Visiting Drakensberg for the 125th commemoration of the Battle of Spion Kop!
🎥 Honouring the Past, Showcasing the Future of KwaZulu-Natal Tourism
The 125th Spionkop Commemoration brought together 421 guests, including international and domestic visitors, historians, media, and key stakeholders such as the MEC's for Economic Development, Tourism & Environmental Affairs (EDTEA) and the Department of Sports, Arts & Culture. Among them, 48 soldiers who travelled from abroad will now return home as ambassadors, carrying the powerful stories of KZN’s rich history with them.
This moving tribute was not only a commemoration of the past but also an opportunity to showcase the Maloti-Drakensberg region and the immersive experiences it offers to visitors. Following the event, guests explored the battlefields of Isandlwana, Rorke’s Drift, Blood River, Ladysmith, Colenso, Churchill, Chieveley, and Spionkop, retracing the footsteps of history. Others experienced the region’s diverse tourism offerings, from the thrills of Virtual Rush to encounters with the Big 5 at Nambiti and the breathtaking views of Drakensberg Ballooning.
Some guests also took time to savour local flavours with beer tasting at Dragonview Lodge, experience thrilling adventure activities at Four Rivers Adventures, and unwind at the scenic Drakensberg Sun, soaking in the natural beauty of the mountains.
The event not only honoured the fallen but also reinforced KwaZulu-Natal’s position as a premier destination where history, heritage, and adventure meet. It showcased the province’s potential for meaningful tourism experiences and compelling storytelling for filmmakers, making it a key player in cultural and historical tourism.
