Our Story

3 Star, owner run Guest House in Umhlanga, Kwazulu Natal, South Africa

Situated in a quiet residential area of Umhlanga, only a short walk from the beach, this family-run guest house provides guests with an idyllic holiday getaway. With its stunning views and tranquil garden setting, Honey Pot B&B is a home away from home. Only 600 metres from the buzzing village centre, it offers 6 individually furnished guest rooms, with private entrances. Start the day with a swim in the outdoor pool or plan a romantic picnic on the beach. The bar area is the ideal spot to enjoy a refreshing drink or simply relax in style. Make use of the business facilities or the portable braai. The friendly staff is happy to arrange transfers to and from the airport for you as well as various day trips and tours.

Honey Pot Cottage was originally built in 1915 as one of the Farm Manager cottages when this area was a Mango and Avocado plantation and a dairy farm. It is possible that bee hives were kept on the farm hence the name.

The land and property were originally owned by the Oyster Box, being transferred into private ownership at a later stage.

In the 1920’s an addition was added to the cottage to house a horse or Ox wagon. This is now our dining room.

The current garage and rooms 1 and 2 we understand were originally stables.

Room 6 which abuts room 6 was originally built for Heather’s mother who had many wonderful years here in South Africa. Sadly, she passed away the same day as Nelson Mandela, and after some considerable time, it was converted into a family unit.

Rooms 3, 4, 5 were built in the 1950’s and at some time around this period the front entrance in Oyster Crescent was closed up and re-opened in Hilken Drive, hence the property having 2 addresses, 11 Hilken Drive and originally 18 Oyster Crescent.

The natural gardens have one of the original Mango trees, estimates say that this tree is over 100 years old. It still bears fruit, but the Mangoes are now small and stringy.

We also have 2 Avocado trees, also very old which still bear wonderful butter avocados, the record being 285 in 2016.

Since the current owners purchased the property in 1995, various changes and improvements have constantly been made, however we try to maintain the homely cottage type experience for our guests.

Ecologically we recycle everything, paper, tins, bottles and plastic. We also recycle any waste food matter in Bokashi bins and a wormery. This not only provides liquid nutriment for our hydroponic garden which provides us with fresh garden produce, but also generates very high-quality compost.

Water Harvesting is a priority with all rain water from the roof areas being captured in JoJo tanks, for further use.

All municipal water goes through a filtration system on our property, so all tap water is of a clean and purified nature and very safe to drink.
