Waterbuck mother and calf
11 April 2024
Kruger National Park, South Africa

During another special game drive in the Kruger, we came across this mother and her baby, who’s coat was a richer red tone after it had rolled around in the soil. It came over to its mom and first jumped on her back. We then captured the tender moment the nurturing mom began to lick its coat clean.

Sustain’s Message on World Ocean’s Day

Happy World Ocean's Day! Today, we honour the home of the Marine Big 5 – sharks, whales, dolphins, seals, and penguins – as well as countless seabirds. Our oceans are teeming with life, and it's our duty to protect and to appreciate these precious ecosystems.

A unique way to appreciate the marine world is through pelagic birding, an adventure that takes you into the open ocean to witness the incredible diversity of seabirds in their natural habitat. Sustain Safaris offers the opportunity to experience pelagic birding tours and Marine Big Five tours with our preferred partners that prioritize conservation and scientific research.

Did you know? By choosing to consume seafood that has been sustainably sourced, you will avoid contributing to overfishing and the destruction of marine habitats.

Environmental history was made on Friday 7 June 2024 when the last of 120 white rhinos was released into the network of private and communal reserves on the western border of the Kruger National Park. The operation was carried out under a strict veil of secrecy to ensure its security.

Sustain’s Message on World Environment Day 🌿

Together with our guests, we have the incredible privilege of spending quality time in wild spaces. Our ethos is to ensure the biodiversity of these places is preserved for future generations, and to contribute towards restoring them. The theme for World Environment Day 2024 is , and we believe that together we can drive change. Here are some ways we can all make a restorative difference: ♻

* Choosing travel options that respect local communities and prioritize best practice conservation. ✈ 🎎
* Supporting local farmers and choosing organic products to promote sustainable agriculture. 🚜🍉
* “Rewilding” sections of our gardens with more indigenous fruiting plants and seeding grasses and allowing them to blossom to full inflorescence and fruit. 🌾🍇
* Joining a local tree-planting initiative, using native species, to contribute to reforestation efforts. 🌱🌳
* Taking simple actions that have a big impact on conserving our precious water resources like purifying and mineralizing our water instead of buying bottled water, fixing leaks, taking shorter showers rather than baths, and using water-efficient appliances. 💧💦
* Reducing waste by rethinking our consumption habits, opting for products with minimal packaging, repurposing items, and recycling wherever possible. 🍟🍬
* Donating to conservation projects – we’re proud of our Sustain Conservation Fund whereby a percentage of each tour we run is donated to the fund to support our favourite organizations doing very special work. See more on our website. 💸🦏

Remember, every small step counts in our journey to protect and restore our planet. 🌍

The tones around the eyes and on the outstretched wing are resplendent on these birds. We encountered many of these beauties on our tour, but struggled to get near enough for a decent shot, and with so many other species to focus on, only managed a few pictures. The 2 images on the bare branch were shot in late evening light, and have had to be substantially brightened, hence the interesting tones.

The tale of two charismatic species cooperating for mutual benefit has captivated naturalists for centuries – but evidence has been patchy. Researchers have now carried out the first large-scale search for evidence.
