JERUSALEM is amazing! But, it can also be overwhelming for a first time visitor. We have compiled our top tips of what you need to know before visiting this special city.

10 THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW:
1. Join a group tour! Wandering around the city is essential, but if you don't have a guide, a lot of it will be meaningless. You will walk past important Christian sites and have no clue what happened there - and with a city chock-full of history, this would be a huge shame!

2. Dress modestly. Most sites and churches require conservative dress (elbows and shoulders covered, knee length shorts or dresses).

3. Check the opening and closing times (if you join a JOY! Tour you don't need to do this as we plan everything for you). Many Christian sites are closed on Sundays, Jewish sites closed on Saturdays and Muslim sites closed on Fridays - so you have to plan your site-seeing well.

4. Expect to walk - ALOT! Most of the Old City can only be accessed by foot and often has cobbled or uneven streets... so start walking now to prepare!

5. Make sure to visit all the Quarters of the Old City (Jewish / Armenian / Muslim and Christian). Each quarter has its own unique charm and there are lots of hidden gems in each. On a JOY! Tour we walk you through these quarters and give some free time for shopping.

6. Bring lots of cash in small notes for shopping in the Shuks. Mahane Yahuda is the downtown food market where you will want to buy lots of delicious delicacies. In the Old City there are hundreds of vendors selling all sorts of wares - but be prepared to BARGAIN! It is essential in the Middle East.

7. Even if you don't like history - schedule time to visit the various museums and soak up the history. Friends of Zion, Kotel Tunnels, Yad Vashem, Israeli Museum are all must sees.

8. Explore the city at night and stay in a hotel that is close by. Cheaper hotels (and tour groups) stay far away from the city, but on our JOY! Tours we always choose superior accommodation that gives you easy access to the city. Whether you explore the trendy Ben Yahuda street for an evening coffee, or walk to the Western Wall for Sabbath prayers (with thousands of Jewish believers) this is a must do!

9. Try local cuisine - but take immodium with just in case! Many travellers get a case of the runs in Israel because they are not used to eating so many fresh veggies, health salads and grains. Israeli food is super healthy and delicious, with veggies served at every meal.

10. Be careful not to get stuck in Jerusalem over the Sabbath (Friday night to Saturday night) when most sites are closed and public transport shuts down. If you are on a JOY! Tour, this is not a problem as we have our own fulltime driver, bus and tour guide and can explore every inch of JLEM... but if you travel alone it can be a nightmare doing anything!
