Back in 1876, after Kgosi Moshoete (I) had made Khunwana his place of abode, he redeployed Kgosi Phoi (I) to occupy a place called Motsitlane.

Prior to his redeployment, Phoi (I) was the royal representative in political meetings with government of the day.

His bloodline had been very prominent within the Ratlou-Seitshiro clan in general, and very influential in the Moshoete royal house in particular.

Phoi (I) was a son of Gontse, who had been Moshoete (I)’s Regent and Mentor for 22 years.

Gontse’s father was Mokoto (I); and he was the one who organized for Moshoete (I)’s father – Kgosi (II) – to go for initiation and groomed him for Bogosi.

Mokoto (I) was a son of Seitshiro (I), who was the founding father of Barolong boo-Ratlou ba ga Seitshiro when they separated with Barolong boo-Ratlou ba ga Mariba at a place called Mosita.

This Seitshiro (I), together with his brothers – Mariba, Mokalaka, Moirwagale & Lephorotlho– shared Ratlou as their father.

Ratlou was Kgosikgolo Tau’s senior son (by royal rank) and thereby
heir apparent to the Barolong throne.

Tau was a son of Thibela-a-Mokgopa-a-Masipha-a-Setlhare-a-Monnyane-a-Tshesebe-a-Modiboa-a-Mabeo-a-Monoto-a-Mabua-a-Mabe-a-Morara-a-Nôtô-a-Morolong (founding father of Barolong).

Phoi (I)'s descendant- Gaesegwe Henry Phoi- is still Kgosi of Barolong boo-Ratlou ba ga Phoi at the time of publishing this book.

The Battle of Kraaipan was the first engagement of the Second Anglo-Boer War, fought at Kraaipan, South Africa on 12 October 1899

De la Rey and his savagely bearded scouts soon discovered an British armored train dubbed "Mosquito" steaming towards the railway station.

He immediately tore up the railway lines on both sides of the station, and also cut the telegraph wires.

This mobile "fort" consisted of an engine and two trucks lined with bullet-proof armor sheeting, and was armed with a Maxim and two mountain guns.

The "fort" bore down upon the station at Kraaipan during the evening of the 13th of October, the officer in command being evidently ignorant of the damage done to the railway line.

The engine and trucks capsized on reaching the derailed spot and the burghers prevented the train from being replaced on the rails by sending continuos fire throughout the night,
meanwhile the enemy responded with hot fire from the Maxim and two mountain guns keeping De la Rey at a distance.

Morning came and Captain Van der Merwe arrived with cannon opening fire on the poor bastards, the white flag was hoisted, and the enemy surrendered.

After the 5 hour fight the cannons, rifles, ammunition (with confirmation of Dum-Dum bullets in the mix), supplies and prisoners were all taken by the Boers.
