Breaking Travel News: Ireland has lifted its travel restrictions for South African travellers as of 22 December. Travellers must fill out a Passenger Locator Form (PLF) before departure(https://bit.ly/30SXiG9).
Vaccinated or recovered travellers will need to produce a negative antigen test no more than 48 hours before arrival or a negative RT-PCR test no more than 72 hours before you arrive.
Non-vaccinated travellers will need to produce a negative RT-PCR test no more than 72 hours before arrival.
All passengers arriving in Ireland are now advised to conduct antigen testing on a daily basis for a period of 5 consecutive days commencing on day of arrival

Travel Information Update - DUBAI
UAE media are reporting that the UAE will receive tourists “from all countries” fully vaccinated with a vaccine approved by the WHO with effect from tomorrow, August 30. Arriving vaccinated tourists will need to take a rapid PCR test on arrival in Dubai, before leaving the airport.

According to media in Dubai, this applies to travellers from countries such as South Africa, where travel to the UAE has previously been restricted or outright banned.

The news is derived from a joint statement of the Federal Authority for Identity and Citizenship and the National Emergency Crisis and Disasters Management Authority.

Passengers with tourist visas must take a mandatory rapid PCR test at the airport on arrival. The previous rules for unvaccinated travellers, including exempted categories, are reported to remain in place.

Incoming tourists will need to register their vaccination certificates on the ICA website or the Al Hosn app.

TRAVEL INFORMATION UPDATES - EMIRATES AIRLINES

Hot on the heels of the August 3 news that the UAE will allow South Africans to transit in Dubai comes the news that Emirates will lay on 18 flights a week from South Africa to Dubai.

The airline says by August 12 it will provide daily flights from Johannesburg (and double-daily from Johannesburg on four days of the week), four flights a week from Durban and three flights a week from Cape Town.

Travellers from South Africa are not required to be vaccinated, nor to take PCR tests for their transit through Dubai, but need to adhere to the visa, testing and vaccination requirements of the end destination.

Johannesburg, first frequency – starts August 6
Departs JNB at 19h10, and arrives in DXB at 05h25 the following day.
Departs DXB at 09h55 and arrives in JNB at 16h15.

These above flights are seven days a week.
Johannesburg, second frequency – starts August 11
Departs JNB at 11h55 and arrives in DXB at 00h55 the following day.
Departs DXB at 04h05 and arrives in JNB at 10h15.

These flights are on Wednesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays.

SOUTH AFRICA / UNITED ARAB EMIRATES: UAE lifts ban on South African transits (Travel update, 4 August 21)

The United Arab Emirates will tomorrow (August 5) lift a ban on fully vaccinated transits from South Africa, Nigeria, Uganda, Vietnam, India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Afghanistan, Indonesia, Bangladesh, and Nepal.

Passengers travelling from these countries will be able to transit through UAE airports if they present a negative PCR test taken no more than 72 hours before departure.

UAE departure airports will arrange separate lounges for transiting passengers, according to Reuters.

Travel Information - COSTA RICA: Costa Rica allows uninsured vaxxed tourists, minors

Beginning August 1, Costa Rica will allow tourists fully vaccinated against COVID-19 and minors to enter the country without travel insurance. This aims to increase tourist visitation and will take effect one year after the reopening of the country’s air border, according to Travel Agent Central.

The accepted vaccines will be: Moderna, Pfizer-BioNTech, Oxford/AstraZeneca and Johnson & Johnson. The last dose of the vaccine must have been applied at least 14 days prior to arrival in Costa Rica. As proof, vaccination certificates and vaccination cards that contain at least the following information will be accepted.

In the case of US travellers, COVID-19 Vaccination Record Cards will be accepted.

Travel Info - 16 July 21 - MAURITIUS: Mauritius gears up for October full opening

Agents and operators globally are opening sales for Mauritius from October onwards in line with the island’s announcement that Phase Two of its reopening, which takes place on October 1, will allow vaccinated travellers to enter Mauritius, and move freely on the island.

From yesterday (July 15) until September 30, Phase 1 allows vaccinated international visitors to enter the island and enjoy a 14-day ‘resort bubble’ vacation, in which they may enjoy the facilities of the resort but not leave the resort. A negative PCR test result is required before boarding on the outward journey.

Tourism Update approached Chief Finance and Admin Officer for Air Mauritius South Africa, Nooriena Davids, who said Air Mauritius inventory between South Africa and Mauritius was reflecting in the GDS from October onwards. However, Davids was also cautious about this date saying that the reopening of borders to travellers originating from South Africa would be dependent on local infection rates at the time and the progress of South Africa’s vaccination programme.

Travel Information Update - ZIMBABWE
Travellers wanting to get vaccinated can now travel to Zimbabwe for a quick vaxcation, following approval for Healthpoint Hospital in Harare to privately vaccinate foreign tourists.

The hospital is offering vaccinations to foreigners for just USD100 (R1 375) for both doses of a two-dose vaccination, and is currently in discussions with Zimbabwean government officials about the possibility of launching a similar programme in Victoria Falls, which would be administered by Healthpoint’s partner, Ace Ambulances.

