Time for some spring "cleaning".

Ahead of our upcoming Spring and Summer South African tour season, we have partnered with the Rooi Els Conservancy to replace the existing Cape Rockjumper signage. The effect of five years of African summers and Cape winters was obvious on some of the old signs. Photos are courtesy of Gavin Lundie - Rooi Els Conservancy.

Details of our ever-popular Cape Rockjumper day trips can be found at: https://birdingafrica.com/blog/tour/cape-town-kogelberg-day-trip/

Our tour leaders love a good twitch.

Several members of our team rushed to see a recently reported Whinchat in Cape Town. This species is a major Southern African rarity, with this being only the 30th record for the region.

Whinchats overwinter in Sub-Saharan Africa as far south as Zambia, and normally migrate back north to their European breeding grounds for the northern summer. To reach Cape Town this bird flew south instead of north. This an example of reverse migration, where a bird migrates in the opposite direction typical of their species.

This photo was taken by Principal Tour leader Tertius Gous. To learn more about Tertius and his upcoming tours please visit: https://birdingafrica.com/blog/personnel/tertius-gous/

The Cinnamon-breasted Warbler (Euryptila subcinnamomea) is a true skulker.

A combination of small size and secretive habits makes this a challenging species to see, let alone photograph.

Tour leader Vincent Ward recently led two trips into the arid Tankwa Karoo where he successfully showed his guests this very-sought after Southern African endemic.

If you would like to focus on this, and other Karoo specials, consider booking a personalised overnight trip: https://birdingafrica.com/blog/tour/cape-town-tankwa-overnight/

This species is also a target on our upcoming Cape Endemics: https://birdingafrica.com/blog/tour/south-africa-cape-endemics-ba2480/

and Ultimate Endemics tours: https://birdingafrica.com/blog/tour/south-africa-ultimate-endemics-ba2467/

Nyungwe Forest in Rwanda is one of the largest high altitude montane forest in Africa and is home to a diverse range of Albertine Rift endemics as well as 13 primate species. It is the only accessible place to find the unusual Red-collared Mountain Babbler which travels around in small parties in the canopy.
