You're single, a senior citizen, and long to take a trip to some exciting destination. But there's a couple of problems. You don't have transport, or like-minded friends. Fret no more.
Africa Memories Travel could be the answer you've been looking for.
Owner Val de Bruyn is bright and breezy, an efficient planner, full of fun. She also genuinely likes older people; wants to brighten their days and loves spoiling them.
How can I make such a sweeping statement? Because I've just returned from a trip with her.
So let me take you away, and whet your appetite...
Our destination was Nambiti Game Reserve, where we were booked into Springbok Lodge. Many of my friends have visited this lodge and come back with glowing accounts. While I'd been to Nambiti three times previously, I'd not stayed at Springbok. Time to give it a whirl.
Val and driver Shane picked me up bang on time. It was a bonus. Quite often one has to make one's way to a central pick up point. A big tick in the company's favour.
When all seven travellers were on board, off we went with a stop en route to tuck into fat, tasty sandwiches and other goodies along with coffee, tea or hot chocolate which Val had prepared for us.
Over the next three nights we were pampered not only by Val and Shane, but the lodge's staff.
Each morning we rose early for a game drive which from day one produced exciting results. This was thanks to our top notch ranger/guide Brent, who proved a whizz on shrubs and trees, and a mine of information about all matters pertaining to the animal kingdom.
He has another string to his fiddle. He is an expert on the history of the Anglo Boer War battles which took place in the area, and no slouch when it comes to the Zulu history linked to these parts. So the stories flowed while the game entered and departed the stage as if conjured up by a magician.
Magnificent lions put on a display involving a family dispute between the alpha male and his two young sons who were overstepping the mark regarding the females.
To my mind, the two young bucks should have gone poste haste gallivanting after two lone females in a different part of the reserve. Both of these were in prime condition. According to Brent they are superb hunters. So why antagonise dad when there are such fine pickings?!!
As for dad, he was a beautiful specimen, with lush gold and black male flowing down to his knees, rippling muscles and glossy coat
Two cheetahs lolled on the wide open savanah but one evening, as night was sweeping it's mantle over the earth, they trotted past our vehicle at a pace, while rain threw icy drops at all and sundry.
Interestingly, despite heavy intermittent rain or gloomy skies, the game viewing proved better than on a sunny day. Wool lined waterproof ponchos, courtesy of the lodge, made it easy to thumb our noses at the elements.
A family of elephant entertained with two teenagers tussling with each other. After our departure we could hear the matriarch trumpeting her displeasure at such behaviour.
A jackal with part of an Impala clutched between his teeth (no doubt pinched from a lion or cheetah kill) trotted past with a proud swagger.
Rhinos, both black and white, sent spirits soaring. A happy moment in a world of slaughtered rhinos.
I could go on and on, but think you've got the picture by now.

Africa Memories Travel is an owner-run Africa Specialist Tour Operator, that tailor-makes unique travel experiences combining destinations, lodges, activities and various modes of transport. Each guest booking is treated uniquely and personally, ensuring high quality tailor-made itineraries best suited to their needs and expectations.
I have been in the tour industry since 2008 and directly involved in volunteer conservation work in South Africa for just as long and before that was involved with working with key conservationists and travel partners in Swaziland. Before that, I was in the corporate world but my passion for travel in Africa pulled me into a direction that I will forever be grateful for and am privileged to share my love, knowledge and experience of Africa with the rest of the world through travel.
Over the years I have established and wide portfolio of destinations in Africa and have visited as many as I have been able to, equipping me with first-hand knowledge and experience to best tailor-make itineraries suited to my guests rather than only standardised packages making their experiences unique to them. I treat every travel itinerary personally, carefully selecting destinations best suited to the profile of my guests - this take focus, time, creativity and detail. When guests arrive in Africa they know that they are in safe, capable hands throughout their journey and leave with unforgettable memories and often life-changing experiences.
Africa has an indescribable feeling and Brian Jackman probably says it best: “Africa changes you forever, like nowhere on earth. Once you have been there, you will never be the same. But how do you begin to describe its magic to someone who has never felt it? How can you explain the fascination of this vast, dusty continent, whose oldest roads are elephant paths? Could it be because Africa is the place of all our beginnings, the cradle of mankind, where our species first stood upright on the savannahs of long ago?” Brian Jackman (freelance writer)
Additional specialist safaris also include Hosted Retirement Retreats for the ‘Golden Oldies’ - these are tours tailored to suit retired folk who prefer to travel in small groups, who feel safe and nurtured by our dedicated hosts who accompany them throughout their journey giving them the TLC that they deserve, resulting in guests feel rejuvenated. These safaris are hugely rewarding not only for the guests but for us as well - we are in the business of happiness.
Conservation-Focused Safaris are close to my heart and making a difference in conservation in any way possible is something I’m extremely passionate about. On these safaris, we focus on conservation issues and include hand-picked destinations, experiences and key conservationists to engage with our guests. Each safari is insightful and takes safaris to a deeper level of understanding and appreciation for conservation and preservation of our wild spaces and all that find refuge here and each safari directly contributes to conservation efforts.
