Red Globe grapes are a variety of large, seeded red grapes known for their firm flesh and sweet, mild flavour. Developed in California in the late 1950s, they thrive in warm climates with long growing seasons, making South Africa ideal for their cultivation - where they are typically harvested from late December to early February.

Fun facts: They are primarily consumed fresh as table grapes but can also be dried for raisins or used in various grape juices. Due to their substantial size, frozen Red Globe grapes can serve as natural ice cubes in beverages.

Capespan’s Blue Hand Initiative: Nurturing Creativity and Building Skills 🌟

The December holiday was a time of fun, learning and growth for the children of farm workers at Groot Patrysvlei, one of Capespan’s citrus farms in the Western Cape. As part of a Blue Hand initiative, a dedicated youth mentor and the use of an after-school room provided a safe and inspiring environment for young minds to thrive during this time.

Here’s how we made a difference:
🎨 Creative Expression – Art activities encouraged imagination and self-expression.
🏀 Fun and Games – Board and ball games fostered teamwork and problem-solving.
🌱 Life Skills Development – Daily activities included basic skills to empower and prepare children for the future.

Capespan’s Blue Hand initiative remains committed to enriching the lives of our farm workers and their families. By blending fun with education, we’re helping to build confident, creative, and capable young leaders.

📢 Follow us to learn more about how we’re making a lasting impact across our farming communities.

After being packed and chilled, our grapes begin their journey - sometimes over 800km to port, to the ports of Cape Town or Walvis Bay. Maintaining the cold chain across this distance is a monumental task, but with skilled and experienced personnel and advanced logistics, we ensure the fruit arrives as fresh as the day it was harvested.

Capespan’s dedication to precision logistics ensures that our table grapes are always of the best quality, no matter where in the world they’re enjoyed.

From then to now, we’ve evolved with the times, but our roots in excellence and sustainability run just as deep. Here’s to being timeless in taste and quality—and to continuing to connect farms to tables across the globe.

"We Deliver" is more than just a slogan for Capespan—it’s the cornerstone of our promise to bring premium table grapes to European, UK, and global markets. As non-climacteric fruits, table grapes do not ripen after harvest. This means they must be picked at their peak ripeness and delivered to consumers as swiftly as possible to retain their exceptional quality and flavour. Capespan has embraced this challenge, refining logistics to ensure our grapes arrive fresh and on time, year after year.

Jack's Salute™ is a red seedless table grape variety. It was developed by International Fruit Genetics (IFG), officially designated as IFG Nine and today this variety is owned by Bloom Fresh. It is characterized by naturally large, oval to elongated berries that develop without the need for growth-enhancing treatments. The grapes exhibit a deep red colour, firm to crispy texture, and a sweet, neutral flavour. They form large, naturally loose bunches and are known for high productivity and good storage capabilities.

The table grape variety is named in honour of Jack Pandol, a prominent figure in the California grape industry, who played an instrumental role in the development and commercialization of various grape varieties and contributed significantly to modern grape farming practices. The name pays tribute to his legacy in agriculture, his service in World War II, and his unique tradition of saluting his staff as a gesture of respect and gratitude for their hard work.

In Southern Africa, Jack's Salute™ grapes are typically harvested from mid to late season, which generally falls between January and March. Capespan’s Jack’s Salute™ grapes are grown in Namibia in collaboration with the Namibia Grape Company (NGC).

From Desert Landscapes to Global Markets

The Orange River is often called the "Nile of the South," due to the desert landscape it traverses in its lower regions. The river provides abundant water and fertile soils for table grape farming in a region where rain is scarce. While this region’s hot, dry climate creates production challenges, the lack of humidity decreases the risk of pests and diseases. This combination of alluvial soils and hot, dry weather, makes it ideal for cultivating premium-quality grapes for the global market.

Capable hands and sustainable farming practices turn this arid region into a hub of excellence – as seen here at Capespan’s Arendsnes Farm.

Wacky Wednesday Throwback: The Mini Outspan Orange 🍊

In the 1970s, the citrus industry took a bold leap in marketing with the creation of the Mini Outspan Orange, a promotional car designed to look like a giant orange! Built on the chassis of the classic Mini, six of these unique vehicles were crafted to promote Outspan Oranges.

With its bright, round design and unmistakable charm, the Mini Outspan Orange became an ambassador for South African citrus, traveling through Europe and even making its way back to South Africa. Its mission? To capture attention and cement Outspan as a household name in the global citrus market.

Today, the Mini Outspan Orange stands as a nostalgic icon of innovation, creativity, and the ingenuity of the agricultural sector in the 1970s.

Where are they now? Some are housed in museums, including the National Motor Museum in the UK, while others are in private collections or yet to be rediscovered.

What does this remind us? That creativity and bold ideas can help agricultural brands make an unforgettable impact.
Do you remember this iconic car? Did you ever see one in person? Let us know in the comments! 💭

Packhouses Cooled for Perfection

Take a glimpse into the Valam packhouse! In our state-of-the-art packhouses, evaporative coolers create a cooler indoor temperature than the sweltering outdoors. This protects the grapes while they are being packed and provides a comfortable working environment for the packing staff. As soon as the packing process is completed, the packed grapes are cooled to the optimum temperature in preparation for the start of the transport and export process.

It’s all part of our commitment to quality—protecting our fruit every step of the way.

The Importance of Pre-Cooling

Once our grapes are harvested, speed is essential. Our grapes are carefully but rapidly transported to pre-cooling holding rooms near the vineyards, as seen on the photo taken on Noudonsies during harvest time. Once at the pre-cooling holding rooms, they are chilled to optimal temperatures before packing. This prevents dew formation inside the packaging, ensuring freshness during their journey to international markets.

Meticulously maintaining the cold chain at every step is how we guarantee that Capespan grapes arrive in perfect condition, no matter where they’re headed.

Micro Sprinklers for Significant Cooling Benefits

In the sweltering conditions of the Orange River region, innovative solutions make all the difference. On our production units, we use raised micro sprinklers, positioned a meter above the ground, to distribute a fine mist of water below the grape canopy. This creates an evaporative cooling effect, lowering the temperature under the grapevine canopy and protecting our precious fruit from heat stress.

Here the vineyards are getting their much-needed water via micro sprinklers on Valam Farm.
