Aerial photo of the Biko Bridge under construction in the early 1970s.

According to historian William Martinson, writing for Artefacts, a high strength, two-pack, imported epoxy adhesive was applied between the matching precast concrete bridge segments to ensure a durable seal and structural continuity.

The seven-strand stressing cables were inserted through ducts in the precast bridge segments and were then post tensioned. The cable ducts were grouted up after post tensioning was complete.

Final cost of the bridge was reported as R4.4-million.

Press Release: World Waveski Surfing Titles to Bring Global Spotlight to Buffalo City

East London, 18th June 2024 – Buffalo City is poised to welcome the world to its shores as the final plans come together for the highly anticipated 2024 World Waveski Surfing Titles presented by Buffalo City Tourism. This international showdown will see over 100 elite athletes from around the globe converging on East London to compete at the renowned Nahoon Reef, bringing with them an economic boost exceeding R5 million to the local economy.

In a significant show of community and business support, national and local partners have joined forces to ensure the event is nothing short of spectacular. The preparation for the World Waveski Surfing Titles has seen extensive collaboration with Buffalo City Metro Municipality, SAPS, Law Enforcement, Buffalo City Traffic Department, Buffalo City Waste Management, Buffalo City Beaches, Buffalo City Fire Department and Dive Unit, NSRI, Red Alert Security Solutions, and Red Alert Emergency Medical Services. Key stakeholders convened at Reef Café on 18th June 2024 to finalize the meticulous plans set to roll out next week.

Event Coordinator Trystan Viaene expressed excitement about the collaboration, stating, "The support from local businesses has been incredible. Working with so many different stakeholders, to bring to life one event has been a fabulous journey to ensure harmony is in place amongst all service providers. It has been wonderful watching our partners team up and work together to ensure this international event is truly world-class."

Nahoon Reef will transform into the epicenter of this prestigious competition, with its small parking lot being repurposed into a vibrant contest village. Consequently, the public will be unable to park at Nahoon Reef Parking Lot from 27th June until 7th July 2024. To accommodate this, the Buffalo City Metro Traffic Department has arranged for half of the parking lot to be blocked off for event structures starting Monday, 24th June, with the entire lot closing from 27th June.

Reef Café Parking Lot will serve as the primary parking area, though spaces are limited. Overflow parking at Nahoon Corner will be managed with a road-block to prevent congestion. Additionally, SAPS will monitor the main entrance to the Nahoon Point Nature Reserve throughout the event, ensuring the highest standards of safety and security for attendees and participants alike.

It is imperative that the public adheres to event regulations, which include a strict no-entry policy for non-competitors at the Nahoon Reef break during competition times. The contest runs from 29th June to 7th July 2024, and for those unable to attend in person, live streaming will be available at www.sawaveski.co.za, allowing supporters worldwide to join in the excitement from their homes.

Buffalo City residents and visitors are invited to engage with the event through several key activities. The Meet & Greet at Vincent Park Shopping Centre on Thursday, 27th June at 15h00 offers a chance to interact with world-class athletes. Following this, the Flag Parade on Friday, 28th June will commence from Beach Break Cafe at 15h30, showcasing the vibrant representation of country flags and adding to the festive atmosphere.

This event promises to be a remarkable showcase of athleticism and community spirit. We encourage everyone to come out and support the 2024 World Waveski Surfing Titles presented by Buffalo City Tourism, marking another proud moment for our city on the international stage.

Event Co-Ordinator Trystan Viaene says: "The support from local businesses has been incredible. Working with so many different stakeholders, to bring to life one event has been a fabulous journey to ensure harmony is in place amongst all service providers. It has been wonderful watching service providers team up and work together to ensure this international event is truly world-class.

Greater double-collared sunbird, photographed by Jannes van Vuuren.

Usually seen in pairs, double-collard sunbirds grow to about 14cm in length with a long, decurved beak. Males are distinguished from females by the latter's smaller size, narrower red chest band and shorter bill.

Sunbirds breed all year round, with a peak from July to November. They live on nectar from flowers but will also feed on fruit, inspects and spiders.
