Wildwood Africa Adventure (Vic Falls/Zambia/Malawi/Tanzania)

It's two weeks since returning from our most ambitious sortie into Africa. Travel is often challenging and I guess travel in Africa more so, but I have to confess I was ill prepared for the reality of what I'd taken on. Two weeks has allowed the memories of the beauty of Africa and the wonderful people we met to rise above discontentment. To rise above the anger I felt towards successive governments seeped in corruption that have allowed these beautiful countries infrastructure to crumble while they bask in their massive accumulated wealth. To rise above the anger of corrupt and surly border officials, endless road blocks, destroyed roads and the abuse and cruelty to animals.

As a fellow African it pains me to advise people not to visit African countries who are so in need of your dollar and Euro but I'd be guilty of deceit if I sugar coated my experience.

Two weeks have given time to reassess.
Am I glad I went? Yes.
Would I go again? Unlikely.

We had it all. Four lengthy and very expensive border crossings with 10 motorcycles, 3 cars and two trailers. Average time spent at each was 4 hours and the longest 6 and a half hours. Imagine what 6,5 hours does for a schedule when you have a stunning and US$ expensive hotel booked. To many night rides through endless villages with both people and animals on the poor quality roads?

And of course the bu****it speed trap in Zambia which was simple extortion.

Police, immigration and military road blocks are a constant and lord knows what they need them for, other than intimidation.

And probably my biggest gripe is the cost of travel. All good lodges are priced in US$ and stupidly overpriced. If the cash went to the impoverished local communities I'd be less reluctant to pay but my feeling is it's syphoned offshore. Currency is confusing and cash machines rarely work which means you need to take a stash of US dollars and accept the money changers are going to fleece you at every turn.

On a tour like ours with every night pre-booked and paid for there was no room for holdups like 6 hour border crossings and 2 hour fake speed trap negotiations. Perhaps the only way to visit these beautiful countries is in an overland vehicle with a roof tent as a contingency plan.

Even Ngorongoro Crater where spent our final two days felt like a tourist trap. At every turn I felt the emphasis was on extracting as much cash from us as possible and less on showcasing the immense beauty of the destinations.

Lessons learned. Hell yes.
If I ever went again it wouldn't be by road.
I'd do one country at a time.
And leave way more time for travel between stops.

Highlight of the trip would certainly be Lake Malawi. I could happily spend a week on the lake. Also the regular people are amazing and incredibly friendly. Despite the obvious poverty the apparent level of good cheer is off the scale.

Our ride started at Vic Falls and ended at Ngorongoro Crater. traveling via Zambia and Malawi.

As I mentioned above it's highly unlikely I'll visit these countries again. South Africa and Namibia have so much more to offer in a more user-friendly environment.

Both South Africa and Namibia are blessed with a huge range of landscapes, the most abundant and easily accessible wild animals, world class lodges and stunning road networks. If Africa is on your radar look no further than these two countries. Add world class airports and realistic pricing the paradise of Africa is both accessible and affordable. That's where you'll find me.

R3500

( I ordered a Seat Concepts seat when I received the bike but I had a tour planned and couldn't wait. Had this one made locally in the interim.
Only 4 days of touring and the Seat Concepts had arrived. I honestly couldn't fault this seat. )

Kaokoland Special Edition - August report.

Another really special Kaokoland/ Damaraland tour (they're all special)

A private charter flight from Windhoek delivered our group in Ruacana on the Angola/ Namibia border. Eight epic days back to Windhoek followed.

The legendary rugged tracks of the north never disappoint, along with the amazing lodges, abundant wild life and welcoming Himba people.

Kaokoland remains 'AFRICA's LAST UNSPOILED PARADISE'.

Next Kaokoland / Damaraland tour - June 2025

A good friend of WILDWOOD has entered Dakar 2025 and raising cash for what is a mega expensive dream.

If you think Rally might be something in your future or you're simply looking for a great ride experience then Willem's Roadbook event is a good bet. No need to have your own road and GPS's will suffice.

Give Willem a shout.
