The Castle of Good Hope, known locally as "The Castle", is strictly speaking not a "castle" at all, but a "fort". The Castle was originally located on the coastline of Table Bay but following land reclamation, the fort is now located well inland.

Built by the Dutch East India Company between 1666 and 1679, the castle replaced an older fort called the Fort de Goede Hoop which was constructed by Jan van Riebeeck upon his arrival at the Cape of Good Hope in 1652, from clay and timber.

Cape Town winters, while providing some awesomely sunny, wind free days, are often a time for indoor activities. A popular spot for young and old alike is the 2 Oceans Aquarium.

Oceans cover 70% of the Earth's surface and hold 97% of the planet's water. The oceans feed us, regulate our climate, absorb approximately one-third of the carbon dioxide we produce, and provide up to 70% of the oxygen we breathe.

The Two Oceans Aquarium was designed using low-tech and energy-efficient systems, and they are constantly finding new ways to reduce consumption and use more renewable energy. Given that our animal life support systems have to run 24/7, 365 days a year, the main energy consumers are the pumps, which pull water from the harbour, then drive it through the filtration process, and ultimately through and between exhibits.

The aquarium has recently been able to install solar panels to reduce reliance on Eskom and fossil fuels. And the drive to being more renewable energy dependant is ongoing. This is a worthwhile operation that deserves your support. And it's a wonderful way to spend a rainy day as well. Here's the video:

At the foot of Signal Hill, on the fringe of the city, Bo-Kaap was formerly known as "The Malay Quarter". It's a vibrant, mostly Muslim neighbourhood, with some excellent family owned restaurants and spice shops. The first and oldest mosque in South Africa, the Auwal Masjid Mosque, stands proudly as a testament to the rich cultural heritage of this diverse community. It's well worth a visit. Exploring Cape Town: Bo- Kaap
The origins of the area known as "Bo Kaap" date back to the 1760s when numerous ‘huurhuisjes’ (rental houses) were built and leased to slaves. While on lease, all the houses had to be white, so when this rule was eventually lifted, and the slaves were allowed to buy the properties, the owners painted all the houses bright colours as an expression of their freedom.
