They are the producers of the original version of these absolutely scrumptious small custard tarts.

We believe that the journey is part of the adventure and the first stop on our Western Cape Tour en route to Matjiesfontein is in Franschhoek, just 45 minutes from Cape Town. We visit the La Motte Estate for wine tasting, a look at the Pierneef Art Gallery and the incredible sculptures on the garden walk. Lunch is a short scenic drive to the Opstal Wine Estate in the Worcester area, and from there Majiesfontein is an hour and a half away.

Affectionately known as Matjies, this tiny village in the Western Cape might only have two streets but is has a whole lot of stories and plenty of charm. The Lord Milner Hotel is the heart of Matjies, and Johnny from the hotel is a legend in his own time. Piano player in the bar, tour guide around the hotel, driver of the red Beefeater bus and ghost story guide supreme. A visit to this town is not complete without a conversation or tour with Johnny.
