🚙 AWD Tours SA – Die Hel & Stars Tour | Final Day 🌄

Our last day began with plans to tackle the Ouberg Pass (4x4) on our journey home. However, recent heavy rains had left the route unpredictable, and local police advised against it. With safety always a priority, we adjusted our course after a hearty breakfast, the convoy set off towards Tankwa Padstal and Katbakkies Pass instead.

Meanwhile, the Evoque, still running on its emergency spare, had to take the long tarred route home.

Not long after leaving the last stretch of tar, one of our group members started feeling unwell. With a full afternoon of commitments waiting at home, I made the decision to split the group once more. Together with the unwell Jimny driver, I took the more direct gravel road past Inverdoorn to Ceres, while the rest of the group continued along the planned route.

As the journey came to an end, we looked back on an adventure filled with breathtaking scenery, unexpected challenges, and unforgettable connections. The Karoo, lush and green from the rains, gave us spectacular views, making every detour and change of plans worthwhile.

🌌 AWD Tours SA – Die Hel & Stars Tour | Day 3 🚙

Our journey to Sutherland started with a challenge. As we tackled the 600m climb out of Die Hel, one of our group radioed in tyre damage. The culprit? A deep sidewall cut on the Range Rover Evoque’s rear tyre, beyond repair. With only a small “marie biscuit” spare available, we had no choice but to take the journey slow and steady to avoid further complications.

Being a Sunday, finding a replacement 20-inch tyre in Prins Albert was out of the question. So, we made the call to split the group I accompanied the Evoque via tar roads, while one of our experienced members led the rest along the planned gravel route through Merweville and over the Rammelkop Pass to Sutherland.

Despite the unexpected detour, the group reunited in Sutherland and wasted no time immersing ourselves in the magic of the night sky. We attended the 3D Star Show at the Sutherland Planetarium, a mesmerizing introduction to the wonders above.

Later, after checking into our charming accommodation at “Die Heks se Huis,” we returned to the Planetarium for an unforgettable Stargazing Show.

Under the crisp, clear skies of South Africa’s star-gazing capital, the challenges of the day melted away, replaced by the quiet awe of the universe stretching endlessly above us.

🚙 AWD Tours SA – Die Hel & Stars Tour | Day 2 🌄

The journey continued as we made our way through the rugged beauty of Coetzees Poort, heading toward the legendary Swartberg Pass. Just beyond the summit, known as “Die Top,” we veered off onto a road that few have the privilege to travel the winding 37km route into Gamkaskloof, famously known as “Die Hel.”

For generations, this isolated valley was only accessible by footpaths, keeping its small community tucked away from the outside world.

However, when a road was built in the early 1960s, it led to the gradual dispersal of the families who once called this place home. Today, only one family remains keeping the spirit of Die Hel alive through their farm, small shop, restaurant and cozy accommodation.

We were fortunate enough to stay in their charming chalets, where their warm hospitality and home-cooked meals made us feel like part of the valley’s history. As the sun dipped below the rugged peaks and the stars filled the sky, we couldn’t help but reflect on the deep connection between people, places and the stories that linger long after the engines are turned off.

🚙 AWD Tours SA – Die Hel & Stars Tour | Day 1 ✨

Our adventure began in Heidelberg (WC), where the convoy set off towards the breathtaking Gysmanshoek Pass – an ancient ox wagon route dating back to the 1700s. The rugged beauty of this historic pass set the perfect tone for the journey ahead.

Next stop: the charming town of Van Wyksdorp, where we enjoyed a refreshing break at the delightful "Vanwyksdorp Mall." With spirits high, we pushed onward, tackling the scenic twists and turns of Assegaaibosch Pass and the majestic Rooiberg Pass.

By late afternoon, we arrived in Calitzdorp before heading to our overnight accommodation at Bella De Karoo. A warm welcome from our host, Elmarie, set the scene for an unforgettable evening. As the fire crackled and laughter filled the air, friendships were made, and the excitement for the journey ahead continued to build.

The river stretches out before us, its surface rippling under the sky. There’s a brief moment of hesitation the kind that makes your heart beat a little faster. But turning back was never an option.

With a deep breath and steady hands, we move forward, the water rushing around the wheels, the spray catching the sunlight. Voices crackle over the radio, some offering guidance, others just cheering each other on. And then, just like that, we’re through hearts racing, grins wide, a shared sense of triumph in the air.

At first, we were just a line of AWDs, each driver focused on the trail ahead, navigating the twists, turns and dust that lay before us.

But somewhere along the way maybe at that first tricky incline, or while wading through a river crossing something shifted.

It wasn’t just about the road anymore. It was about the glances in the rearview mirror, making sure the person behind you was still there. It was the laughter echoing over the 2 - way radio, the quiet moments of awe as we took in the untouched beauty around us, the shared triumph of conquering a tough stretch of trail.

By the time we sat down together, dusty and tired, swapping stories over a meal, we weren’t just fellow travellers anymore. We were looking out for each other, celebrating each win—big or small—and knowing, deep down, that these connections would last long after the dust had settled and the engines were switched off.
