Hiking the Wild Coast is one of the most unique experience you can do in South Africa. You will experience a diverse mix of wide open hills, long pristine beaches, local Xhosa villages and some of the most spectacular wildlife in South Africa. Winter through to spring is Whale season and its one of the few land based whale viewing sites, the clifftops and hills create a great vantage point to view

the mothers and their calves. If you are lucky enough to be around when the cold currents push the sardines up the coast you will witness one of the world's greatest coastal events. Dolphins, whales, gannets, sharks and other predators all come together to take advantage of the sardines trapped between the warm coastal waters and the coastline. It is an experience not to be missed and can be viewed during your hike. There is an amazing diversity of plant and animal life along the coastline and as you dip into river valleys or wander along the hills you will have close contact with it all. Your guides are often just showing you the way but some will give you a glimpse into the culture, food and way of life in the area. When you visit the lodges and backpackers along the route make sure to ask if there are village tours on offer. For more information or to book please contact us! We are happy to help.

This Wild & Free adventure, sure knows how to throw an interesting twist every now and again, however been tracked down by National TV News, to share our good vibes with our Nation was not a twist we could have imagined 🙏

The sure is starting to blossom into something really magical and beautiful and we are stoked to share it with you all.

Every year our experience deepens in so many ways, however the connections we strengthen with the local communities and people as we make new friends on the way really warms our hearts.

One of the rides ethos’s is to positively connect with the people of the land in as many positive ways as possible, by immersing ourselves in the rich culture, supporting local small businesses in any way we can. Whether it’s staying with rural families in VBA’s (Village Based Accommodation) or community involved accommodation and Backpackers. Stopping off at Shebeens for a cold and dance or shopping at a family spaza for a snack or supporting local crafters, fishermen, ferrymen and activities.

A huge shout out to all those that have turned this dream into such a beautiful reality and to all the open arms, happy smiles and warm hearts as we ride through the villages. Our hearts are filled with gratitude, awe and love.

A massive thanx to the SABC TV Crew that followed us for 5hours to capture the essence of the ride and the Mtentu community for there sharing of song, dance and stories.

You've got to be in it to experience it!!!!!!!! We say this over and over again on the sardine run each year. You just NEVER know what you are going to see and when.

It's not just about the common dolphins, sharks and cape gannets on a bait ball. When the smaller, faster predators move in, the dynamic of the bait ball becomes frenetic.

The skipjacks aka striped tuna, oceanic bonito are a medium sized fish in the tuna family and can grow up to 1m in length.

They eat a variety of prey including small fish, pelagic crustaceans, squid and small invertebrates. They rely on their swimming speed to overcome and bite prey.

When you are on a bait ball and these fast swimming predators move in, you can actually see the sardines tighten their guard, the entire vibe within the shoal changes to one of extreme nervousness and its a sight to behold to see how fast these skipjacks charge in and out.

Thanks to our client Dixon for this superb capture of a different aspect within a bait ball.
