At Offroad Routes and Tours, we do guided self-drive trips to interesting places in Southern Africa that have remained preserved as close to the original natural beauty. A 4-wheel drive vehicle rigged for camping is essential to reach some of the most beautiful spots. We travel for the pure joy of it and few things beat the sense of freedom when exploring places where only some have dared to ventu

re. Wild camping is part and parcel of how we travel, but for variety, we might stay in a guest house now and then.

Just back from a 3-night stay at Eselfontein Gasteplaas near Fraserburg—and what a gem!

This is farm stay at its best.

We stayed in the charming farmhouse with its three comfy rooms, and there's also the option to camp right there. Pieter is the best host ever—his warm, genuine Karoo hospitality made us feel right at home.

Highly recommended for anyone looking to experience the real Karoo.

We’ve just wrapped up a 5-day scouting trip for our Karoo tour planned for next April, and we’re absolutely blown away.

The vast, rugged beauty of the Karoo and the warm hospitality of its people left a deep impression. This is a landscape that reveals its soul slowly—meant to be explored at a gentle pace.

Tchando Bush Camp, nestled deep in a stunning canyon along the Rus and Vrede 4x4 Trail, was a highlight of our recent Trans Kouga Wilderness Tour.

This recently established camp offers a truly special setting—think sheer cliffs, a grassy, level area perfect for camping, and a well-equipped braai spot tucked under a rock overhang. With a flush toilet, donkey-heated shower, and enough space for six 4x4 vehicles, it’s a hidden gem that’s only accessible with a proper off-road vehicle.

A night here feels like real wilderness luxury.

Oukloof Pass, between Beaufort West and Fraserburg, winds through a remote and rugged part of the Karoo, where dry riverbeds and dramatic mountain formations define the landscape.

It’s a gravel route that offers wide-open views and the stillness that only the semi-desert can provide.

Along the way, we stopped for a coffee break in one of the dry riverbeds—a quiet moment surrounded by stone and silence, a reminder of the raw, untouched beauty of this part of the world.
