What is the difference between Shivratri and Maha Shivratri? Shivratri occurs every month, whereas Maha Shivratri is the great night of Shiva that occurs only once a year. The 14th day of every lunar month is known as Shivratri.

So, there are twelve Shivratris in a calendar year that occur a day prior to the new moon.

Every lunar month, there is a Shivaratri (12 per year).
Significance: self study, Night of marriage between Shiva and Parvati, yoga
Observances: Fasting, yoga, jagran (all night vigil), Lingam puja
Observed by: Hindus

Grace of Shiva, who is considered the Adi Guru or the First Guru, from whom the yogic tradition originates. This festival is considered to be the meeting of Shiva and Shakti. It is believed that on Maha Shivaratri, Lord Shiva married Goddess Parvati and according to the Hindu calendar, Shivaratri is marked every luni-solar month.

The term Maha Shivaratri means the 'Great Night of Shiva' and falls on the 13th night and 14th day of the New Moon. It is said that Lord Shiva used to perform the tandava nritya (dance) on Maha Shivaratri and this is one of the most sacred festivals in India.

The purpose of this prayer are for those who want a deeper connection to Lord Shiva and experience his energy in all his dimensions.

Doing any kind of spiritual practice on this phase of the moon is most auspicious and will help strengthen and protect you against all of lifes calamities.

Maha Mrityunjaya Mantra: Om Tryambakam Yajamahe Sugandhim Pushti-Vardhanam, Urvarukamiva Bandhanan Mrityormukshiya Mamritat

Rudra Gayatri Mantra:
