Golden Gate Challenge
The Golden Gate Challenge is a 3-day track and trail run through some of the most rugged yet scenic mountains of the Free State, situated in the Golden Gate Highlands National Park. The race will traverse through restricted parts of the reserve rarely seen by the public, like Little Serengeti, Cathedral Caves and many other hidden gems within the park. Participants will cover just over 70km in 3 days, staged out of a single base camp in the Golden Gate Highlands National Park. Please do not judge the race by its distances, as it is a true challenge offering great rewards, but that means conquering big mountains and high altitudes. You will pass by ancient rock paintings and relics of past civilisations as you run this race with the knowledge that you are running for the survival of a species – the Bearded Vulture.

WHY IS CLARENS SO POPULAR?
We have loads of restaurants, art galleries, quaint and unique shops, which alone can keep you busy for an entire week! All within a 2 to 5 minute walk from Khaya Clarens.
Our restaurants serve world class food for every possible taste.
We have great pubs and some offers big screen TVs to watch major sports events.
The biggest advantage of Khaya Clarens is that we are a 4-minute walk from the town square. Yet despite us being so close to the town centre, we are in a quiet cul-de-sac and the buzz of the town does not cause a disturbance.
Then there are activities in Clarens like zip-lining, white water rafting (seasonal), quad bike trails, archery, paintball, wall climbing, abseiling, and more.
Visit the Golden Gate Highlands National Park, where you can cycle or drive through. An artist and photographer’s delight is the incredible rock formations and landscape. Very early mornings and late afternoons often are good times to view wildlife.
And the best of all is our hiking trails where you can set out on foot from Khaya Clarens. The trail maps are colour coded for the difficulty and whether or not you would need a permit.
If you are interested in cultural heritage, visits to the Basotho Cultural Village and the Batoulong Fertility Caves would be a must. (Both about an hour outside of Clarens) Batoulong may be a bit challenging to reach in the rainy season, as you will have to cross a river on foot.
There’s the Vulture Restaurant at Golden Gate. You will have to pay conservation fee.
Or simply take a drive through the Golden Gate National Park and be amazed at the rock formations. No cost involved unless you want to drive down the loops for which you will need a permit.
Visit the Ash River Outfall where water being ejected from an underground 82km tunnel into a weir before it flows into the Ash River.
Go and spend the day at Lionsrock. An AMAZING day out for any animal lover.
Browse the Cluny Animal Trust 2nd hand bookshop at the Viewing Deck restaurant. Two separate sections filled to the brim with books, CDs and DVDs. You can take as much as you like for a donation to fund their work.
We have people who will take you on historical and cultural scenic tours and guided hiking trails.
So whether you just want to sit and do nothing while watching people go by, or you want to do something extreme………..Clarens is the place!