Zimbabwe pulled well ahead of South Africa some time ago with regard to COVID vaccinations, having commenced the roll-out of its programme in February. The country has already made extensive inroads into populations in tourism hotspots, such as Victoria Falls. It’s now driving ahead with its aim to achieve herd immunity across the country.

Owner of Healthpoint Hospital, Peter Annesley, told Travel News that, as Zimbabwe was well on its way to achieving herd immunity for its residents, the government had now been able to turn its attention to approving programmes that allowed tourists to be vaccinated within Zimbabwe, which would be key to unlocking the recovery of Zimbabwe’s tourism industry.

He explained that Zimbabwe’s quick access to vaccines had been achieved through a private-public collaboration between Zimbabwean government officials, the Chinese Ambassador in Zimbabwe and a few high-profile Chinese investors, and this had enabled Zimbabwe to secure a substantial number of COVID-19 vaccination doses. With help from the same influential Chinese investors’ engagements with government, Healthpoint had been selected as the first health care facility in Zimbabwe with authority to administer COVID vaccinations privately and had subsequently secured a substantial number of vaccine doses, allowing their private vaccination programme to commence in Harare about eight weeks ago, overseen by a Ministry of Health official.

“The government is mindful that Zimbabwean residents should be charged a minimal amount to get vaccinated, so we charge Zimbabwean residents USD40 (R548) in total for a two-dose vaccination, while foreigners are charged USD100 (R1 375) for their two-dose vaccine. This works out to only USD50 (R684) per dose,” said Peter.

He added that travellers were already pouring into Harare from all parts of South Africa to be vaccinated, and Zimbabwe welcomed travellers to come to Harare for this purpose, saying that while there was no need to book for vaccines it was advisable to contact Healthpoint Hospital (www.healthpoint.africa) ahead of arranging flights to ensure that they had sufficient stock for the intended first and second vaccination dates.

“Zimbabwe has thrown its weight behind the Chinese, Russian and Indian vaccines, which are all two-dose vaccines that can be taken two weeks apart. This means that travellers can either plan a two-week holiday around Zimbabwe or fly into Harare for a morning and then return two weeks later. We are seeing a lot of uptake for the latter arrangement,” says Peter.

Responding to queries about the efficacy of these vaccines and whether travellers would be allowed access to Western countries on the basis of having been vaccinated with these particular brands, Peter explained that the bulk of the stock available in Zimbabwe comprised the Chinese-made Sinopharm and Sinovac vaccines.

“Both of these vaccines have recently been approved by WHO and have been proven just as safe as Western vaccine options.” He added that travel advisories would soon be updated to take WHO’s approval of these vaccines into account.

Travel Information Updates: 22 June 21 - Namibia

Namibia has introduced stricter COVID-19 regulations in the wake of increasing new infections, hospitalisations and deaths recorded over the past few weeks.

Namibian President, Hage Geingob, noted earlier this week that the country, with a population of 2.5 million people, had surpassed the 1 000 mark of deaths attributable to COVID-19 infections.

The country has the second highest average number of new cases per million population per day, after the Seychelles, according to the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC).

Amended regulations include:

International passenger flights are operating at Windhoek's Hosea Kutako International Airport (WDH).
All non-Namibian travellers must present a PCR test taken no more than seven days before arrival.
All travellers coming from pre-determined hotspots, such as India, are required to take a second PCR test after seven days in the country.
Travellers who arrive without a test result or with a result outside the outlined period will be subject to a seven-day quarantine and a test at personal expense.
Frequent travellers returning to Namibia within three days of departure are permitted to use the same positive COVID-19 test results upon re-entry.
Travelers who exceed the three-day period will be required to present a new COVID-19 test. Travelers who fail to do so will be required to quarantine for a period of seven days.
The Katima Mulilo, Ariamsvlei, and Noordoewer border posts, and the port of Walvis Bay are the only access points for tourists intending to travel via land or sea.
Authorities have placed the local areas of Windhoek, Okahandja, and Rehoboth under lockdown for a period of 14 days (June 16 to 30).
The nationwide 20h00 to 04h00 curfew remains in place until further notice.
The new measures are in place until June 30 but may be adjusted in the interim, depending on the circumstances.

Travel Information Updates: 22 June 21
Dubai’s easing of restrictions for passengers from South Africa who are fully vaccinated with vaccines approved by the UAE authorities will commence June 23. Emirates will start uplifting outbound passenger who qualify, from the same date.

These passengers originating in SA will need to carry a negative result from a PCR test taken within 48 hours before departure, but UAE citizens are exempt from this requirement.

On arrival at Dubai Airport, passengers will be required to undergo another PCR test.

Transiting passengers will need to comply with the entry protocols of their final destinations.

Dubai's announcement was followed by an announcement from Emirates on Sunday, June 20, that its flights from Johannesburg to Dubai may be booked from June 23, 2021 onwards, for passengers who meet these requirements.

