Capespan Wraps Up a Fantastic Business Bowls League!

Thursday nights in February were well spent as Capespan joined 47 other teams in the Business Bowls League, bringing together businesses for a mix of friendly competition, team spirit, and plenty of socialising. More than just a game, the league was a great way to strengthen relationships, network with other professionals, and enjoy some time together outside the office.

Last night, the top 24 teams played in the final round, and we were proud to be part of it! Throughout the tournament, our team members - Anmari Kriegler, Ansie Auret, Herman Redelinghuys, Christiaan Beukes, Armand Visagie, Cecilia van der Merwe, and Ron van Heerden - took turns representing Capespan on the greens, making every match a fun and memorable experience.

From rolling bowls to sharing meals and stories after each game, this league was all about connection, teamwork, and enjoying the moment. A huge thank you to everyone who participated - we look forward to doing it all again next year!

When Life Gives You Rain… Wait for Your Lemons

Capespan South Africa welcomed the first early-season lemons in Weeks 5 and 6, eager to deliver the freshest, finest fruit to clients worldwide. And then—the rain came!

Lemons are particularly sensitive to oleocellosis (or oleo), a condition that occurs when fruit is picked while moisture levels in the rind are too high. This causes the oil cells to burst, leaving dark marks on the skin. While the fruit inside remains perfectly fine, consumers tend to buy with their eyes, making visual appeal crucial.

To prevent oleo, growers typically wait for warmer, drier conditions before harvesting. However, intermittent rain in South Africa’s northern growing regions has made this challenging, as orchards haven’t had enough time to dry out properly. Rather than compromising quality, Capespan and our supply partners are closely monitoring weather forecasts—and thankfully, sunshine is on the horizon!

Despite the delays, there’s plenty to look forward to. The orchards are thriving, filled with beautiful citrus fruit that’s almost ready for harvest. While we wait, we’re sharing a glimpse of the journey—from the challenges of oleo to the promise beautiful citrus coming soon!

Capespan’s marketing team recently visited key growers in the North, and we can’t wait to see these orchards in full production soon. Stay tuned!

The Royal Gala apple stands out with its striking pink-red striped skin, crisp bite, and naturally sweet flavour. Originally cultivated in New Zealand in the 1930s, this variety is a redder selection of the classic Gala apple. Its name was inspired by Queen Elizabeth II’s visit to New Zealand, where she declared it her favourite apple.

Royal Gala apples are known for their versatility—perfect for fresh consumption due to their balance of sweetness and mild acidity, but also excellent for baking, sauces, and fruit salads. Their firm texture holds up well in pies and compotes, making them a favourite for both consumers and food manufacturers.

Currently, South Africa is in the peak harvesting season for Royal Gala apples, supplying premium quality fruit to markets worldwide. With their high pack-out rates, consistent quality, and long shelf life, they remain a key variety in the global apple trade.

• 2 tablespoons fresh basil, chopped
• 2 tablespoons fresh parsley, chopped
• Salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste
• 2 tablespoons olive oil
• 1/2 cup white wine or chicken broth
• Toothpicks or kitchen twine

Quick Steps:
1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
2. Pound the chicken breasts to an even thickness.

It is distinguished by its large, round berries with a pale green hue and a firm, crisp-juicy texture. The grapes offer a sweet flavour making them a delightful choice for consumers seeking a unique taste experience.

Celebrating Excellence in the Orange River Region 🍇

The farms in the Orange River region have once again shown incredible dedication and teamwork, managing this year’s grape harvest estimates with precision and packing their best quantities and tons ever!

At Capespan, we are incredibly proud of the hardworking teams at Noudonsies, Valam, Oorkant, Norriseep, and Arendsnes.

To honour their outstanding achievements, each farm manager was presented with a personalized, branded bottle of sparkling wine – a unique “trophy” featuring their farm’s name and the tons packed for the season 🏆🍾

The celebration culminated in a memorable night where managers accepted the awards on behalf of their dedicated teams. It was a true reflection of the passion, precision, and commitment that define Capespan.

Here’s to continued success and raising the bar even higher in the seasons to come! 🥂

Red Globe grapes are a variety of large, seeded red grapes known for their firm flesh and sweet, mild flavour. Developed in California in the late 1950s, they thrive in warm climates with long growing seasons, making South Africa ideal for their cultivation - where they are typically harvested from late December to early February.

Fun facts: They are primarily consumed fresh as table grapes but can also be dried for raisins or used in various grape juices. Due to their substantial size, frozen Red Globe grapes can serve as natural ice cubes in beverages.

"We Deliver" is more than just a slogan for Capespan—it’s the cornerstone of our promise to bring premium table grapes to European, UK, and global markets. As non-climacteric fruits, table grapes do not ripen after harvest. This means they must be picked at their peak ripeness and delivered to consumers as swiftly as possible to retain their exceptional quality and flavour. Capespan has embraced this challenge, refining logistics to ensure our grapes arrive fresh and on time, year after year.

Jack's Salute™ is a red seedless table grape variety. It was developed by International Fruit Genetics (IFG), officially designated as IFG Nine and today this variety is owned by Bloom Fresh. It is characterized by naturally large, oval to elongated berries that develop without the need for growth-enhancing treatments. The grapes exhibit a deep red colour, firm to crispy texture, and a sweet, neutral flavour. They form large, naturally loose bunches and are known for high productivity and good storage capabilities.

The table grape variety is named in honour of Jack Pandol, a prominent figure in the California grape industry, who played an instrumental role in the development and commercialization of various grape varieties and contributed significantly to modern grape farming practices. The name pays tribute to his legacy in agriculture, his service in World War II, and his unique tradition of saluting his staff as a gesture of respect and gratitude for their hard work.

In Southern Africa, Jack's Salute™ grapes are typically harvested from mid to late season, which generally falls between January and March. Capespan’s Jack’s Salute™ grapes are grown in Namibia in collaboration with the Namibia Grape Company (NGC).

From Desert Landscapes to Global Markets

The Orange River is often called the "Nile of the South," due to the desert landscape it traverses in its lower regions. The river provides abundant water and fertile soils for table grape farming in a region where rain is scarce. While this region’s hot, dry climate creates production challenges, the lack of humidity decreases the risk of pests and diseases. This combination of alluvial soils and hot, dry weather, makes it ideal for cultivating premium-quality grapes for the global market.

Capable hands and sustainable farming practices turn this arid region into a hub of excellence – as seen here at Capespan’s Arendsnes Farm.
