The Kouberg Pass is concreted over the steepest parts. That’s Wupperthal down in the valley.

The summit is at 925m ASL and drops steeply within a few metres of the summit revealing almost the entire length of the pass down to Wupperthal and one gains a true perspective of just how steep the pass is.

It descends 446 vertical metres over 4,6km producing an average gradient of 1:10, placing it amongst the steepest passes in South Africa. The concrete sections are as steep as 1:6 with one or two short sections at 1:5

It’s best to gear down and run against engine compression to avoid your brakes overheating.
