ZIMBABWE / ZAMBIA / MALAWI / TANZANIA

I've always wanted to explore beyond the Limpopo and Kunene Rivers and when a group of regular WildWood guests suggested visiting The Ngorongoro Crater in Northern Tanzania a plan was set I'm motion.

We met the bikes on the Zimbabwe side of Vic Falls and made our way through Northern Zimbabwe through Zambia and Malawi.

Highlights included the southern side of Lake Kariba, Lake Malawi and specifically Livingstonia, Lake Manyara and obviously the Ngorongoro Crater. Africa has so much to offer and such natural beauty screaming out to be experienced. But probably my most cherished memories are the people of all 4 countries. Despite the obvious poverty and crumbling governance the warmth and good cheer blew me away. At no point on our travels did I ever feel unsafe or unwelcome other than from immigration / police / military.

Sadly not all my memories are positive. Other than Tanzania the roads are destroyed beyond belief, fuel is often hard to secure and dollar pricing / raw greed is fast becoming the death of African tourism. And the big reason I'm unlikely ever to do a multi-country overland Africa trip again is the chaos, corruption and crazy costs of border crossings. The border checkpoints are entire economic ecosystems supporting the border towns and seemingly if not encouraged then accepted by the various governments. Spending most of a day of your vacation hanging around in limbo at a crowded sweaty sh****le and forced to pay dodgy fixers in US $ for taxes, insurances and permits for which you receive a hand written invoice destroyed any goodwill for me.

When I look back at the lovely pics taken by photographer Sam Clark I'm reminded of the good stuff and the great times we had on our two week Africa adventure.

For my final act of 2024 I was privileged to guide my two guests from Leipzig, Germany around the Garden Route and Karoo.

7 Days riding with the highlight being The Baviaanskloof World Heritage Reserve.

No matter how many times I visit these areas I can't but marvel at the incredible region we live in. Mind-blowing wilderness areas and a network of stunning roads and tracks to suit any any level of adventure. And then at the end of each day a wonderful selection of guest accommodation and world class restaurants.

Bosch Luys Kloof Private Nature Reserve and Rooiberg Lodge are both stunning destinations in themselves and should be on every South Africans bucket lists to visit. Both offer exquisite beauty, luxury accommodation, excellent food and the warmest and professional hospitality. (Visit them and you'll thank me later)

We were blessed with 7 perfect early summer days on our loop starting in Cape Town on a giant clockwise loop to the Bavaiaanskloof and back to Cape Town via the southern most tip of Africa.
