There's a hot new eatery in Clarens called Antojitos - Simply Street Food and they are serving up some incredible Mexican-inspired dishes. Eric and Anna-Marie recently made the big move to the platteland to follow their dream of opening their own restaurant - here's the story:

A 'Little Craving' For Clarens: The story of a big city chef & his dreams about a small town life.

After a string of big-city gigs in the food industry, including setting up the restaurant of a famous radio personality, our chef Eric has finally got the chance to pursue his dream of owning an eatery.

On a recent romantic getaway, Eric and his spouse happened upon an opportunity to open a Mexican streetfood eatery in the heart of Clarens, the jewel of the Free State.

With a little duct tape and a boatload of courage, they packed up their shared life in pursuit of a small town fairytale.

Named after the Mexican term for streetfood or 'little cravings' their shop Antojitos has become a note-worthy stop on your next trip to Clarens.

A rich background in Mexican cuisine gives chef Eric the skill to create flavour profiles that will leave your mouth watering. His tenacious wife, Anna-Marie, has found her place in this culinary dream and plays charming hostess on the weekends when her career as French lecturer and researcher allows it.

Between his passion and her congeniality, all they need is your support to prove that dreams do come true if you've got the right salsa partner. Add a Salitos Tequila Beer or frozen Margarita to your Burito or Tacos, and Antojitos will prove to be a dining experience you don't want to miss out on.

The good news is that it is the weekend, the sun is shining, and Clarens has flowing water...but the reality is that the limited supply we currently have could very quickly run dry if we don't all try our best to save water.

If you are visiting our village this weekend, we kindly request that you use water as sparingly as possible.

A few ideas:

Don't take long, deep baths. Rather opt for a quick, stop-and-start shower. This gives you more time to enjoy and explore the village and surrounds anyways. 😉

Please reuse towels and linen, please close taps while brushing your teeth and don't flush until its really necessary.

Every drop counts!

The CLUNY ANIMAL TRUST will be at the Festival of Flavours!

The small but dedicated team of veterinary professionals from the Cluny Animal Trust provides in excess of 13 000 treatments every year to animals across the eastern Free State. Their main focus is to provide basic preventive veterinary care – this includes
sterilisations, vaccinations, deworming and tick and flea treatments to poor and previously disadvantaged pet owners.

Come join Kåho Stargazing this week for a beautiful full moon hike on Thursday the 17th Oct, come cloudy or clear skies, the energy will still enhance your whole being. We are very excited to share a new venue for stargazing & more to unfold…watch this space!

There will also finally be visibility of the Tsuchinshan-ATLAS comet from the 15th, and so far, Friday's weather looks like it will be incredible for this experience.

Meet Kantinyana Johannes Mofokeng - better known as Kent. Born and raised in Clarens, he is the youngest of 7 siblings and owns JAVA BAE Coffee Shop, which is situated next to the Jacket Shop. Kent has a passion for coffee and he loves interacting with his patrons and having conversations outside his shop, set against the backdrop of a magnificent view of Horeb. Kent won the Diners Club Barista of the year in 2023 and will be making his delicious coffee on the square at the Festival of Flavours on Saturday 23 November 2024. How was our beautiful village established and where did the name come from? Clarens was established in 1912 when a company bought two farms and divided these into smaller plots to be sold.
