[READ] The Financial Intelligence Centre (FIC) has released a report on identifying and avoiding holiday scams this season. Fraudulent websites, social media pages, and emails often impersonate legitimate travel companies to deceive consumers into making payments for non-existent deals.

To protect yourself against scams, always verify offers that seem too good to be true. If you are targeted, report the incident to the South African Police Service, your financial institution, and the National Consumer Commission.

[READ] As 2024 draws to a close, South Africa’s tourism sector is poised for continued growth. Inflation has eased to 2.8%, and the repo rate remains steady at 8.25%, setting the stage for expansion in the industry.

Increased domestic travel has driven the sector’s recovery, and it is expected to contribute to job growth in the sector by year-end. The private sector continues to focus on making travel more accessible to South Africans during the holiday season.

In 2023, revenge tourism played a key role in boosting domestic travel, as locals took the opportunity to explore more of their own country. This surge supported the economy, creating a solid foundation for the sector’s ongoing growth into 2024.

[READ] The Field Guides Association of Southern Africa (FGASA) is transitioning from a CATHSSETA-accredited training provider to a professional body recognized by the South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA).

This move aligns with the government's 2021 Tourism Sector Masterplan and Professionalisation Strategy, ensuring a highly skilled, well-trained workforce for South Africa's nature-guiding sector.

Founded in 1991, FGASA has trained over 40,000 field guides. By mid-2026, FGASA will cease offering entry-level accredited programs, and aspiring guides will need to obtain qualifications through the Quality Council for Trades and Occupations (QCTO).

This shift will formalize the sector, allowing FGASA to advocate for its members, maintain high standards, and promote transformation and diversity. Nature guiding will be formally recognized as a professional career, contributing to South Africa's competitiveness in tourism.

This training ensures that guides deliver safe, enriching experiences for travelers.

Did you know that field guides not only need to be experts in their local areas but also undergo extensive skill-based training to provide world-class guided experiences?

[READ] Universal access (UA) is a key focus for the tourism industry, going beyond compliance to foster inclusivity for all.

With 1.3 billion people globally living with significant disabilities, accessible travel is an essential consideration for businesses worldwide.

Bronwen Auret, Head of the Tourism Grading Council of South Africa (TGCSA), emphasizes that universal access is not only about meeting legal requirements but also about creating transformative experiences for all travelers—benefiting families, seniors, and those facing temporary challenges.

The tourism sector should work to break down barriers and create environments where everyone can thrive.
