The Story of Colesberg

I am standing on top of a mountain and the whole world lies before me. The air is still and clear. The rain has laid the dust so that the visual range us infinite. On top I can see where the Orange river runs, hills of the Nu-Hantam are Hebron, home of the first among the thin stream of migrants who resolve to stay. I can see a train at a great distance crawling across the veld at the place where commissariat trucks once ran uncontrolled down the line into the hands of a Boer command. I can see quite close below, where once the race course lay. This little spot of bloodied sunlit soil in South Africa, the history of humanity in its onward drive.
