Lying in the zone of an extinct volcano, Pilanesberg National Park is located north of Rustenburg in the North West Province of South Africa. This Park covers an area of about 550 km2.

The Pilanesberg area is an excellent venue for Lowveld birding, with more than 300 species recorded. A typical day may yield 100 species or more in the summer months from November to April when migrants are present. For close-up viewing and photography, you can visit the walk-in aviary with over 80 species of indigenous birds.

Pilanesberg Game Reserve is regarded as one of the top birding destinations in southern Africa for good reason. There are plenty of opportunities in the reserve to get out of your car and get a closer look at birds. The reserve is dotted with a selection of hides at dams where a dedicated birder can patiently wait to spot the bird he or she is looking for.

Before planning for a destination to travel to, you should have a general idea of how much it may cost for your trip expenses.

While visiting Cape Town, you should know that the rand is generally fairly weak compared to many currencies, so South Africa is quite an affordable destination if you're coming from Europe, Oceania or North America.

Cape Town's living costs are pretty high compared to the rest of the country, so plan to spend a lot on transport, parking and meals. Book your flight on a day when the flights are cheaper (avoid booking on weekends and during the holiday seasons) and stick with affordable accommodation options.