Emirates suspended its passenger services between South Africa and Dubai on January 16, 2021, and then later reinstated daily flights between Johannesburg and Dubai, with only flights inbound to SA allowing certain passengers on board. The outbound flights were for cargo only with no passenger uplift. Now passenger uplift in SA for eligible passengers is allowed.

Botswana - TRAVEL INFO UPDATES💥💥 NEW CAMP - Mobile Photographic Safari 💥💥

Pangolin Photo Safaris is set to open a new seasonal mobile camp in a private concession within Botswana’s Okavango Delta.

Opening in July, the Pangolin Photo Camp will operate seasonally in the remote western sector of a private concession. The camp will comprise large en-suite tents, accommodating a total of eight guests.
“We are excited to be given access to such an inspiring and remote area,” said Pangolin co-owner Toby Jermyn. “Dereck and Beverly Joubert are wildlife photography legends and have done a lot of their work here, so it’s an honour for our young company to be allowed to explore this area of theirs, and to help support their conservation goals.”

The camp is semi-permanent but can move regularly making the most of sightings and animal movements in different parts of the concession. Initially six sites have been identified in strategic locations.

The Pangolin Photo Camp will be hosted by a professional wildlife photographer throughout the season (March to November) and cameras and telephoto lenses will be available for guests to use free of charge should they not have their own gear. Game activities will be conducted in two four-seater game viewing vehicles fitted with bean bag camera rests.

The communal areas of the camp will comprise a dining tent, campfire and a dedicated editing tent for post-production sessions during the day.

Pangolin will begin construction of several underground photographic hides on the concession early this year, which will be positioned and designed jointly by Dereck and Pangolin Co-owner, Gerhard ‘Guts’ Swanepoel.

travel information - Vax Passport is gaining momentum
The current groundswell of support for ‘vaccine passports’ could mean that the world is closer to these becoming the standard for international travel, as governments try to simultaneously stimulate tourism and protect their citizens from the pandemic.

Vaccine passports eliminate the need for PCR-negative test certificates (which are valid for only a specified number of hours) and quarantines conducted in-home or in hotels, or worse, in government institutions.

The World Health Organization’s vaccine certification solution, the ‘smart yellow card’ will roll out globally, but at an unspecified date.

Meanwhile, in their urgency to get their tourism industry up and running, several countries have forged ahead with their own plans. London’s The Times reports that the UK is working on a certification system that would allow UK travellers to go on holiday this coming summer, to countries that currently demand or intend demanding a vaccination certificate as a condition of entry.

Greece is one such country that is laying the groundwork for waiving quarantine rules for tourists carrying proof that they have been inoculated against coronavirus. The Greek government has called on the EU to standardise vaccination certification for travel inside the EU and include certain ‘third countries’ in the regimen. It has discussed a ‘green passport’ arrangement between Greece and Israel, in which citizens of one will be able to holiday in the other with no restrictions, tests, quarantines or isolation required. Israel, as the developer of the ‘green passport’ for its own citizens, intends to create a similar arrangement with Cyprus.

The European Commission wants a common EU-established vaccination certificate issued by member states to their citizens, and its president, Ursula Von der Leyen believes that such a certificate should be a “medical requirement”.

Meantime, some EU states already have their own machinery in motion to issue their own certificates to citizens. Iceland already has its own vaccination certificate. Denmark and Sweden intend to introduce digital vaccination passports that will allow travel abroad. “It will be the extra passport that you will be able to have on your mobile phone that documents that you have been vaccinated,” said Danish Finance Minister, Morten Boedskov. Sweden says it hopes to be issuing electronic certificates in June. Poland, too, launched a digital vaccine passport in January.

Cyprus, Estonia and Slovakia are all at some stage of developing a vaccination certification standard for visitors.

Spain, with its well-developed tourism industry, is also developing a vaccination passport. Foreign Minister Arancha Gonzalez said in a radio interview: “It will be a very important element to guarantee a safe return to mobility.”

Portugal’s Interior Minister, Eduardo Cabrita, said vaccine certification would be easier to manage than the current COVID-19 requirements.

According to a Forbes website report, a vaccine passport linking a locally issued certificate of vaccination to international certification is one cog in the wheel of US President Biden’s pandemic strategy, although the US government has not yet publicly thrown its weight behind a vaccine passport.

Australian national carrier, Qantas, is quite firm on its stance that a vaccination certificate will be a requirement to fly internationally on the airline.

The WHO’s vaccination passports incorporate block-chain technology, and it says they would be an improvement over current COVID-19 testing protocols and ‘immunity passports’ (which certify that the holder has recovered from the illness and has antigens). Immunity passports are not accepted by many governments, the South African government included.

Iata’s Travel Pass could be the solution that would give all governments confidence that they are effectively mitigating the risk of importing COVID-19. This means having accurate information on passengers’ COVID-19 health status. The Travel Pass informs passengers what tests, vaccines and other measures they require prior to travel, details on where they can get tested and it also gives them the ability to share their test results and vaccination certificates in a verifiable, safe and privacy-protecting manner.
