Airports Company South Africa would like to update the public on the floods in KwaZulu Natal, and the contingency plans made by King Shaka International Airport to ensure flights are still able to leave and land from the airport.
As of last night, certain parts of King Shaka International Airport terminal building were impacted by heavy rains, however, repairs, and recovery processes are underway to restore the affected infrastructure.
The airportā€™s management team has activated business continuity plans to sustain airport operations and as a result, we donā€™t expect flight delays, and if any, they will be at a minimum.
Passenger and Aircraft processing is continuing as normal, without compromising safety and security protocols.
We urge all passengers and airport users to exercise extra caution when they make their way to the airport as major routes in Durban are flooded.

Great news for ski enthusiasts

Switzerland drops all COVID restrictions tonight

The government of Switzerland announced on Wednesday, February 16, that it would lift almost all pandemic-related restrictions from midnight on Thursday, February 17.

It expressed its confidence that COVID-19 infection rates had been successfully uncoupled from hospitalisations.

Health-related measures for persons entering the country have been lifted. It will no longer be necessary to provide proof of vaccination, recovery or a negative test or to complete an entry form.

Patrons of shops, theatres, concerts, restaurants, bars and other venues will no longer have to wear masks or show COVID passes. The government has said that health authorities will continue to provide COVID certificates recognised by the EU for Swiss residents who want to travel abroad.

Restrictions on the size of private gatherings have also ended, and the recommendation for employees to work from home has been lifted.

But the requirement for face mask wearing on public transport and in health-care facilities will remain in place until March 31.

Swiss President Ignazio Cassis said at a press conference in Bern: "The virus is there. We are learning how to live with the virus."

Switzerland joins a growing throng of European countries scrapping nearly all pandemic-related restrictions, including Denmark, the Netherlands, Norway and Sweden.

More than 70 percent of the Swiss population has had at least one dose of the vaccine.

People who have tested positive for SARS-CoV-2 will still be required to isolate in order to prevent them from infecting others.

Ireland ā€“ new entry regs
Today 01:40

Passengers travelling to the Republic of Ireland have a new set of travel restrictions to observe to enter the country.

Vaccine certificates from the primary vaccination series will not be accepted for travel if more than 270 days have passed since the final dose in the primary vaccine series. Vaccine certificates based on the booster or additional doses are not time limited for entry to Ireland.

The standard acceptance period of 14 days after the final dose in a primary vaccine series listed below will be required for all vaccines accepted for travel to Ireland.

Note: booster/additional doses are not subject to an acceptance period.

For the purposes of travel, passengers are considered vaccinated if they have been vaccinated with a product listed below after the recommended number of days after the final dose in the primary vaccine series, see table below.

From February 1, travellers are considered vaccinated after:

2 doses of Pfizer-BioNtech Vaccine: BNT162b2 (Comirnaty). 14 days.
2 doses of Moderna Vaccine: CX-024414 (Moderna). 14 days.
2 doses of Oxford-AstraZeneca Vaccine: ChAdOx1-SARS-COV-2 (Vaxzevria or Covishield). 14 days.
1 dose of Johnson & Johnson/Janssen Vaccine: Ad26.COV2-S [recombinant] (Janssen). 14 days.
2 doses of Coronavac (Sinovac). 14 days.
2 doses of Sinopharm BIBP. 14 days.
2 doses of Covaxin. 14 days.
2 doses of Novavax (Nuvaxovid). 14 days.
A heterologous (mixed) dose of any of the above vaccines. 14 days.
A single dose of any of the above vaccines administered within 180 days of a positive RT-PCR test result. The traveller must hold proof of the positive test and the vaccine dose. 14 days.

The standard acceptance period of 14 days after the final dose in a primary vaccine series will be required for all vaccines accepted for travel to Ireland.

Passengers to Ireland with an accepted proof of vaccination, or proof of recovery from COVID-19 in the prior six months do not have to show an additional pre-departure COVID-19 test result.

Passengers without proof of vaccination, or proof of recovery from COVID-19 in the prior six months, must show evidence of a negative PCR test result taken within the 72 hours prior to arriving in Ireland. Only PCR test results are accepted for passengers to Ireland.

In situations where a person is unable to present evidence of a negative PCR test prior to travel, due to a continuing, persistent, positive result after infection, then a positive PCR result from a test taken 11 or more days prior to the date of arrival in Ireland, and no more than 180 days prior to the date of arrival, will be accepted.

It is an offence to travel to Ireland from overseas without a pre-departure test result unless exempt ā€“ a passenger who travels without a test result or an exemption is required to take a PCR test within 36 hours following arrival.

Before travel all passengers will need to have filled in a Passenger Locator Form (PLF).

I like to wait to board a plane so the person sitting next to me think they have extra space. Only for me to walk in right before they close the doors and I end up ruining their life. Who else have a travel peeve. Please share

South Africaā€™s response to travel restrictions imposed by several countries

The South African government has noted the announcements by several countries to institute temporary travel restrictions on South Africa and other countries in our region.

This follows the detection of the new Omicron variant.

South Africa aligns itself with the World Health Organisationā€™s position on the latest travel bans.
The World Health Organisation has pleaded with world leaders not to engage in knee-jerk reactions and has cautioned against the imposition of travel restrictions.

Dr. Michael Ryan (WHO Head of Emergencies) has stressed the importance of waiting to see what the data will show.
ā€œWeā€™ve seen in the past, the minute thereā€™s any kind of mention of any kind of variation and everyone is closing borders and restricting travel. Itā€™s really important that we remain open, and stay focused,ā€ Ryan said.

We also note that new variants have been detected in other countries. Each of those cases have had no recent links with Southern Africa. Itā€™s worth noting that the reaction to those countries is starkly different to cases in Southern Africa.

This latest round of travel bans is akin to punishing South Africa for its advanced genomic sequencing and the ability to detect new variants quicker. Excellent science should be applauded and not punished. The global community needs collaboration and partnerships in the management of the COVID-19 pandemic.

A combination of South Africaā€™s capacity to test and itā€™s ramped-up vaccination programme, backed up by world class scientific community, should give our global partners the comfort that we are doing as well as they are in managing the pandemic. South Africa follows and enforces globally recognized COVID-19 health protocols on travel. No infected individuals are permitted to leave the country.

Minister Naledi Pandor said: "Whilst we respect the right of all countries to take the necessary precautionary measures to protect their citizens, we need to remember that this pandemic requires collaboration and sharing of expertise. Our immediate concern is the damage that these restrictions are causing to families, the travel and tourism industries and businessā€.

South Africa has already started engaging countries that have imposed travel bans with the view to persuade them to reconsider.
