Travelling to Botswana with children? Here’s what to consider:
✅ Age matters. Many lodges welcome children over 6 (some 8+), with dedicated guides and child-friendly safaris.
✅ Choose private or flexible-use camps. This allows you to set the pace and tailor activities.
✅ Pack light, plan smart. Bring layers, wide-brim hats, and a good pair of binoculars (they’ll love having their own).
✅ Don’t over-schedule. Build in quiet time for rest, play, and stories under the stars.
✅ Don’t forget to travel with copies of your children’s birth certificates
The key is simple: let the wilderness set the rhythm.

The recently renovated Tented Camp blends effortless style with the thrill of being deeply, beautifully remote in the Greater Kruger National Park of South Africa.
Here, every tented suite opens up to the wilderness of the Timbavati, with no fences between you and the world you came to explore - only soft canvas, starlight, and the stories told by elephants at the water’s edge.
With just nine tents and a focus on intimacy and sustainability, Ngala proves that luxury in the wild doesn’t have to shout—it can be a gentle whisper on the wind.

A flash of turquoise. A ripple in the reeds.
And then it’s gone.
The kingfisher is Botswana’s flying jewel, small, bright, and quick as a whisper. With seven different species found in the region, these birds are often spotted darting low over waterways, or poised on a branch, watching for movement.
Patience rewards you. Sit quietly scanning shrubbery on the water’s edge, and they’ll reveal themselves, not just through a flash of colour, but a dart of lightning fast movement.
The kingfisher reminds us that sometimes, the most fleeting moments are the most unforgettable.

We’re a society that’s desperate for wild and remote open spaces and meaningful interaction with wildlife and people.
The landscape paintings of Bruce Backhouse – previously artist in residence at Tswalu – offer a snapshot of how Tswalu provides that in spades for guests at their three lodges, splendid Kalahari tones, radiant sunsets and night skies and immense, bending horizons. It’s true magic at scale but also at a micro level, close and considered observation of the desert life revealed two wonderful stories for us…

Dreaming of a safari with your children? Botswana might just be the perfect place to start.
Why? Because it’s private, peaceful, and personal.
With low-impact tourism, exclusive concessions, and uncrowded sightings, Botswana offers the increasingly rare gift of space and stillness—ideal for travelling as a family.
No jostling for a view. No rushed experiences. Just you, your guide, and the wild unfolding at your pace.
Botswana is where wonder becomes a shared language. And where your child’s first lion sighting becomes a story you’ll tell for years.

There are few things more heart-melting and fun than watching lion cubs play in the wild.
In Botswana, lionesses don’t have a strict “birthing season,” but the arrival of cubs does often peak during the dry season (May to October), when conditions can be easier with hunting made a little easier for mom.
That’s when you’re most likely to see curious cubs tumbling over each other at dawn, still wobbly but full of wild promise.
Pro tip: If you spot a lioness lingering near thick bush or moving frequently at dusk, there may be cubs nearby. Your guide will know what to look for.

In Botswana, the birds steal the show, provided you know when to be on the lookout. Birding here is fantastic, both for the seasoned twitcher and the novice alike.
Over 580 species have been recorded across the Okavango Delta and Chobe, from the obviously gorgeous Lilac-breasted Roller to the prehistoric-looking Ground Hornbill and some cute little fellas too.
In the quiet moments between dramatic lion sightings and adrenaline-spiking elephant crossings, stopping to look and listen will reveal another world of feathered intrigue that is unfolding in the skies and surrounding bush.

In parts of Botswana lions reign a little differently, but no less effectively.
Here, they’ve adapted to the often waterlogged terrain and shifting prey patterns on the open floodplains by becoming expert swimmers and resilient survivors.
From the vast open spaces of the Savuti Marsh to the channels of the Okavango Delta, Botswana’s lions are always a thrill to watch.

Tswalu Diaries
Each safari writes its own story. Ours unfolded in moments of reflection, unexpected sightings, and the kind of care that’s felt in every detail.
At Tswalu Kalahari Reserve , the Kalahari reveals itself slowly, through the eyes of a meerkat, the flight of a pygmy falcon, or the silence between tracking signs in the sand.
No two journeys are the same.
What will yours look like?

Small, fierce, and full of character.
The Pygmy Falcon is Africa’s smallest bird of prey, and was one of many quiet surprises during our time at . Often overlooked, this tiny raptor is a reminder that the Kalahari doesn’t shout. It whispers… revealing its magic if you know where to look.

Where leopard tracks disappearing into the bush were once the only evidence of this elusive cat, now these same tracks lead to intimate encounters few ever forget.
The Sabi Sand Nature Reserve isn’t just South Africa’s ultimate safari destination—it’s a living story of transformation. From humble beginnings leading safaris in clapped-out farm vehicles to today's world-class lodges delivering the ultimate game viewing experience, from snatched glances of elusive shadows in the early years to present day sightings of relaxed big cats, this wild garden has evolved into a sanctuary of stillness, beauty, and deep connection.
What makes it so special?
Unfenced borders into the Greater Kruger National Park. Lodge-based safari vehicles only. Off-road access where it matters.
Often a tracker-guide tradition that turns every sighting into a shared pursuit.
Luxurious lodges rooted in deep history. Rivers that draw life.
And possibly the best leopard viewing on the continent.
This is safari as it should be: intimate, intentional, unforgettable.

In September 2020 we’ll be setting off on an unforgettable, active adventure exploring remote northern Namibia by Mountain bike. Our five night expedition takes us through the spectacular 450,000 hectare private Palmwag concession in Damaraland. We will spend 3 nights in the wildest of locations, mobile camping under the stars in this extraordinary landscape.
Days are spent on the mountain bike navigating our way through spectacular scenery and past the onlooking denizens of the desert. Distances and time in the saddle is fully adaptable to our guests fitness levels – our support team with vehicles, bike trailers, bike mechanic and full coolerbox are a radio call away.
In the afternoons, after settling into our new camp, we’ll walk into natural springs looking for wildlife and, where possible, track black rhino to view on foot. We may also encounter lion, elephant and hyena amongst other mammals.
The private mobile camp is fully serviced with simple dome tents, bucket showers and an amazing camp crew that prepare delicious, simple meals while making sure that you will enjoy an ice cold beer and a G & T at the end of every day.
For the final two nights we’ll bike into one of Africa’s unique safari camps, Hoanib Skeleton Coast Camp, overlooking the eponymous river valley as it cuts through the surrounding Kaokoveld mountains. We’ll safari drive and walk to explore the geographical highlights of the Skeleton coast and its desert adapted inhabitants including elephant, springbok, oryx, cheetah, giraffe, brown hyena, jackal, leopard and lion.
