Recent years have witnessed a transformation of the birding environment both locally here in Southern Africa but also globally. Smartphone based listing apps tied to global bird databases like eBird have created a synergy between citizen science and the gamification of birding at local and regional levels. These have had and continue to have a profound impact on how birders record and collect data, report their sightings and are goal driven in both competitive and non-competitive ways. By way of preparation for a talk I am doing, I am surveying opinion and feedback on the role and impact of local and regional birding challenges. I am circiulating an online survey (all questions optional) just to gather a wide array of views and perspectives. I really enjoy sharing my passion for the wonders of birds and birding… Birds are just so fascinating and enriching! One of the undoubted joys of birding is “solving the puzzle” – coming to a conclusion about the identity of a bird you encounter in the field. The challenge of Identification is probably the most fundamental joy of birding – and why the game of birding can be so addictive. Join me for a weekend of birding at the wonderful Zaagkuildrift Lodge and Bird Sanctuary – situated down the legendary “Crake Road” north of Pretoria. Of course, a weekend like this is never the beginning for birders, but rather a “big step forward” in terms of knowledge, understanding and enjoyment!! Sometimes I wish I had just taken up birding - and had nothing to compare. Despite an awesome "Warbler Weekend" at Zaagkuilsdrift Bird Sanctuary, Lodge & Bush camp and some stunning birds, I was very aware that the birding seemed remarkably quiet for this time of year. Some of the warblers gave us the run around - despite several Icterines, they didn't give all of my group satisfactory views, same with Olive-tree Warbler, The Thrush Nightingale, crakes, Painted Snipe, Common Swift, and the mass of waterbirds and pratincoles made up for it. I'll be back in March after a foray to Central Mozambique and will report back on whether what I am observing is long term or temporary. Angela Openshaw took the pics!!
