SunSquare Cape Town Gardens has opened its doors to travellers’ furry friends, becoming a ‘SunPet- friendly’ hotel in what is a first for the Southern Sun group.

SunSquare GM, Richard Keet, along with his team, are ready to welcome four-legged guests as a new addition to their arrivals this holiday season. “We understand that for many people, their pets are part of their family, so travelling without them is unthinkable. The location and facilities at SunSquare Cape Town Gardens lend themselves to welcoming pets, so the decision to convert it to a pet-friendly hotel has been quite natural and involved a simple refurbishment.”

Based on proximity to the foyer and gardens, several rooms in the hotel were selected for the pet-friendly conversion. These were renovated and fitted with hygienic vinyl flooring to provide both comfort and practicality for guests and their pets.

“SunPets are invited to join their families on the terrace for breakfast, lunch or dinner – and everything in between – at our trendy Zepi restaurant,” says Keet. Pet meals can be ordered from the SunPet Gourmet Menu, which offers a range of nutritious individually packaged dishes.

SunPet-friendly rooms are available at an additional surcharge of R250 per room per night, with a once-off R500 non-refundable payment per stay. SunPets receive a welcome treat on arrival, pet bedding, and access to a selection of bowls, mats, toys and other conveniences during their stay.

Home Affairs Minister Aaron Motsoaledi has gazetted a massive increase in application fees for South African passports as of November 1. Passports and related documents will cost 50%-100% more than previously.

Applications made before October 31 will be at the old rates.

The fee for a standard 32-page passport for adults and children will go from R400 (that fee was set in 2011) to R600, a 50% increase.

A big jump is in the price of a 48-page maxi passport used by frequent and business travellers, which will now cost R1 200, having previously cost R600.

Prices of applications at embassies or consulates outside of South Africa are also doubled: R1 200 for a standard passport for an adult or child and R2 400 for the maxi passport.

Under the new fee structure, as currently is the case, the cost of a passport replacement is double the standard issue fee, unless the original has been lost, stolen or damaged through no negligence on the part of the holder.

Also from November 1, official passports will be charged for, while those are currently issued free of charge. They will come at the same price as a standard tourist passport, R600.

Crew certificates, which previously cost R350, have also been hiked by 71,4% to R600.

Emergency travel certificates remain unchanged at R140.

Non-fully vaccinated travellers to Singapore no longer have to quarantine on arrival and the indoor mask mandate will be removed from August 29.

Visitors who are not fully vaccinated will, however, still have to test negative for COVID within two days prior to their departure for Singapore.

Currently, fully vaccinated travellers can enter the country without taking COVID-19 tests or undergoing quarantine.

Masks are still compulsory on public transport and in health-care settings like hospitals, residential care homes and ambulances. They are optional indoors, in taxis, private hires and in the airport.

Following the announcement, which was made on August 24, Singapore Airlines announced that it would drop its mask mandate on most flights when the rules come into effect on August 29.

Masks will only be necessary on flights to or from destinations where it is mandatory.

Since Italy’s retraction of the ‘Green Pass’ for all domestic activities, the Italian Ministry of Health has confirmed that the pass is also no longer required for international travellers to enter the country.

This means that arrivals do not have to show any COVID-19 documentation upon entry, be it proof of vaccination, a recovery certificate or a negative test.

Tourists and visitors to the destination now face the same entry requirements and regulations as pre-pandemic.

80,5% of the country’s population are fully vaccinated.

Indonesia has lifted its pre-departure testing mandate for arriving vaccinated travellers, due to decreased levels of COVID-19 in the country. Face masks are also no longer required in outdoor areas but remain mandatory for indoor venues and public transport.

Unvaccinated travellers, both international and domestic, are still subject to testing protocols to visit Indonesia. This means they must still quarantine for five days upon arrival and take two PCR tests, according to President Joko Widodo. Unvaccinated travellers will also be vaccinated at international travel entry points upon arrival, according to Indonesia Travel, Indonesia Tourism’s official website.

Travellers must provide evidence of a full primary vaccine course, completed at least 14 days before departure.

Travellers under the age of six are exempt from the vaccination and testing requirements, but must be accompanied by an adult traveller who has fulfilled these requirements.

International travellers must also download the PeduliLindungi mobile app before departure.

According to the Greek Ministry of Tourism, all COVID-19 entry requirements have been removed, as of May 1. Travellers arriving in Greece, regardless of their country of origin, no longer have to carry a vaccination, recovery, or negative test certificate.

An optional simplified Passenger Locator Form remains in operation. The form can be used to attain an EU Certificate of negative COVID-19 test result.

During their stay in Greece, travellers must follow the measures that apply to locals, particularly the use of face masks in all indoor areas. Children under the age of four and those with respiratory problems are exempt from the mask rule.
