I wrote this blog 5 years ago upon my return from the Netherlands. It still applies.
“My trip to the Netherlands made me realize once again that we are blessed as South Africans. In the Netherlands, everything works like clockwork, to the second, on time, buses, trains, planes, everything is tidy, clean. Modern and trendy development mixing with magnificent old buildings, facades, streets. Somewhere a beautiful pot with winter flowers brightening up a dull corner, a tiny garden promising a colourful spring extravaganza. The old city centres are charming and beautiful, the country side, romantic with the windmills even with it's icy white beauty. And yet, there is a sadness in the air. People are focused, dressed in dark shades of grey and black, no smiles, it is like an ants nest with everybody on their way to work, and with determination of the task ahead, quickly walking from the shelter and warmth of home to a train, to their work place to be warm. Dark when you leave home, dark when you get home. One can understand that to focus on what has to be done makes life easier. Dutch politics, like everywhere else in the world, also a bit of a shambles at the moment with elections imminent. But, The promise of a European summer will change everything and at least there will be a smile and a happy "goede morgen" here and there. The landscape will again be happy and green, colourful flowers, and leisurely long days to enjoy on the beach or elsewhere in Europe. Understandably summer is something to look forward to. I guess what I am trying to say is this.
We as South africans often complain about our politics and the circus it is. We complain, things are expensive, Some of us also walk around being unhappy.
Let me tell you, we can want for nothing. We have everything to make our lives spectacular. We eat well, we live well, we have nature, sunshine, fresh air, awe inspiring landscapes, mountains, waterfalls, we have light.
I love my "home country" so many call Holland. I love my family and friends there, the food, the culture, the beauty and my roots there, but I am also lucky to be able to call South Africa home, and to come home, to be proudly South African, and to LIVE today in this magnificent country. We have a lot to strive for, a lot to learn, but It is very good here.
I once again remembered. We are a blessed people, let us smile at a beautiful day. “Let us be happy. We can be.”
I cannot wait to share this beautiful country with all of you !
