, where you’ll tour the women-run Maunga Clinic and Maternity Ward and learn the importance of health equity. Your journey ends at Somalisa Expeditions in Zimbabwe’s Hwange National Park. You’ll visit the Dete community where we support and uplift women through entrepreneurship and the Mambanje Garden initiative.

As part of this booking, we’ll donate USD 5,000 to the African Bush Camps Foundation to fund the tuition, training, and licensing of one female guide to become a certified and licensed safari guide. We aim to develop 25 female guides by 2025 and inspire countless others.

African Bush Camps is a small and independently owned African-based company run by one of Africa’s top Safari guides Beks Ndlovu and his wife Sophia. The company was formed as a result of the growth of Beks Safaris, where Beks used his natural talents and outstanding guiding skills to promote the concept of privately guided safaris through remote parts of Africa.
