Good Morning Traveller's

To Start our Wednesday off I thought we'd learn about some weird and wonderful Ostrich facts you probably didn’t know !

Here they are...

1. World’s Largest Bird: Ostriches are the largest birds on Earth, standing up to 9 feet tall and weighing up to 150 kilograms (330 pounds).

2. Speed Champions: They’re not just big—they’re fast! Ostriches can sprint up to 70 km/h (43 mph), making them the fastest running birds. Their long strides can cover 10 to 16 feet in a single step!

3. Two-Toed Wonders: Unlike other birds with three or four toes, ostriches only have two toes, which helps them run faster.

4. Powerful Legs: Their legs are so strong they can deliver a kick capable of killing a predator like a lion!

5. Egg-cellent Eggs: Ostriches lay the largest eggs of any bird. One ostrich egg is the equivalent of about 24 chicken eggs and can weigh up to 1.4 kilograms (3 pounds).

6. No Flying, All Running: Ostriches are flightless, but their wings still serve a purpose! They use them for balance while running and for courtship displays.

7. Built-In Sunglasses: Ostriches have long eyelashes to protect their eyes from the sun and sand in their native habitats.

8. Amazing Vision: Their eyes are larger than their brains and are the biggest of any land animal—perfect for spotting predators from miles away.

9. Social Birds: Ostriches often live in groups of 5 to 50 birds, led by a dominant male and female.

10. Fun Behavior: Ostriches don't bury their heads in the sand! When they feel threatened, they lay their heads flat on the ground to blend in with their surroundings.

Do you have an interest in doing a trip to see these fascinating birds?
What fact did you find the most interesting?

We've added some pics of our trip to the Ostrich Farm in Cape Town. What an interesting visit it was!
We highly recommend it.

Have a happy week Further!

Lotsa Love

A groundbreaking investigation into a rhino poaching network in South Africa had a major development last week, when a high-ranking rhino horn trafficker was sentenced to 18 years. The sentencing follows a multi-year investigation tracing illicit financial flows and revealing a complex crime syndicate suspected of poaching rhinos in Kruger National Park.

At Save the Rhino International, we’re not investigators, but when we heard about this critical case, we knew we had a vital role to play. So, we put our expertise to work by sourcing and providing the funding needed to fuel a thorough investigation into the rhino poaching network. Because stopping wildlife crime isn’t just about action on the ground, it’s about ensuring that investigations get the support they need to succeed.

Our Story

Africa Memories Travel is an owner-run Africa Specialist Tour Operator, that tailor-makes unique travel experiences combining destinations, lodges, activities and various modes of transport. Each guest booking is treated uniquely and personally, ensuring high quality tailor-made itineraries best suited to their needs and expectations.

I have been in the tour industry since 2008 and directly involved in volunteer conservation work in South Africa for just as long and before that was involved with working with key conservationists and travel partners in Swaziland. Before that, I was in the corporate world but my passion for travel in Africa pulled me into a direction that I will forever be grateful for and am privileged to share my love, knowledge and experience of Africa with the rest of the world through travel.

Over the years I have established and wide portfolio of destinations in Africa and have visited as many as I have been able to, equipping me with first-hand knowledge and experience to best tailor-make itineraries suited to my guests rather than only standardised packages making their experiences unique to them. I treat every travel itinerary personally, carefully selecting destinations best suited to the profile of my guests - this take focus, time, creativity and detail. When guests arrive in Africa they know that they are in safe, capable hands throughout their journey and leave with unforgettable memories and often life-changing experiences.

Africa has an indescribable feeling and Brian Jackman probably says it best: “Africa changes you forever, like nowhere on earth. Once you have been there, you will never be the same. But how do you begin to describe its magic to someone who has never felt it? How can you explain the fascination of this vast, dusty continent, whose oldest roads are elephant paths? Could it be because Africa is the place of all our beginnings, the cradle of mankind, where our species first stood upright on the savannahs of long ago?” Brian Jackman (freelance writer)
